Better to spin the fabric in the washer to just barely damp. Fully saturated shirt can make dye penetration more difficult or less intense. Store in a bag until you dye it, or in the soda ash water bucket. Also you get more variation by binding the fabric with rubber bands. Procion dyes are identical wherever you buy them, the only difference is that Dharma mixes the primaries from Jacquard to make different colors. Like Daffodil from Dharma will “break” whereas Lemon Yellow will not as it is only a primary. Ice dyeing separates the colors into their components, which then interact with others, which is why you get such cool interactions.
@justagirlsd30003 жыл бұрын
What do you mean by break?
@johncspine27873 жыл бұрын
@@justagirlsd3000 break as in separate into different components, giving a halo or other effect. Some colors are pure, and stay the same in ice dyeing, others break into cool effects and each component reacts with the other colors differently, that’s what makes 8ce dyeing so interesting..

You would never really rinse out as soon as the ice melts as the dye needs about 12 to 24 hours to set. Some take longer than others especially colours like cerulean blue. Also do not ever ring out the shirt like this. You will risk losing all the lighter highlights which obviously you did as the top looked so much better with lots of contrast before you ring it out like that. Tip would be to rinse under tap leave the scrunch in the colander until water is almost clear. Also speeding up the ice melt can affect the colour split. The longer it takes the ice to melt the more prominent the colour splits, this has got to do with certain colours split at different temperatures.

Does anyone have tips and tricks to avoid brown spots on cotton? I used ice dye on sweatpants and crew neck. On the pants there were random brown spots/specks. I’m not sure why?
@franknstein5376 Жыл бұрын
Extremely late repy, but it may be some random colour interaction? Especially if you used complementary colours, them mixing may end up creating grayish/brownish hues... if your pant wasn't white to begin with it's even easier

Glad I sped it up and skimmed through This 40 min video. At 35:35 time mark when finally took it out, first look was great.... Then you stuck it in the water and wrung it out and lost any white or sharp contrast lines...when you squeezed it. Obviously you were tired and needed to be done.

Can multiple items be washed together?
@TruthMatters76912 жыл бұрын
Yes! I’ve done it many times. Just make sure each item has been batched for a minimum of 24 hours, and then rinsed thoroughly til water is nearly clear. I then wash with synthrapol in hot water. The colors do not transfer to the other items.

ALWAYS, ALWAYS ALWAYS WEAR A MASK WHILE WORKING WITH DYE POWDERS!
@cavalli8214 жыл бұрын
This is a total messed up job up job unfortunately. Firstly to anyone reading this, please wear a mask while spraying dye and do not do it indoors. I have been dyeing for a long long time and those dye particles are super fine and toxic if inhaled. Only take off the mask once the dye is dissolved into the water. The way she is spraying dyes is dangerous and should be avoided. Everything beyond this rule is her way of doing it so i cant say its wrong. However, my opinion is that this is a crudely done job - from the way the ice is being melted to the way the fabric is being washed. Hopefully people look at other sources too before using this one for ice dyeing.
@johncspine27874 жыл бұрын
You must let it rest at 70 degrees F for 24 hours after the ice melts..too much hurry in this example..
@slumberspeak4 жыл бұрын
yeah.. I was wondering about this. Everywhere else says to wait 24 hours. Weird. I wonder what kinda effect (if any) the heat gun has on the designs (vs just leaving it to melt outside)
@LeticiaSPandaMcfly64 жыл бұрын
I was watching the whole video thinking either I wouldn’t see the final results since she’s at a studio or they would wait the 24 and add in the final results. I was surprised when she said the wrapping wasn’t needed. I’m like since when? I always wrap mine once it’s melted and let it sit for at least 24.
