Many many years ago when I began my spiritual path on my own, I kept meditating on la illah ha il Allah, doing deeper and deeper into it. It was like layers of veils were being peeled off of my mind, and every time that would happen, a deeper meaning of this Divine Statement would come to mind, and I would likewise dive into that. It kept occurring until the meaning came to me that there is no reality except God. And in that moment, I felt real.

I am Persian. I'm living now in the UK but I know many Sufis in Iran. This video was amazing and it's just incredible how accurate and beautiful you explained Wahdat al-Wujud! Thank you so much for this. Such videos make man drunker than any wine! When we define something, we distinguish it from other things by showing its attributes. But the concept of "Nothingness" cannot be described with a certain number of characteristics, otherwise, "Nothingness" would become "something", and therefore, it would be not "Nothingness" anymore and it would be limited to those characteristics of a thing. Therefore, when Nothingness cannot be defined, it means that it cannot be distinguished. Therefore, "Nothingness" must have all the characteristics and attributes at the same time and consequently, Nothingness is in fact Everything! and it means Nothingness is the very Being and has infinite attributes. and when we say God is infinite, then, God seems like "Nothingness" for the mind while it is also everything at the same time but it is not a certain limited thing because it is infinity! I want to add a Persian poem from Maulana Jalaluddin Muhammad, known as Mowlavi in Iran, who is the Persian poet known as Rumi: مرد و زن چون یک شود آن یک تویی ** چون که یک جا محو شد آنک تویی‌‌ این من و ما بهر آن بر ساختی ** تا تو با خود نرد خدمت باختی‌‌ تا من و توها همه یک جان شوند ** عاقبت مستغرق جانان شوند مثنوی ۱ از ۱۷۸۶ تا ۱۷۸۸ When man and woman become one, Thou art that One; when the units are wiped out, lo, Thou art that (Unity). Thou didst contrive this “I” and “we” in order that Thou mightst play the game of worship with Thyself, That all “I's” and “thou's” should become one soul and at last should be submerged in the Beloved. Masnavi 1 (1786 - 1788)

One of the best explanations for an often misunderstood concept: "The Akbarian Wahdat al-Wujud (Oneness of Being) transcends duality without denying it: Haqq is Haqq and khalq is khalq. To use numerical symbolism... the number 1,000 gets all its reality from the number 1, without which it is nothing. Even so, one cannot write 1 = 1,000 or 1,000 = 1, which would be to deny the unity of the one or the multiplicity of the multiple. The notion of theophany comes clear in its crucial sense: the three zeroes of the number 1,000 (the word 'sifr,' which designates zero means, precisely, 'nothing,’ ‘emptiness’) in themselves are nonexistent. But preceded by the number 1, they express the series of epiphanies by means of which this principial 1 manifests to itself and by which each is unique: an instantaneous lightning flash of a Name which is not God, but which is not, either, other than God." - Michel Chodkiewicz

And the infinity is designed to never go backwards in relation to time. As a present tense, it is like a one way street..participating... .while doing a two way street, stop or delayed or even thinking it as future. In reality, it is actually moving as a one way street only. This intelligent concept can only be designed by someone who is universally intelligent, so man cannont be god as man has limitations in intelligence

100% proof of Wahdat Al Wujud from the Sunnah* The Muwatta of Imam Malik (100% Authentic to all Sunnis) related that Muhammad SAWS said "Beware that you do not curse time, for Allah is time" (Kitaab Al Kalaam 3rd Hadith). Imam Nawawi explained that Arabs used to curse time when calamities befell them. Muhammad SAWS was saying that Allah is the One who unveils the path of time and all calamities and goodness and time itself is from Him. Since all creatures are from Allah and His will is behind all things "Allah is time" is as true as "Allah is all things". Therefore Wahdat Al Wujud is not a fringe thing but came from the mouth of the Prophet AS himself according to the Salaf and the most authentic books of the Sunnah.

