On October 27, 2024, we celebrated World Day for Audiovisual Heritage! ICCROM highlights the essential role that audiovisual archives play in safeguarding our shared stories and collective memory.
As we continue to conserve and promote heritage, we reaffirm our commitment to ensuring that these records remain accessible for generations to come.
At ICCROM, we support efforts to protect and digitize these invaluable resources, knowing their preservation is crucial for fostering a deeper understanding of our shared world. This short video exemplifies how audiovisual heritage represents our cultural identity and history, enabling us to learn from the past and shape our future.
It represents activities carried out during PAT 96: Pan-American course on Conservation and Management of Earthen Archaeological Heritage, organized in Peru in 1996 by ICCROM, Getty Conservation Institute, CRATerre-EAG and National Institute of Culture of Peru (INC). It shows local intangible heritage during the opening ceremony, fabrication of adobe bricks and other earthen building techniques, as well as stabilization and consolidation interventions carried out by course participants at archaeological sites such as Chan Chan and Huaca de la Luna. Finally, the course closing shows a civic ceremony: the protective embrace among lecturers, participants and the local community.
This video is an extraction of several videos digitized in 2023 during the ICCROM Digital Transformation Project. On this occasion, ICCROM Archives digitized their audiovisual holdings, comprising over 1,200 audio and video recordings and motion picture films. These document preservation activities are carried out on sites, monuments and collections from all over the world. After digitization, they are being catalogued and made progressively available through our ICCROM Archives web portal (archives.iccrom.org).
Join us in celebrating the importance of conserving these treasures and recognizing the urgent need for action to ensure their continued accessibility.
