I don't remember there being things like that when I was a kid, or even really medals, but I remember getting ribbons at track and field--and no matter how you did you got a ribbon, but the distinction there was the ribbon said what place you got. So you'd get, like, a 6th place ribbon or a 13th place ribbon or what have you. So you still GOT a cool ribbon, and they were all different colours, but it was representative of what you accomplished.
