I’m watching videos about inline reels trying to convince myself I need one, just because I fell in love with the Black Betty Trick Shop special edition aesthetics. 😅

As with all of your videos, extremely well presented, fair and balanced. Me: extremely cold weather: a bottle of B&B, some scones, and a roaring fireplace.

love my in lines but in super cold weather 8°F or lower they start to seize. i have changed out the thick freese with oil and have had better luck but sometimes the clutch will remain open and i’ll go to set the hook and just free spools and makes a mess unless you catch it fast. so spinning reels for me in cold weather hole hopping. in lines for shallow water and in the hut

Your spinning reel should have a back reel selector switch. Then you can reel backwards and keep the line under tension. I use both types, but my older in line reels don't have the free spool so line has to come out against the drag. I use those only in shallow water. Less than 10 or 12 feet.
@spiltmilt3 жыл бұрын
It does as as Pflueger's do but Shimano killed that on nearly all their spinning reel models a few years back.
@emmettmitchell67734 жыл бұрын
I think that the drag on a spinning reel is so much better than inline. So on my bigger bass and walleye set ups are spinning and smaller is online which never has memory or tangles.

I have the Clam Gravity in-line reel and I hate it. The line doesn’t stay on it correctly and I’m constantly taking the spool off and fixing it. I’m switching back to the spinning reel.

I always have problems with my eyelets freezing. Fishing the river today, sunny not that cold, I thought my reel wasn't working, then I saw the ice on the eyelets. I've tried that reel magic wd40 type stuff, doesn't work.

I appreciate the info. I kinda thought the inlines were just expensive fly reels...it seems that's kind of what they are. Personally, I never rely on a drag system and prefer to be able to backreel which is why I use spinning reels. There's nothing like being able to control every move of a big fish! Modern electronics negate the issue of missing a fish on the drop as you can see them and that's only thing I use the drag for, lol! Just my opinion of course, cool vid!

A Centerpin is the best kind of reel, you should try it
@woodscrafter19713 жыл бұрын
@@lakesimcoeicefishing Is Centerpin an inline? (I assume it is.) I've tried inlines and I'm just not a fan. For me it takes too long to get the lure down in deep water and too long to reel a fish up. But I'm always open to new ideas if I'm missing something important! Please elaborate on why you like them and in what situations you use them if you don't mind.

Great video Milt I hate to correct you on the inline reels. The gear ratio on my 13 Fishing Freefall Ghost is 2.5:1, Eagle Claw In Line Ice Reel 2.6:1 My fly reels are 1:1
@spiltmilt4 жыл бұрын
As mentioned in another comment I was specifically referring to the Black Betty Free Fall. It 1:1. In general inline reels will be lower gear ratios than spinning reels
@corymcintosh5343 жыл бұрын
The free fall is not 1:1...its 3:1 they pull 24in a crank cheaper fly reel style are 1:1
@funkeypunk20053 жыл бұрын
I believe he is referring to the black betty in-line (1:1)by 13 fishing which is around $42 compared to the black Betty free fall(2.5:1) which is around $75

very cool. I just ordered my first ice fishing rod. Should get here on Tuesday! I've been out on the ice 2 times this year. Here in Burns, Oregon we only have maybe 3 inches of ice so far... a little sketchy, but doable. 12/5/2020

I think you miss spoke on the inline when you said there 1:1 gear ratio. I have a freefall ghost and its 2.5:1 and picks up 18 or 19 inches of line i forgot which
@spiltmilt4 жыл бұрын
My Black Betty is 1:1. I should have noted that it varies by manufacturer although it does tend to be lower than spinning reels in general
@connorerhardt17674 жыл бұрын
@@spiltmilt must be an older one then! With the 2.5:1 on one3s new reels makes them that much better so if yours is 1:1 you for sure should buy the new ghost freefall. I used it for walleye last week just to see what would happen and its almost as smooth as my sienna’s.

I know some monofilament lines are formulated to be less brittle and have less memory in colder temps but for the most part I think its a gimmick. I just use normal 4 lb fireline or 2 lb Seaguar fluorocarbon

I noticed that some ice specific line I purchased last year was more pliable and had less memory than not ice line of the same brand.

What reel would you suggest for ice fishing deep water for larger fish? I have a few lakes around 550 feet in depth & want the ability to catch sheefish in the ~50 pound range.

Not bad for the price. They don’t have the free fall feature so you have to turn the handle to engage the drag system but otherwise are very smooth

I absolutely hate using a spinning reel for jigging! Much rather use a baitcaster style. Just got the 13 Fishing Descent which looks and feels like a decent reel. Going to be using it jigging deep for crappie with 4 lb test. One thing to note is this reel does not have a line guide so your finger will have to guide the line as you reel in line.

I guess I just have crappy luck with Pfluger. Every single one, the anti-reverse fails when it gets below freezing. I always test any new reel just because now, and put them in the freezer for a few minutes to see how it would do on the ice. Every Quantum I own, from old junk from the 90's to my newest model is fine. Ditto for all my Shimano's. I don't have a single Pfluger that will work in the cold. 🤷🏻♂️
