I know this comment is 3 years ago but it’s not shyness. It’s silliness. There is no one else in the world she has spent more time with, other than her kids, so what you are seeing what it looks like when you’re with a safe person and you are able to relax. And remember, she is younger than him. She worked on the original show from age 24-33. She literally grew up with him-they grew up together. It’s like working a 9-5 and buying a house and all the adult things, then coming home for Christmas and goofing around with your siblings just like you did as kids.

I think the feelings between them are very profound and defy the laws of reason. They probably love each other more than the people they've actually been married to. I've tried to think of what it is about these two that make them so special together. We are about the same age yet I was totally enamored of them in their beginning and with age and experience, even more so. Love changes and grows. Someone commented here that it goes beyond love and friendship. Then the word hit me that makes me understand better that what they portray for me goes to Spiritual. You are so entwined with one another that it starts within your very Spirit, far beyond the stages of love and sometimes it's loss, this Spiritual love just grows and embraces them more tightly but tenderly together such that even at death that Spirit based love does not end.

Something I wrote inspired by these two. I think it's accurate. I once saw a great romance depicted. This was an unusual story, not initially introduced as an affair by any means. And yet, as the relationship between the couple grew and unfolded, over a very long period of time, respect… consideration…trust…and even love developed. Love on many levels. Yes, there was attraction; but this aspect was not augmented in their story, almost avoided, because it wasn’t necessary to spell this truth out to the audience…for it was clear. And the deep, mutual love between the pair went without that absolutely deciding, altering dynamic of sexual or sensual fulfillment. It was as if this ultimate consummation of the couple’s love in a sexual manner would somehow destroy the beauty and purity of their love-a love that I would almost call godly. It was almost-at least for me-as if that eternal, lingering last boundary, ever kept at arms length, yet on their horizon of hope, made their appetite for their higher romance never falter or wane; because they were each completely assured of the other’s equal love. It was perfectly reciprocal, without being spoken, necessarily. It was just…understood…without a single particle of doubt. This is the kind of love we all long for; we just don’t know it…because (almost) none of us has ever thought to seek this kind of love, or to hope to create it. It would never occur to any of us to even consider the existence of such love during mortality. Perhaps this is the case because it surely must not be possible for the common man or woman, in any situation, to endure self-denial in that way-to deny our natural selves, for what purpose we were created: to merge our bodies, our hearts…melded into singularity. To belong to someone that…assuredly…that completely…without doubt or even an inkling of questioning as to the validity or endurance of the love bond. Like acceptance that the Sun is always there, even behind the clouds.

I get that same sense too… it’s like she loved him from the beginning. For some reason he couldn’t reciprocate. The earliest interview I saw was David saying how the two of them spend so much time together that they had to be careful because someone will get hurt… and she mouthed “me.” You have to wonder what went on between them in those earliest of years…. Whatever it was it probably came between them. It’s too bad, I wish they had gotten together and remained together. That would have been wonderful to see. They just look strange in other relationships with other people, it doesn’t seem right… and like you said, Gillian, even most recently looked a bit sad telling a reporter “it would be nice but it’s never going to happen…”. ☹️

I am not saying they were acting but it´s true that they were trying to have a good time for them and the audience, and I would love if they were together in RL, they were my first couple I have shipped on/off camera, but there is no proof, that´s a fact. I went to an event where this was discussed by David and Gillian. It seems to be that David sees their roles as Mulder and Scully as kind of 'sacred' and he wanted to keep it special. He finds it really difficult to envisage them acting together in any roles other than Mulder and Scully. He is a real romantic, (by his own admission,) so that probably is a factor. I must say I agree with David on this.
