I read somewhere that there was a platoon of Filipino brigaders (around 50, but in separate units) that fought in defence of the Republic. The Spanish released the Philippines in 1898, so to those brigaders, defending the legally elected Second Spanish Republic was probably like repaying a debt to the Spanish people. There was also a company (around 80 Filipinos) that fought for the Nationalists. Even now, the left/right divide in the Philippines is very obvious. Big-name corporations and establishments often don't like leftists and vise-versa. Even clans are broken apart because of political ideologies.
