I was going by my list of and I did buy 1 public enemy album when i got into to rap in the early 90's but I wasn't as into them as I was the other artist on my list. I'm 41 years of age and I've been listening to Hip Hop since it began in the late 70s. I've heard a lot of good rappers but I don't place all rappers in the same category. I'm not talking about style and I'm not even talking about genre. I'm talking about type. In my research, I've discovered that there are three types of rappers (Lyricists, Poets and for lack of a better word Flowists) Lyricists are the wordsmiths who you can tell are highly literate. Most of them speak to your intellect. Their raps are designed to make you focus on their words often to the detriment of their beats and instrumental. Next there are the Poets. Poets are abstract. They speak to your heart and make you feel their words or they'll rap in a way that make you have to think twice about what you think you're hearing by expressing their points with clever arrangements of words, sentences and phrases. Then there are the Flowists. They are expert at blending with beats and instrumentals. They rap like they're surfing on the beat. They usually have really good cadences that sound so good you may not care about what they're saying. I'm going to list the top ten Lyricists and then the top five Poets and Flowists. I'm interested in other people's opinion on my take. Lyricists: 1. K Rino 2. Rakim 3. Nas 4. Brutha Lynch Hung 5. Jada Kiss 6. Jay Z 7.Eminem 8. Scarface 9. Ice Cube 10.
