Unconsciously aware... what is a critical point! Never thought of it that way, but it sure would help when fatigue sets in, that your brain still moves your hands into the correct position. When you're tired, your movement slows and your hands drop or lag. Training your body and your mind to be in the necessary position at all times without consciously thinking about it, is a game-changer. Having your hands in the right place at the end of the game can make the difference between the win and the loss. Thanks, Maria!

My pleasure to help out Jonathan - I only started playing goalie on the ice 4-years ago to learn more about the movements and muscles so I could be a better strength coach to you guys. It is tough to pick up some of the movements, but deliberate practice and building the body that can do those movements is the way to go. Glad to know you.

Absolutely love your stuff. And the quality of the videos has come so far from the beginning. I no longer feel silly for doing shuffle drills in the backyard with my hands out far in front. For taller goalies like myself with a naturally wide flare, I feel like the most important thing to remain conscious of is what my core and hands are doing as I push. All too often I'm leaving my hands behind as I push from side to side in effort to make a save. Thanks for the reminders. You're the best.

Lady! You have no idea how much this just helped me! I have been looking for these tips forever. I'm doing this stuff now. I'll let you know how they improve my game. Thank you so much. They make so much sense. I'm a 52 year old adult men's league goalie, playing with guys half my age mostly and doing well. But what you just showed me is absolutely what I have been missing. My teammates are great, but not the best on D. They always admit they leave me hanging out to dry. I don't care and have always dealt with it, because quite frankly, I love them. I gotta work a little harder. So thank you for this. These exercises will be very helpful.

Just watching this video today. Im a casual goalie always looking for more advice. Sometimes I feel the low in the legs advice makes me feel small for those shooting high on me. Im not that big either but I definitely do understand the point about being able to get down early for low shots. From my experience I often can get beat high blocker so I try and stand tall. Anyway thank you for the video! Lots of good things to think about
@goalietraining

It all depends on the location of the shooter. The further out the shooter is the taller you can be in your stance, the closer they get, the lower you will get.

I'm an old forward who has been moonlighting as a goalie last 3 years. Your video's have been the most helpfull. I do a lot of hot/ power yoga and their are a lot of similarities that I can appreciate and work on. Balance and movement while staying square is my biggest challange. I'm smaller frame to so any tips for smaller goalies and coverage would help. Thanks!
@goalietraining
@goalietraining 4 жыл бұрын
Ah - ha ... confirming my suspicion that everyone secretly wants to be a goalie :) For smaller goalies positioning and box control are really key. Your positioning relative to the puck needs to be bang on so you are giving up as little net as possible. That is not my area of expertise, but spending time working on that will be key. From a physical perspective it is all about speed and stability, so building some goalie strength and then making sure your movement and agility patterns are efficient will help you play a more patient game. I hope that helps.

Nose on the puck is key, its like any other sport keep your eye on the ball, obviously you need to read plays but you can learn use your peripheral vision and fraction of a second glances. Eyes on the puck (peripherals on other players/play being set up)...... eyes on the play/players (peripherals on the puck). Also there are good games and tests you can look up to improve reflexes. And in the end you will be like a impenetrable fat ninja-crab guarding its nest.

I find that I have trouble with my 5-hole, and seeing this kinda had me thinking about my stance as a whole. I tend to be wider naturally, and it keeps me open. Does some of this off ice stuff in regards to legs stamina also help with that, or should I be focusing on a different drill to get my muscles to remember to drop closed, rather than fast?
@goalietraining
@goalietraining 3 жыл бұрын
It is more of a motor pattern to change your stance and close that 5-hole quickly, but developing more strength and stamina will give you more options to use different depths based on how the play develops. Does that make sense?

Please keep in mind that your game will chance due to the conditions of the ice. When you start the ice is fast because it’s smooth. But after about 5 to 6 minutes, conditions change due to used ice! Upper core is important once ice conditions change!
@goalietraining
@goalietraining 3 жыл бұрын
Good point. When you say "upper core is important once ice conditions change" I'm not sure exactly what area or movement you mean. Do you mean there will be more resistance due to the increased friction as the ice deteriorates and therefore you will need to use more rotary core power?

I just saw your video. Hmm... looks like a 36 year old goalie might increase his save % with your video. It is interesting you say that because I often suggest martial arts as good cross training or a good second sport for young goalies.

Any of yall doin this stuff at your local Planet Fittness and people looking at you like you are a total nut? Haha. Starbucks Product placement nice:) Good info. I need to be more subconsciously aware of where my glove hand is (hopefully not falling behind the pad) when moving. It's tough to teach an old goalie new tricks. What's wired in (as a reaction in your spine!) is very difficult to change. Best to learn good habits early! Even the old skate save technique I learned from Jim Park's The Puck Stops Here is something I do by accident now and then.
@goalietraining
@goalietraining 3 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah... lots of strange looks, the BEST is when you start to see people trying out 'your' drills having no idea what it's for. You are right, tough to learn those new habits, but when you can deliberately practice with your off-ice training, it helps. Good luck with it and when in doubt, you can't go wrong with the old skate save.

Throw your goalie stick at the skaters head , gain an extra 500 lbs, and modify your goalie pads, gloves and shoulder pads with an extra 13 inches. Oh yes, drink a lot coffee. Kidding: good stuff

Knee staying over the ankle (not going over the toe) ideology should be eliminated from the face of the earth, especially when it comes to athletes. Goalies should be forward with their weight in stance, pushes, recoveries, etc. and forward knees (over the toes) allow for significant addition of power in many movements as long as the lower extremity is strong from the ankles to the hips (and the rest of the body of course).
@goalietraining
@goalietraining 3 жыл бұрын
I think you misunderstood - or I didn't say it clearly - I was not suggesting the tibia should be perpendicular to the floor (that would be knees over ankles) - as you see from the side angle view - my knees are in front of my ankles where my shin angle and back angle are parallel. I definitely should have said 'ahead of my ankles' or something like that - but I agree - I haven't taught that the knee shouldn't go ahead of the toes in probably 25 years - thanks for catching that though.