@البتّار الازدي No the Sahaba never discussed Aqeeda and go read what Sa'id ibn Al Mussayab used to say about how good character is better than salat and how Umar RA and the other Sahbi argued about how that Surah came down.. These religious leaders (pir, Sufi shia,Jewish rabbis, christians saints, Hindu pandits Buddhists monks, pope, priests, piir,) invent religious regulations and rituals involving them into different sorts of deviations in order to destroy the unity of mankind and by obstructing the way of every righteous mission with the obstacles of learned doubts and pious suspicions. They tempt people to buy their salvations and fortunes in life from them and make deaths and marriages dependent on the payment of due price to these monopolists of Paradise. And they make divisions. (within Islam also for example today shia, Sufi, dewbondi berelvi (Rizvi) tableeghi Jamaat etc. Have gone astray. Each sects are rejoicing with what the new things they have invented in the name of Islam) These religious leaders (Jewish rabbis and Christian monks as well as other pagan leaders, pandit/pir/pop) are guilty of two sins. First, they devour the wealth of the common people by selling false decrees, and by taking bribes, gifts and presents on different pretexts. They invent religious regulations and rituals as tempt people to buy their salvations and fortunes in life from them and make deaths and marriages dependent on the payment of due price to these monopolists of Paradise.

However, at same time it also say's from the point of view of tashbih, it affirms that all things are wujūd's self-disclosure (tajalli) or self-manifestation (ẓohur). In sum, all things are "He/not He" (howa/lāhowa), which is to say that they are both God and not God. doesn't this lead to pantheism? Watched the first half of the video, thinking all the while, "so, basically Advaita Vedanta?" Pleasantly surprised that the final half illuminated a primary difference, namely that of the universe being merely a reflection of Gods attributes, and this being both God and not God, as opposed to Vedanta's belief that the universe is entirely illusory. The Sufi concept seems to me to be more logical, more beautiful, more believable.
@danwalden4116
@danwalden4116 3 жыл бұрын
Vedanta doesn't claim the world is illusory. It is of the opinion that all phenomena viewed by our senses has an illusory side, since it is unable to grasp the Absolute due to it's natural disposition of assuming that what is tangible is truly real. It is a delusion more than an illusion.

@thatman3107

this is basically Advaita though. The misconception lies in being stuck on the first step, that none of this is real. It is meant to take the mind away from distractions and focus on Being itself (God). But then the affirmations are stated, that all these are nothing but the manifestations of God. In fact, that is such a primary idea in Hinduism, that we can accept millions of names and forms of God, worship trees and rocks, knowing all to be One.

Very impressed with your explanation, thank you for this video. It is indeed good to see someone talk of the real Islam, the Islam that the Prophet (Sal) and the great Saints taught. Today this type of teachings are covered by Wahhabism. Wahhabism does not accept spirituality, neither follow any tradition of the Prophet (Sal), instead divert people from the real teachings of Islam. The real teachings of Islam today can only be found in Sufism and through these teachings one can reach closeness to his/her Lord to the state of saying 'be' and it is, also internal eye can open to see what others cannot see, past present and future. There is no limit to what your Lord can give you when you get close to Him, hence we pray to be among the favoured ones, and favoured are those who become the Saints.

@Knowledge Explosion The problem with these statements is that you're actually making these actions the end goal, which means, you stop at them not daring to go beyond them. These are all doors, and if you pass through them, then you attain true spiritual knowledge. All of the spiritual philosophies, including wahdat al-wujud, are man's attempt at explaining the Divine Reality and the nature of existence that you see when you go through these doors. That is what it means to worship God. The Qur'an instructs us to meditate, to go inside ourselves, to witness, to experience. If your idea of spirituality stops at merely listening to it and saying "this is good enough", without trying to go deeper, then you're not actually listening to the Qur'an or following Islam. Islam is a door, not a god to be worshipped.

