Ice Fishing a River for Catfish!! (Tips and Tricks)

Ice fishing a river is pretty awesome, especially catching cats on the short rods. Here's how I approach it and set up for it. Hope you pick up a few tips. Maybe you'll learn what not to do haha.
The only reason it's possible this year is because the water is so low, and the current is almost non-existent. With that being said, I make a point to always bring my safety gear (Float suit, ice picks, and spud bar). Ice varies on all bodies of water, so it's best to usually take your time and check ice as you move around.

So glad you take precautions. We could only get crappie minnows one time years ago and gold hooks and we caught absolutely everything thru the ice that trip. Bluegill, largemouth, walleye, and channels. It's all we use now and dead stick em. Just vary the depth because they'll come in higher than you think. We make marks in inches on the handle of our ladle. So you can use it to measure the ice that way you don't have to put your hand in the water.
