it’s so unpredictable. What is triggering it and how to control it, is very difficult. So many times the same food which has not been triggering, triggers suddenly. Again, the next day the same food is suitable for the bowel. It’s annoying to understand why it is happening and what led to IBS. I don’t smoke and I am teetotaller. Have a very healthy fibre rich diet but yet symptoms are weird. It becomes a viscous cycle, you end up being stressed out.

Hi Becky, I have consulted doctors over the years about my symptoms but never had a diagnosis. I always associated my symptoms with menstruation but I'm now post menopause and have the same symptoms as I've always had. These started in my early teens - I haven't had a problem for some time but now it's all back again, same as before, bloating, gas, ab pain, back pain, fatigue. Looking at your videos and other people's, I think I have had IBS all these years! I'm now 66! Thank you for sharing, I shall watch all your other videos. So glad I found you! 😊

A huge thumbs up from India Becky 👍👍👍 your videos have proved to be a godsend for someone like me after being diagnosed with IBS almost a decade back!!! It feels so good to know you're not the only one dealing with it. Especially when doctors aren't really able to help too much with what you're going through.

4:14 - so true! I feel like the gf bread from Schar with its foot long list of ingredients hurt my gut more than a piece of bread made from simple ingredients like spelt flour, water and salt. It's all just a lot of trial and error...

Gluten, dairy, HFCS, sugar, garlic, and anything high in fat are my triggers. Needless to say, eating is quite tricky lol.

Hello from Alberta , Canada. I watched your other video about your visit to the doctor. I was appalled that he put you on a laxative. Everyone knows they will exasperate a bowel or gut problem. I have had minor problems with my gut health for years..gas, bloating, some pain. Bouts of constipation. Since coming to the end of perimenopause, my symptoms have gotten worse. I do know I cant eat simple carbs and sugars. They also give me joint pain. I've been doing as much research as possible about gluten, low format diet. Etc. Unfortunately, we DO need to take our health into our own hands. As we sit around WAITING for doctor's appointments and tests, we have to do SOMETHING to help ourselves in the meantime. I know yoga and exercise helps me mentally as well as physically. Do a gratitude journal. Love.. be joyful, there's always joy in the world if we look for it. Best of luck on your journey, my thoughts are with you. ✌💛

Yes it’s so annoying that onion and garlic are in everything. I do think though that as it’s a FODMAP reaction, not an allergic reaction that it would only be larger amounts which would set off symptoms. So would probably be very unlikely cross contamination would trigger symptoms. Oligo’s Fructans is what triggers symptoms found in onions and garlic, 1gram or less (which is probably way more than a trace amount) shouldn’t cause problems theoretically. FODMAPS are not water soluble so this means that if an oil was used in cooking something with garlic and onion, it should not transfer to other foods cooked in that same oil. That is why we can use Garlic infused oil 😄
@dolphincrazed
@dolphincrazed 5 жыл бұрын
That's not entirely true. You need to remove the garlic after infusing it in oil before adding anything else to the oil; otherwise it WILL transfer to the food you are cooking due to small amounts of water present. www.monashfodmap.com/blog/cooking-with-onion-and-garlic-myths-and/

Rachelia G I was stating that trace amounts are not enough to trigger a FODMAP reaction. As IBS is not an allergy so trace amounts won’t be harmful. Like something that touched garlic for example won’t trigger symptoms.

Great video! My ways I manage my IBS in addition to what you said are: making sure my bowels are always passing stuff through so sometimes I have to use pro kinetics (your body doesn't get dependent on them) if something is causing my system to slow down. Making sure I don't eat a lot of sugar and drinking lots and lots of water.

I’ve tried so many GF bread products, they all seem to upset me. I’ve had to give them up as I can’t keep buying loaves of bread at £3-£5 per loaf only to find after a couple of slices they upset me, so frustrating! I’ve also given up eating out as EVERYTHING seems to have garlic and onion (found that out last week after eating some ‘plain’ sushi!). Stress is definitely a big thing for me, I’m the same, when I’m anxious and stressed my guts end up like a cement mixer and everything will upset it. I’m listening to a gut directed hypnotherapy cd at night and it does help.

Something I do that helps me a lot is exercise! I try to exercise every day. Cardio especially helps and so does core workouts. IBS is so unpredictable and so broad so I find it so hard to control. I don't remember the last time I went to bed not bloated.

