My guess for the reason you can only take dead trees near the lake is this: live trees are holding the soil in place on the edge of the lake while dead trees are not - by removing the dead ones you leave space for new ones to grow on soil that could otherwise be eroded. Have a great holiday Jay. Love from the UK.

and you would be mostly wrong ... dead wood is dry green wood is NOT ... green burns colder than dead ... the dead wood also holds resin which makes for an excellent fire starter as well ...

And have a wind generator and or a couple of solar pannels to trickle charge it
@jemtec15 сағат бұрын
The Anker Upgrade was exactly what you needed. Ive been thinking this since last year. A good solar array would also do the trick and help you rely less on the generator. Anytime those items fail, you slow down in some manner. Very risky in extreme cold! Great move Jay! Love your Channel!

Also if your battery isn't hard to remove trickle charge or just let it stay warm inside the cabin at night. Keeping the wind and direct frost or or snow off the sled might help.

In regards to cutting “Green” trees within the lake perimeter, there are several reasons. Aesthetic appeal is one reason, Protection of Riparian Zones to avoid sedimentation in the water and preventing erosion. Protection of wildlife habitats, and finally you want to prevent water runoff speeds increasing which green trees can do as they help with soil stability and can prevent pollutants flowing into the lake.

Huge upgrade on the Anker. Just be aware they don't like being cold. Would recommend getting fire started and using a Buddy Heater by it before you turn in on when you first get there. Let it warm up. Also file that chain often and have a spare chain/bar with wedges in case saw gets pinched or have two saws with you if possible.
@teflone12153 минут бұрын
A sophisticated power station like this would have a built in heater and would warm itself slowly till appropriate temps have been met. If this doesnt have a heater, its a complete failure of a company such as anker. I would be astonished if it doesnt have a heater.
@jerryrogers97033 сағат бұрын
On the battery look at the cold cranking amps. The higher the cranking amps the more power it's going to have to start the snowmobile 3:29 now you can use the jackery that you had, for the snowmobile and put the trickle charger on it and just leave it on there while you're at the cabin. 7:5 7:59 9

So I was quite amused that it was -25c inside the cabin, -19c outside, and the first thing that needed to be plugged in to the Anker was the refrigerator. It just seems like a very first-world problem that you need to get the stove lit to heat up the cabin and when it gets warm, you need to run a refrigerator to have a cold place for stuff. I understand that outside is just too cold for stuff that goes normally in the refrigerator, but surely there must be a better way?

Lots of CA foods made their way across the border, but not that sandwich. Made me chuckle a little.

Regarding green trees on the shoreline: I expect the reason has to do with shoreline erosion. A whole street had to be condemned in my town after a dam removal dropped the waterline 20 feet below the previous treeline. The hillside exposed by the reduced water level eroded within a few years.

I know you have a lot to do, but if I was you, maybe in combination with a covered wood shed(couple cord covered storage), this coming summer, I'd build a "heated garage", an enclosed storage room, "garage" for the snowmobile, generator, chain saw. Night before, early morning, you can get a stove going, to pre-heat, warm up, just a few degrees, to make easier starting....you could potentially even make it a "drive through" doors on both sides, so can drive snow mobile right through. Taking 'green' trees, intelligently, 'thinning' the forest, is actually good for the forest, lets the sunlight in and you stack the green trunk lengths for a year or 2, to 'season', then split, that makes great firewood.

Great video. Really enjoy watching. My friend I have to say something about the way you use the chainsaw. I use to live in the NWT and most recently worked about 300km north of Yellowknife so I know up that far north you are really isolated from some civilization and personal safety is paramount. I seen you start your saw in the “drop start” way with the chain brake off which can cause a hazard to you should something happen. I would recommend starting it between the legs method when in deep snow. Where you place the saw handle/throttle with the chain brake on between your legs just above knee height with your right hand hold the cross handle and pull the cord. I’ve been using this method for years and is taught in chainsaw courses. I only say this because I don’t want to see you get hurt and help up there isn’t minutes away but hours. Take care.

Glad you found two good trees to cut. You have to have wood to survive in freezing conditions for sure. Better stock up on coffee as it looks like the prices are getting ridiculous. Hope you have a nice day off with your family. When are you going to bring your little dog to play in the snow?
@seanbryk72854 сағат бұрын
Hey Jay. Not sure if you know this, but Stihl chainsaws have a winter/summer shutter that activates a carburetor pre-heater. Some have a slide, and some you flip in the airbox. Google it, it will help your saw run better in those frigid temps.
