In the snow-covered plains of northern Mongolia live the Tsaatan nomads. They rely on fishing to gain a meager existence, but the lakes in the taiga are shallow and the ice thick. So they have to come up with an idea to spot the fish and catch it.
Sticks, nets and a bunch of joyful experts: that’s all it takes to do it. It may not be the greatest catch, but they’re surely having fun. And if it ends with a family diner by the fire under the tent, what more could we want?
We followed these Mongolian fishermen in their methodic, unusual and peaceful fishing process. A fishing trip in Tsaatan territory…

I am Mongolian and I've thought that reindeer Dukha people speak more of paleo-Siberian or Turkic dialects but when I listen to them they speak more like Mongolian dialect. But probably it is somehow recent transformations of their language

This was Beautiful! I can't believe their dedication, wow and here Some of us think that, we've done something out of Ordinary, by going Steelhead or Salmon fishing in the Rain or Cold winter day!! I'm Sure no Cold weather that I've experienced, comes even Close to their Extreme cold!! Can Someone at "SLICE", tell me, what species of fish that was, to me with limited View, it looked like either a Salmonid or maybe an Unusual "Strain"/Race of Arctic Char!! I'll formally give Credit in a book that I'm writing!! Thanks 😊

There is another method of pulling a net under the ice that was used in North American. It is using a diver board that when pulled heads down at a steep angle and then floats up at a slant away from you. You keep working it until you can get the string at the other hole and then use it to pull the net . Having ice you can see through is pretty important hear either way. Guess you could also make the second hole when you have reached your extent instead of having to steer it to hit an existing hole.

I’m from Minnesota and have ice fished all my life. This is outstanding ‘technology’. However, I’m not sure how badass cold it is. You can’t see their breath. The air has to be incredibly dry. And around a lake and woods, that’s doubtful. It’s a mistake movies make all the time. That said, these men are badass anyway.

@@eveneeee -Good points all. Internet civility is a thing for me, so thanks for being civil and not calling me names or telling me to go to hell. Below freezing I’ll grant you. BLAST freezing, as the OP stated, is a stretch. Maybe you’ll get blast freezing, but I’m not sure. I’ve ice fished when it was pretty cold, and it took a bit for the fish to freeze. For sure, these guys are getting blasted by the wind. I’ve got no beef with the OP; sorry if I offended you, Mr Coughlan. Actually, I’d be interested to know if you pronounce your name rhyming with ‘cough’, or with ‘cog’. Let’s all go have a beer and a sandwich.

These people call themselves as "Tsaatan" but they are termed as "Dukha Turks" by anthropologists. I'm from Turkey and I caught common words occasionaly when they were speaking. They've kept our original lifestyle and stayed close to our ancestral homeland in eastern Siberia (Orkhon). We've moved westward and settled in Anatolia, our Turkic dialect (Oghuz Turkic) taken many loanwords from the neighboring people, so much so that we cannot communicate with the original Turks nowadays.
