Deep in the sub-Arctic boreal forest of far Northern Mongolia, straddling the border of Russian Siberia, a unique minority group lives in the sprawling tundra. Practising the same way of life for thousands of years, this indigenous tribe is among the world’s smallest ethnic minorities and last reindeer herding nomads.
But today, the Tsaatan people are facing a threat which may have a great impact on their survival: the government of Ulan Bator wants to force all children to go to school from the age of 6.
For these families, it is a heartbreak. And it is also a questioning of their whole way of life. So what to do?: Renounce their traditions to offer their children a different destiny or disobey? The Tsaatan are undoubtedly facing one of the greatest challenges of their existence.

I wonder how they feel when they would find out that many people would agree with them that this world is going in the wrong direction.

I visited Tsaatan people up in the mountains, near Tsaaganur, in 2008. They didn't seem as content and happy as the folks in this movie. It's a really tough life, in tough conditions. Tsaatan are struggling to make a living. Many are pushed to look for other perspectives. Traditional ways are great, when you are observing them from the comfort of your home, on KZbin. In reality, it's a struggle. The world is changing and it is hard to stay relevant.

I wonder if anybody got the impression that this is not a tough life. The world is changing and i hope some prople who are able to live where they are without relying on excessive amounnts of energy from somewhere else will be left when the delusion of continuous growth and unlimited consumption collapses

22 years ago I was there with them. It took few days by horse to get to their temporary summer place. I loved every second, they were so hospitable, sharing everything with me. The matriarch was also a shaman and she told beautiful stories I still remember. This video made me very homesick.

I love how they speak so contently about everything, it’s a true karmic lesson for everyone watching… “I love living here, I couldn’t live anywhere else.” “My wife is so strong, she could live anywhere. And she loves me.” “I am so happy with my life.” “We have everything and we are free here.” “What’s the most difficult thing in my life? In summer, the reindeer sometimes try to get in the tents. That’s the hardest thing.” “You scare me. Your hair is like a hedgehog.” (To her husband) “Oh? I’ll do my hair again, then.” lol! 😂

I went there in summer. It took 2 days for the train and car rides and 8 hours on the horseback to get to their campsite. Love staying overnight in a true teepee and hugging reindeers. I’d love to go again but in winter for fluffy reindeers. Though I don’t know how to poop outdoors below 0 degree. Maybe it’ll be another constipating trip.

What a wonderful documentary, thank you 🙏 It is very difficult to know what would be the best solution 😞. Their way of life is so beautiful but very hard, but at the same time, if everyone moves to cities, will they be better of? Will there be decent jobs for them? And, worse, a survivalist culture that will lose their knowledge 😢

Just noticed, and I’m curious, why is the title saying “the dilemma” if the people do not present anything remotely similar to a dilemma?! They’re happy-go-lucky and thankful, joyful nomadic people. I see nothing of a dilemma…other than it possibly being “changed” one day by land-claiming corporations, or government policies maybe. I think the school for the kids isn’t a bad idea… things don’t have to change THAT much, but of course, it is not my life, and I’m not there.

50:31 ''He wonders how long his children can ENDURE THIS, lost in the Taiga underneath a simple Tipi'' Ehh they will be fine as they have been for generations, seems the documentary maker is a little bit biased? Am i the only one seeing these people have everything they need in life? The only stress and sadness have is the modern world trying to suck them in because Mongolia is trying to modernize and compete with its neighbours, at the cost of the happiness of its people. Not to blame the Mongolian government its a logical step, but you dont want to be like us westerners, rich but anxious and stressed, depressed. Live your life people of the Taiga, we gave that up long time ago for comfort and money
@misha_gulko
@misha_gulko 8 ай бұрын
they are just people, like everyone else. It's easy to speak of freedom from comfort and money when you live in comfort and have money. Imagine getting sick and there is no one to treat you. They are simple folks, but if they could - many of them would trade their freedom for comfort. They just can't, because they are not adjusted to that more comfortable world. That's why they are saying "I wouldn't be able to live anywhere else".

Both the people tsaatans and reindeer population need some mixing up with other like tribes in North pole. As they are at brink of extinction, a lots of inbreeding due to isolation and migration further into wilderness seeking pasture, food for reindeers due to global warming effects in taiga
@mauricecalliss1303
@mauricecalliss1303 8 ай бұрын
There's your answer folks these guys go to school separated from family and a traditional way of life and they don't know what to do. W t f .defeats the object. Yes a little education helps but if your a traditional tribal child your culyre is there already for you. Eat scenario is to send teachers out to the field so they can keep in their culture an ways .education isn't everything some things are more important .the world's to broken to be able to provide these people with anything better than what they originally had. Sending them to school this way will cause more damage in their situation. I'm not against education but be realistic .
