I love tie-dying onesies for baby shower gifts. Yours turned out great! Thanks for sharing. I find spirals are really hard on the thick layers of onesies. But yours worked out nicely. Also a tip: They sell onesies at The Dollar Tree. For the boy onesies I got light blue for a couple of them. I believe I saw pink as well for girls. (I like to dye on light colors, so one color is already on it.)

Oh my goodness, so cute! I actually did 8 onsies about two weeks ago. They were gifts for my boss and his wife. They are expecting their first baby in November. They were in love with them. I would love to see how you would dye one. Also, I was wondering why do you prefer to dye when they are completely dry rather than damp? Does it make a big difference? Do you sell your tie dye items anywhere online?

Thank you! I haven't dyed any denim myself. I think the ones I've seen look really cool though. I usually dye them dry to get better color saturation. Since the fabric fibers will only hold so much liquid, I wait until the soda ash solution in the fibers is dry and then the fibers will be able to accept the dye better. On a fold like these it doesn't really matter. I really notice the difference with thick folds like mandalas. If a mandala is too damp when the dye is applied, you will sometimes get big white streaks in the middle. Also, since I purchased my Panda Spin Dryer most of my shirts dry out in a matter of hours after I tie them. Sometimes though the dye will bead up on a shirt that is dry instead of soaking in immediately. It doesn't happen often for me, but when it does I just take a bit of the soda ash solution and put it in a squirt bottle and lightly mist the shirt before continuing with the dye. What are the Advantages of using dry dye compared to liquid dye?

It's just a different look. Most dye powder is a mixture of several colors of dry dye. When it is mixed with water to make a liquid, the dye becomes uniform, and it will be a solid color on your item. When it is used as a powder, it will "split" into the colors that were mixed to make the dye when it comes in contact with the ice. Therefore, the dye will be more varied in color and usually in intensity. Not all colors of dye are mixtures, but most are. Some dye colors are mixed using a lot of colors and the effects are really cool when they split. Since ice dyeing has become so popular, several of the dye suppliers are now mixing colors especially for cool splits with ice dyeing.

Hi there, I'm just starting out tie dying and I'm doing the ice dye method. I made a boat out of foil like you showed but was wondering if I should take it out of the boat once the ice melts? I'm worried it's just going to absorbing that pool of mixed die all night. I see sometimes you ice over a rack so the water drains thru. Not sure what the difference is? Thank you

I use both methods of ice dyeing. The first is rack dyeing where I put the shirt on a rack, and I let the dye and ice run through the shirt and collect in a tub. The second method is "muck" dyeing. That is where I put the shirt inside a container of some sort, and allow it to sit in the runoff from the ice and dye (the runoff is called "muck"). They are both yield great results - it just depends on what look you are going for. If you are going to "muck" dye it is important not to disturb the container that your shirt is in. I do ice dyes indoors and outdoors. If they are outdoors, I try to keep them out of the direct sun either by putting them under a tree or placing a lid on top of them.

I usually use Gerber onesies. They are 100% cotton and are fairly easy to find.