@Knowledge Explosion What are you talking about worshipping creation? Are you sure that it's not you who is actually worshipping creation?
@shadowkill546
@shadowkill546 4 жыл бұрын
@Knowledge Explosion It's not going beyond what the Prophet taught, it is actually following what he said. The Prophet meditated before he attained the station of prophethood, the form of meditation was called tahannuth. And afterwards, he taught various forms of meditation, including muraqabah. The problem is that the way that Muslims today practice Islam, due to the influence of wahabi ideology from Saudi Arabia, is not in line with the way of the Prophet. Do not think that just because something is outside of your experience or understanding that it must be wrong. That is the ego. Rather, one should explore it further to investigate.
@shadowkill546
@shadowkill546 4 жыл бұрын
@Knowledge Explosion I'm not saying you are, I'm implying that you investigate yourself more deeply. The ego is very tricky. There are many Muslims who think they are authentic Muslims, taking the most narrow way, being judgmental of any differences in explanation or philosophy, but it has less to do with wisdom and religiosity as it does with feeling insecure and trying to gratify the ego.

Ok you have reached spiritual enlightenment. Now what? What do you do next? Ehat do you do with it? Do you become this stoic being that is completely passive, though enlightened? So you live in spiritual valhalla . Now what. There is a major difference between emagining a state, especially Future state, and living out that state, they are completely different. One is a moving picture in the mind, the other is a complete living it. Secondly, life always strives towards a future end. Once you " arrive" what purpose is there for life? This is why to sustain life, one must always allow for mystery in life, something to strive for or to marvel at. And Christianity answers this need in eternal life.

This is my favourite part of Sufism. Especially, the infinite manifestations of god through "A'yan al-thabita" sounds a lot like the multiverse hypothesis in theoretical physics in which we have infinite worlds being created with different or similar laws of physics (either the many world interpretation of quantum mechanics or the multiverse of the eternal inflation theory). I always found the concept of "A'yan althabita" very similar to laws of physics. I absolutely loved the fact that you very correctly used images of the galaxies and the universe while you were talking about these very complex concepts. One small comment about Macrocosm and Microcosm. As much as I have read in Arabic and Persian texts, they are not translations of "Insan al-kabir" (Great man) and "Insan al-saghir" (small man). They are translations of "the great cosmos/world" (Aalam al-kabir) and "the small cosmos/world" (Aalam al-saghir). And the idea behind it is that the human being is the small world which means that the human being includes all attributes of the world within itself. This idea which surely had existed way before Sufism and even Islam, can again be interpreted via a scientific perspective. It means that all the laws of physics that are valid out there in the world (for particles, planets and galaxies), they are all also valid inside us humans. We are not fundamentally different to the world.

Great to see a video on a difficult topic of wahdat-al-wajud. To understand this concept one needs to go through functional qulb (spiritual parallel of heart) concept that sufis generally practice and claim that the whole of the universe may not encompass God but He may reside in the instigated qulb of His slaves who selflessly worship Him regardless of any temptation of heaven or fear of hell and seek merely love of God only.

What a wonderful, deep appreciation of Sufism. Listening to your enlightening narration a thought kept recurring to me…. Yes, it is worth noting: Nothing combats ignorance, and its offspring, racism, like knowledge of the hitherto unknown. Imagine if, in a course on comparative wisdom traditions, high school students were exposed, at their level, to this remarkable appreciation of this branch of Islam. What we’re bombarded with on the Consumer News, with the express purpose of dehumanizing the owners of the resources we covet, are blanket stereotypes, mostly visual parodies of caricatures, that serve to “other” the Islamic world. This enlightening video reinstates, in those of us so unfortunately brainwashed, the dignity which is rightfully owned by those we seek to denigrate And ALL OF HUMANITY stands to gain Wahdat al Wujud

One thing you missed out I think is that, this idea is derived from the idea of "That Tvam Asi" or "That art you", which is a Hindu trantric phrase, as mentioned in the Chandokya Upanishad. This idea is so welcoming and one of unity. There are similar ideas in other Indian spiritual ideologies. Therefore, many Islamic scholars declare this idea as heretic and blasphemous and often decried the whole cause of Sufism thus.

