My daughter literally watched this video on Thursday, and on Sunday she was having some of the symptoms you described. Had she not watched your video a few days before, she wouldn’t have been so convinced that she had appendicitis. She didn’t even know what it was before your video and we thought she just had a stomach bug. She got admitted to the hospital later that night and she is now recovering from the appendectomy. Reason your stomach has to be empty during surgery: there's a chance of vomiting/stuff coming up during surgery if you have food in you. When you're knocked out, you don't have a gag reflex, so you can choke to death unless you have no food in your body.

They pump your stomach bc, anesthesia paralyzes you’re entire body. Including your reflexes. There’s this muscle in the body, that’s sole purpose is to keep things in your stomach, and it relaxes when you each or drink something. Under anesthesia it relaxes(as all the muscles do)and any food in your stomach would leave your stomach, and would probably go into your lungs. Now normally when something besides air gets into your lungs, you start coughing a lot, to get it out. That’s a reflex, which you can’t do underneath anesthesia. So if they don’t, there’s a good chance you’ll suffocate. Edit: I’m honestly surprised with how many people didn’t know this. Glad I could help you all learn something.

yeah appendixes bassically serve to help regulate the mini-ecosystem inside your stomach and body and shit primarily that which helps with digestion, so that if anything happens where for whatever reason there's just a purge of all the bacteria in your stomach or some shit that causes that stuff not to be right, your appendix will replenish it and repair it. Unfortunately having a sack of just pure bacteria that's liable to explode inside of you isn't that great.

@Rose-ef2cm2 жыл бұрын
@@roboxgaming8355 True true but my distaste goes a bit farther than what one might think and lands in phobia territory. So by definition, it's irrational. If I vomit I just cry and try my best to not have a panic attack. Granted, it is getting better! I've been gradually practicing exposure therapy. Now its more of the build up/anticipation that makes me anxious as opposed to the vomiting itself, so if it's not very drawn out then it's mostly fine. Other people vomiting in front of me tends to affect me worse now because then I'm anxious for days wondering if they were contagious and I just have yet to be affected by it, etc etc. or if it's in movies. I can't explain why movies or tv shows get to me, because there's absolutely no risk there, but that's why phobias are defined as irrational. They're not supposed to make sense most of the time, or at the very least the level of anxiety one has is disproportional to the cause. Sorry for the ramble there, I just wanted to clarify and also offer an explanation since most people misunderstand what a phobia actually is unless I primitively explain. Human brains are funky.

Btw, just wanted to note :) The reason why you need to have an empty stomach to undergo surgery is simply so that your food won't come up while you are laying there and enter your airways. Basically, breathe in your vomit. The consequences could be quite bad if this happened, and it's due to the fact that while you are under anesthesia, you are sort of paralyzed, that includes your gag reflexes. Hope that was informative, you may find more information if you also looked it up, and do please correct me if I said something incorrect as I am no medical specialist! :)
@donotflee78742 жыл бұрын
Have had two heart surgeries, and this is totally correct. The anesthesia suppresses reflexes, and if your body decides to purge the contents of your stomach, you will drown in your own vomit. (I know because I had to have everything explained to me... sometimes in detail...)

They said my appendix was so inflamed, that if I waited a few minutes more, it would've ruptured.

Woah, that must have felt so bad ! So here, have some fun facts ! 1. The appendix is a little bag containing both your own gut flora (bacteria and fungi that helps you digest your food) and lots of immune cells. It's here to help you regenerate your gut flora if something wipes it out (such as an antibiotic or a bad diarrhea for example). It is a rather important organ that shouldn't get the hate it gets. I mean, you can get your eye infected too, so why not your appendix as well ? 2. Your stomach needs to be empty for surgery for your safety. Bowel movements can happen and you can still throw up when under anesthesia. So you need to avoid eating for like 8h before a surgery, or in case of an emergency surgery such as this case, to pump the stuff out of your stomach. But I guess you got the job done with both methods here.

