Tip: Don't be afraid to type those names. They could get you something, and if they don't work, at least you tried (and maybe get stuff with "every country" option) EDIT: Bangor, Wales used to be hard to get (you'd need to type "Bangor (Wales)" or idk, a similar one, unless every country option was done, perhaps?) until a data update

It's actually so painful seeing someone either initially spell a city right BUT CHANGE IT BEFORE SUBMITTING IT (e.g. Darmstadt -> Darmstatd) or spelling a city right but not noticing a typo, and thinking the correct way of spelling it was incorrect because they weren't paying attention (e.g. Palermo typo'd as Palerno). I usually don't mention it, but it happened SO MANY TIMES that i just had to mention it. Also it's Fort William... Not Fort WilliamS, Fort WilliAM Also instead of using Google Maps, you can click the "What Did I Miss" option in the results screen. Surprised you missed it honestly, it's in an incredibly obvious spot. The reason why Bangor, Wales was the rarest city was because it was overshadowed by Bangor, Northern Ireland. So if you just type "Bangor" it only gives you Bangor, Northern Ireland (unless you're using the Every Country setting, which no one likes using because it gives you credit for cities that you don't even know). Aside from using the Every Country setting, the only way to get Bangor, Wales is typing "Bangor, Wales, UK" into the box. Also the reason why it sometimes gave you the city when you "misspelt" it was because it accepts names from different languages too (e.g. Lubiana for Ljubljana, or Cologne for Köln, so yes you literally could've entered Konigsberg for Kaliningrad) Doesn't make the attempt any worse, it's just something that I wanted to point out. Good attempt :)

This took more research and history knowledge, as well as many attempts, but I've reached 328. All the capitals, 32/34 cities over a million (the missing ones were Samara and Ufa, Russia), 74/95 over 500K, and 231/700 over 100K. 50 in Italy, 41 France, 38 Germany, 35 Spain. Ukraine, Greece, Britain, and European-Russia are double digits, the rest have an average of 2-ish cities. Still, only got to 24% population. Because there are also many, MANY tiny cities that get small percentage points.

Letting you name a village with a 123 residents as city is really interesting to me. Because it allows for such interesting trivia about countries. Now your teeny tiny village name Ore can be mentioned in a game like this. To make this slightly political, should this game count the destroyed cities of Ukraine? And if this game can include them, should they count as a population as 0? Or should it use pre-war numbers? If we want to get into yikes-y territory, should Russian fascists get to count as dwellers in these cities? Or not? Please note I'm only looking at this through this website, a website that allows a little hamlet to count as a city.

A lot of those population figures are wrong or misleading. Just off the top of my head, they halved the population of Dublin, probably because of the way the city is carved up into different municipal local government areas. I didn't catch what they said Paris' population was, but going by the size of the circle, they rate it as _significantly_ smaller than London when in fact they are 'much of a muchness' with each other. Without laboriously deconstructing the whole thing, the problem seems to be that most cities are significantly 'over' or 'underbounded', compared to the area that is actually built~up - which is to my mind, almost always the most valid criterion for what constitutes 'the city' when discussing it's population, but all too often they either go with the 'Metropolitan Area', which will bring in a lot of the nearby dormitory towns and rural population; or in cities that are governed via a patchwork of local authority areas, they will simply give the population of the biggest or most central 'city council' area (or equivalent), or the one named for the city of which they are a smaller part. Again with Paris, I have seen its population given as anything from roughly 2,000,000 people, to 8,000,000 or more. In America, disparities in population statistics can be even wider! One hopes that however they've assessed population figures in this game, that they've at least been consistent (or as consistent as they _can_ be, anyway!)
@NotJulius44
@NotJulius44 16 күн бұрын
@@richiehoyt8487 the population of paris is usually counted with île-de-france: Metropolitan Area: The Paris Region, or Île-de-France, covers 12,012 km2 and has a population of 12,213,447 as of January 2018, or 18.3 percent of the population of France, and it was estimated to be around 12,271,794 inhabitants in January 2023.

Fennoscandia is a much more logical geographical region if you ignore the culture/history reasons for including Denmark
@hhyukhyhhg
@hhyukhyhhg Жыл бұрын
@@ibx2cat Fennoscandia yes does include Finland and exclude Denmark, because the majority of Denmark isn't on the scandinavian peninsula. But the word Scandinavia encompasses only Sweden, Norway and Denmark. Because of said cultural and historical reasons, as you mentioned. But also linguistical, since swedes, danes and norwegians can understand eachother's languages interchangably, while finnish stems from indo-uralic, along with hungarian. Finland is much more closely related to russia and the rest of the slavs historically and culturally. That's why we have the two distinctions Fennoscandia and Scandinavia. I hope none of this comes across as demeaning or anything of the sort, I'm a huge fan of your channel, but couldn't resist being an offended scandinavian dane 😂
