I am certain that the way a Montante is used is one of the ways a dane axe woud be used during the late viking age. And the way he is defending the bridge in this video is what I imagine the berserker during the battle of Stamford Bridge would hold back the anglo saxon army for the king Harald Hardrådes army to assemble.

I did some montante vs sword and buckler sparring today. I used s&b. My opponents main issue was using sufficient power as they were being gracious. As is often the case with significant range mismatches, it became a game of range control, binding and rushing. Hopefully once my opponent gains familiarity and confidence, we can get a recording worth sharing.

You can’t do it with steel. That spadone can bend masks and the head beneath if kept at the pace needed to clear the space around. You need soft simulators, padded stuff ecc

No weapon can be used to its most realistic, fullest extent in HEMA as all strikes must be pulled to some extent to try to prevent injury depending on the safety gear worn. I have sparred full speed with montante, as has another youtuber, Dequitum. I have a second dedicated HEMA channel. I'll be uploading sparring with a steel montante as Im getting tired of people perpetuating this belief that you can not spar with a blunted steel greatsword that is meant for sparring. However, I do say in my comment to pull your strikes even with steel armor. To say that would make it historically inaccurate is something I agree with to an extent, but it's still worth exploring. Provided you have competent and experienced HEMA practitioners using the montante and experienced HEMA practitioners going up against it, understanding the limitations that have to be set forth, and respecting the weapon as though it were live. Results will not be as conclusive as if we were using a live one, I agree. But that's the same with any weapon in HEMA. It isn't so useless to the point that we should just give up and deem it too dangerous, or it'd be so inaccurate we shouldn't even bother. This is just my thoughts on this. Other people dont feel safe doing so or think its a waste of time that is their prerogative, and I'll disagree with it and continue to present the points Ive found in my own testing.

I do agree with your point, however that pulling your strikes with the weapon can result in the conclusions of the exercise being skewed or not as realistic as they could be as a weapon meant for training interacts differently than a live one. To properly conduct an experiment such as this you would need competent and experienced HEMA practitioners to efficiently pull strikes, but for the attackers to also give respect to the weapon as though it were live. Due to the very nature of being unable to do with this with a live weapon and have committed attackers, it will always have conclusions that are not accurate to historical recreation. I go a step further to say that a good majority of HEMA techniques (Certainly not all) are not quite accurate to historical recreation as a sharp weapon interacts differently with another sharp vs how blunts interact or even synthetics or padded weapons. I do not believe, however, that just because something will not be "accurate historical recreation" does not mean it has to be discarded. HEMA is a martial art, and like any martial art, things should be explored and pressure tested in a safe and controlled manner. Bottom line, all strikes in HEMA need to be pulled period regardless of the weapon and protection used. Apologies if this comment seems like its disjointed. These types of swords were also often used as bodyguard weapons so the demonstration for enemies surrounding the wielder from both sides are on point too.

This is a montante, they were smaller than the famous landsknecht doppelhanders (now more widely known as zweihanders) so I'm guessing around 68-70 inches or 175cm.