This is SO true. I've recently had a massive flare up- missed days off work after being relatively well for over a year. So frustrating. I've just started seeing a new doctor and specialist after I felt unheard by my old GP, and am really looking forward to a second opinion! Ps. Hoping you can make some more low fodmap recipes/weekly prep videos. I need inspo after finding out I need to probably start fodmap again. Your recipes have been fantastic so far!

It comes down to awareness. The more people know about FODMAPS, the better our food service industry will become.Gluten Free products in supermarkets are currently filled with preservatives that are Hi FODMAP, rendering them useless for IBS sufferers. Gluten free snacks in the health isle are filled with hi FODMAP figs or cashews or pistachios or apple!! Or the gluten free “gut health” cook books filled with Hi FODMAP ingredients, that all of these markets are uneducated in the fact that A LARGE PERCENTAGE OF THE GLUTEN FREE POPULATION WITH ACTUAL MEDICAL REASONS, CANT EAT THEIR SHIT. So it’s up to us to familiarise ourselves with the correct ingredients that we can substitute in cooking - Low FODMAP cook books are ideal for this, particularly those from Sue Shepherd PHD, the original creator of the Low FODMAP diet, an IBS sufferer herself, and a dietitian. And I find her recipes soooo easy, and tasty. Who knew, we could make fabulous Thai curries again without onion and garlic?

Rebecca Wheeler Never have truer words been typed. So true gluten free products often have other high FODMAP ingredients I hardly buy any food products that are in a packet these days. Downside to this is I have to create most meals from scratch.

hi, becky! 5 solid suggestions! stress is such a big issue for me - if i am under a lot of stress, my gut isn't happy (i sometimes wonder if it ever is) and i feel worse. i have often thought about bio-feedback to relax the insides. just a thought. more meditation for me - i must be more diligent about it. it's not just for that moment but helps to give us a bit of control, mind over body. i hope you 3 are doing well and life is being kind. been a bit under the weather and ready to feel better here. bit hugs! ~k

Ive installed a treadmill and large yoga matt area where I do light exercise for IBS-C dominant. The yoga positions for relieving tummy pain help when I do an abdominal massage that I learned from watching a you tube video. I also take a rectal gravol at night to relax me and induce a gentle BM if I haven’t had one all day or feel too full. The exercise area is decorated with blue roses and plants, things that make me happy so the area is very pretty and its my place of zen.

I've been having cramps for a few years now, it's not so bad that it's all the time, but I'm gradually realising that I think it's alcohol that causes me really bad pain. I hate it, because it comes on when I'm out and ruins the evening. It makes me quite sad thinking about it because it has meant that I have not fully enjoyed my time with friends. I'm going to make an appointment soon and speak to my GP about it. Thank you for sharing your stories.

Although I have IBS i never had irritated stomach after consuming moderated amounts of onion, garlic & even tomatoes. So it differs from person to person. Another great tip is *always* peel vegetables & fruits before eating them. *Happy healthy lifestyle IBS mates⚘*

Corn and maize are major triggers for me and are generally used in gluten free products. Its frustrating in restaurants when a meal is listed as gluten free and I ask if they have used maize or corn instead and they have no idea so I miss have to miss out every time.

Hi Becky, would you mind if I asked you how did you know that onion and garlic are your triggers. Have you tried them? I haven’t tried them and I’m terribly scared to do so because these horrible symptoms. Also, I haven’t given it a go to the Legumes for years now and scared to do so. I’m so far away 😔 and so anxious.
@bobfrombrisbane1831
@bobfrombrisbane1831 5 жыл бұрын
Shaymaa ali I found what my triggers were from an elimination diet. I can’t speak for Becky but I am confident she used the same process. The only way you can be sure is have the exact same diet you know is ok and test one food at a time over a period of time typically one to two weeks, It is time consuming and can be tedious but is the only definitive way. Just because one person has a sensitivity towards a food does not mean another person will. Everyone is different.
@fgel18
@fgel18 5 жыл бұрын
For onion and garlic you don’t even need a week of testing to know it is a trigger food for you, most likely you will notice it as soon as you have consumed, at least that is what happens with me. As soon as I consume any trigger food my stomach goes crazy!! Just find an appropriate day maybe a weekend then try either in small amount to see if it triggers your IBS or not

Posted a comment on your "Living With IBS" video suggesting a diet of almost entirely meat to really go back to the basics. You can live on ONLY meat. But you can't live on ONLY greens. That alone should say a lot of what's good for us as humans. Consider my other comment. Best wishes with your IBS.
