Ibn Hazm رحمه الله (or his school) also believed that you could see a girl fully naked before marriage and that if you didn't lie down to rest between the superogatory units of the dawn prayer and the obligatory units of the dawn prayer then your dawn prayer is null and void. So his literalism was a bit crazy.

I understand what you're saying, but ibn Hazm wasn't coming to juristic conclusions through any kind of women's lib or progressive framework. He had a juristic methodology, which denied (in theory) the legitimacy of analogical deduction in law, and simply applied it. And it makes sense when you think about why that would lead to juristic conclusions that can appear more "liberal", because when you deny the jurist the ability to extend the law in scenarios they see as analogous to others where the law is applied, then you won't have a juristic ruling on many matters that most other schools of thought will.

I think 'textualist' is a better label for the Zahiris. Ibn Arabi was also a Zahiri yet no one considers him a "literalist." No true Muslim scholar is a "literalist." This term holds no value in religious interpretation.

Saying that Ibn Hazam allowed music, is not completely true. In fact, Ibn hazam could not verify the authenticity of a Hadith, to which the scholars refer to forbid music. Nevertheless, he literally stated that if later we can verify the authenticity of this Hadith, then I withdraw my statement. The Hadith was later verified to be authentic.

The Zahiri’s have been given the translation “literalist” but this is not a correct interpretation and leads to a misunderstanding. Zahir means “apparent.” So his school was essentially saying that if the literal meaning of the Qur’an is more apparent then to go with that, and if the metaphorical meaning is more apparent then to go with that rather than doing analogies (Qiyās). The translation to “literalist” gives the Zahiris a bad and incorrect impression of being literalists by only taking literal meanings and not accepting metaphorical meanings.