The appendix is thought to contain “backup” gut flora to replenish the microbes in your intestinal tract after a “purge” like diarrhea or other nasty events. That little section keeps some of them hidden way during the event so they can repopulate afterward. A healthy gut flora is essential for proper health.

I got into the operation room, they put me on the bed (they moved me from another bed) and then they put on that good anesthesia. (I KEPT THE IV ON WHILE I WAS ON THE WAY TO THE SECOND HOSPITAL-) and then they put on a laughing gas. it kicked in and I was like woahhhh and I fell asleep and woke up and got something to eat. then 2 days later here I am, recovering from the incisions. thank you for saving my life.

I got my appendix removed when I was 9 years old. I still remember waking up that day to a hellish stomach ache. My older sister, who thought I was bluffing so I don't have to go to school, told me before leaving to go to work "You better go to school or else!" Needless to say, after she left, I was unable to even get up from the couch I was lying on and felt bad for being in pain. My mom came home from work early in the morning and when she saw me and asked what was up immediately took me to the doctor who then told us after a quick inspection we immediately have to get to a hospital. I got an ultrasonic examination and the nurse called my appendix "a model" because it really wanted to show off that it was about to explode. They immediately took me to the operation room. Needless to say, this is my story of how I would have probably literally died if I went to school. :D But I didn't! So... moral of the story...skip school if you literally feel like you might die? 🤔

Apparently there is a chance that it can be non-fatal. My friend's mother had appendicitis at one point, but ended up not dying from it. She one day had to go to the doctor and they looked at her and was surprised to see scar tissue around the appendix. She remembered a while ago (ranging from a few months to about a year) that she had this horrible pain in her body, but thought it was part of her period. So she kinda shrugged it off. When she learned about it from thw doctor she was fine with them taking it out.
@misatange3 жыл бұрын
I think this is why (some) people suggest putting pressure on the area. Learned it from Tumblr so YMMV and ask your doctor: but if there's a lot of pain after putting a lot of pressure on the crotch (?) region, it's appendicitis, not an unusually painful cramp.

Yes, it doesn't have to be fatal, but often is and because the loss of function of the appendix (important for immune fuction and bowel-flora or bacteria) isn't as bad as death it's mostly safer to just take it out if it's alrrady infected. It probably bursts if the infection and resulting swelling etc. can't be contained and the really dangerous part is that the infection would then spread into the peritoneum (surrounds many organs in the abdomen) resulting in peritonitis, and could from there spread into the blood stream, causing sepsis (very dangerous, often fatal) and multiple organ failure. So maybe her body managed to contain the infection at some point after her appendix burst and it luckily didn't result in any serious symptoms. Hope this clears it up :)

