Metal has value. Rocks don't. You can always melt the metal down or do some chemistry and get a new use out of it. Once you cut a rock, that's it. And you can't use a cut rock anywhere else other than decoration. You can definitely have jewelry to pass down, especially ones with a "utility". Engagement rings and signet rings for example. Passing down [unmodified] luxury watches is very common. I think its important for you to distinguish what is sentimental and what is monetary. If you're looking for monetary value i.e an investment, just buy a bar of precious metal. Alternatively, buy an in-demand luxury watch in factory condition (no engraving, no gemstones unless it came from the factory). Stainless steel Rolex tool watches are hard to secure, always in demand and never drop in value. Patek Philippe's never lose value. As soon as you give something sentiment, it has no value to anyone but you. Why would you wear someone else's custom jewelry? That's the issue with Hip-Hop jewelry. Lot's of sentiment but very few have monetary value. If you're aware of that, and you're okay with it then you good. There are exceptions, which have sentiment and value. Jay Z owns a 2 mill one-of-a-kind Rolex made by a famous watchmaker. Championship rings would be worth money. But that's rare. I'm just a guy on the internet. Absolutely do some research for yourself.