Yes, the words have to completely forgotten in the actual experience, when you are deep in wajd, right? Because these words are also in a very real way the instrument of our thoughts, and when you are IN Allah you can’t THINK about Allah. To be annihilated in Allah your words are also annihilated, even the names of Allah, even while they are forming on your body’s lips your mind and soul are totally ignorant of them in that moment; they melt away because they are unnecessary. Even in this comment, the words I have to use are kind of a vulgar thing, even though they are necessary for us as social beings. I’m just doing my best to communicate imperfectly what I have experienced, briefly, in dhikr.

I really appreciate that you are making this material digestible for the current generation of youth. The struggle between Aristotelian and Platonic metaphysical frameworks seems to be at the core of many western religious conflicts throughout history. From what I've read, it really came down to differing distribution patterns of the two philosophers' works across Europe and Asia Minor, but the result seems to have been that Platonic monism became far more popular among philosophers in the Islamic world whereas Aristotelian ideas became more deeply embedded into the Christian context. I think the reason that doctrines like Wahdat Al-Wujud were so controversial was the fact that monists, due to the width of their worldview, are rather difficult to control or govern. Dualistic doctrines tend to make social engineering a lot easier because they allow for us/them mentalities to be cultivated and exploited. I would be interested to see counterexamples to this, but I can't envision a monist philosophical framework that would compel one to participate in state-sponsored violence.

My heart suspects that Allah’s fullness is not just all of existence (which is already ineffable for us) but that all of the cosmos - the infinite time and space, energy and matter, and the logic of reality which rules these things - is a single instant of Allah, a single moment as if frozen in time. Within that infinitely small moment, for Allah, is the birth of our universe until the inevitable heat death and end of entropy. Our experience of Allah’s love and wisdom, the logic of Allah’s love and wisdom which is seen in nature, through science and philosophy, is possible because of Allah’s focused attention to His present moment. Allah lives in a state of constant present-awareness. When we have true faith in Allah, when we have true acceptance of Allah, an aspect of that is Taqwa, a special sensitivity and focus and acceptance put to the present moment, and I think that is how we experience the annhilation in Allah, the true death of our ego within Allah. The death of our ego in Allah also must be a death of our consciousness of past and future, which for spiritual purposes are both illusions. Because our present moment is a microcosm of our entire lifespan, and it in fact is all that exists for us, this taqwa awareness is aligned with Allah’s taqwa with which He sustains his love within all of existence, which is in itself a microcosm of Allah.

The "trinity" of love, beloved and lover is actually quite similar to the actual Trinity, while Jesus being the lover of the Father while the Spirit is love itself. I deeply believe that we ought to be like Jesus in this matter and that's how we become divinized, one with God. Ibn Arabi presents these thoughts wonderfully

Thank you for such a lucid explanation with lots of valuable references. God bless your work - making "wine" for the soul accessible without diluting it.

Ibn Arabi is extremely interesting to me, though I have to be very careful when considering his views. Your video, as usual, is quite excellent.

Im Muslim and readimg scriptures pf every religiom, i can see that in terms of scripture theres much more mystic basis in buddhist and hindu texts. I would say that the notion you mentioned in the beginning has somw truths to it too

I'm an American revert, and I can't tell you how much this series would have meant to me when I started my journey with Islam 10 years ago, when I was I so very thirsty for this. But late is better than never, and now is perfect as ever. Thank you so so very much!!!🙏🫶🙏

Wow this is very consistent with the teachings in Sikhism too, we say that god is everything, he’s immanent in the universe whilst also being transcendent. We are capable of being reflections of God through achieving enlightenment and recognising him and his oneness. A Sikh poet by the name Bhai Nand Lal actually talks of Mansoor al hallaj, it’s recognised that the truth has always been here, before the Gurus certain people had found the truth. It’s interesting the hadiths you spoke of also further support the idea and go hand in hand with concepts in sikhi. A beautiful explanation, thank you for this video.