It's so strange how appendicitis presents itself in different ways in different people. When I had appendicitis, all I felt was blinding, searing pain in my abdomen for 4 hours. No vomiting, diarrhea, none of that. I was in the marching band in college for a team that was almost always in the top 10, and we went to a top bowl game that year. I was so excited. And I was also 12 hours away from home... We got to go to Universal Studios for a rally the night I started feeling pain. Me and my three roommates stuck around one ride after finishing the rally for too long and had to run really fast to get back to the bus before they left us there. I felt a stitch in my side, and assumed it was just from running. It mostly went away after a while, and we ended up getting ice cream at the hotel. I went to sleep and woke up a couple hours later with this awful pain in my abdomen, right where I'd felt the "stitch" earlier. I went to the bathroom, where I read about appendicitis and started worrying that was what was going on. By the time I got out of the bathroom, maybe 10 minutes later, the pain was so bad that I came so close to passing out. My vision completely left me for a couple of seconds, and I could feel myself falling, but I somehow managed to keep myself standing. I told my roommates about what I was experiencing, and two of them just rolled over and put their pillows over their head. The third one told me to just try to go back to sleep. I sat in bed feeling miserable for a couple of hours and then told them again that something very bad was happening to my body, so the one that didn't ignore me took me downstairs to get some help. And this is where that ice cream from earlier comes in. See, we had to call the band director downstairs at 4 AM. Usually that kind of call means someone got caught being super drunk and is about to get kicked out of the band, so I was super nervous about it. And that nervousness meant that I was considering the possibility that all of the ice cream I ate could just mean that I was constipated or something. And what was worse, I was starting to feel better right after we called the director down. By the time she got downstairs I was almost feeling normal. She was super understanding though, and called a cab and went to the hospital with me. We waited there for a long time, with me still feeling completely normal, freaking out that I had just woken up the band director at 4 AM because I was constipated. Eventually I saw the doctor, and they suspected I was just dehydrated because we'd had practice in the maximum humidity tropical climate for 3 hours earlier that day. They gave me IV fluids, but wanted to check for appendicitis just to be sure. They just pumped me full of contrast material and gave me a ct scan. That contrast material felt really weird. Like I was suddenly coated in water. But it confirmed appendicitis. I called my parents around 7 AM, and they instantly started packing to get down to Orlando. I hadn't eaten in the past 8 hours, so they didn't pump my stomach. And then I got anesthetized and woke up 9 or 10 hours later with one of the TAs there just chilling by my bed. It has to be one of the strangest and most interesting things that's ever happened to me. Obviously I love telling the story. I'm sure no-one will read this, but it's still fun to type it out and reminisce. If someone does read this and has never experienced anything like this, trust what your body is telling you. Don't let people tell you to just ignore it and go back to bed. I was only a couple of hours away from my appendix rupturing by the time they got me into surgery. I should have gone sooner. If your body is telling you that you're in dire straights, get help. Don't just try to weather it out. Stand up for yourself. Anyways, that's my TED talk, I hope you've enjoyed it.

I'm still unsure if I have anything wrong with my appendix but I did have a moment a while ago where I woke up throwing up, horribly in pain, dizzy, lightheaded, fainting in-and-out. and I slept it off for 2 days and I've been " OK " since then with the usual searing pain in my side /stomach. I ended up Googling my side effects which I know you shouldn't do and it was worrying 😅 I ended up going to the doctor 2 weeks later for the pain and they didn't think it was Appendicitis but still gave me a recommendation sheet to get a scan since I really really did complain about the pain. It's a week later now and I have yet to go to the hospital cause I work everyday all day and they're closed on the weekends 🥲. I'm hoping to call Monday morning (it's Sunday now) to see if I have to make an appointment or just show up. Cause I'm kinda nervous and want to just get this cleared up. I hear stories where people just think it's a stomach but they're parents take them in and it's low and behold the apendex and they're lucky they caught it early. MINE was enflamed (getting ready to blow up), but was also located behind my bladder, which is how I discovered it: peeing and having such sharp, visceral internal pain that I sobbed for it to end. If you aspirate on your vomit, it can also lead to an insanely bad form of pneumonia because the lungs have no way to clear out decaying food particles

@@ianmckeever7389 Both suffocation and pneumonia are reasons why we pump stomachs. I will be a nurse relatively soon and I currently work in a hospital alongside the nurses. The only thing I thought was unusual about this story is that the tube was inserted through Sandwich's mouth and not his nose. We prefer to go through the nose.
@Arachnes_Corner2 жыл бұрын
Update: just looked into it. Apparently inserting the tube through the mouth or nose are usually both viable unless your nose is broken. Both have their drawbacks and benefits. I've only been taught to insert through the nose and only ever saw insertion through the nose.

I had to have my tonsils taken out when I was in middle school since they started to unnaturally swell, and I had to have a huge tube with a little camera on the end get stuck up my nose so they could see how inflamed my nasal passages and throat were. 1.) I sympathize with ice cream sandwich and his fear of tubes entering his orifices and 2.) it felt like a literal piece of spicy, stinging spaghetti was slithering around in my head. 1/10 would not recommend
