The guy has serious Andy Kaufman quality about him. It's hard to tell what's sarcasm, what he's making up on the spot, and what's sincere. He comes off as a guy who could be sincere for an entire conversation but manage to convince you otherwise. He's one of the few artists I could honestly call enigmatic because he's so meticulous ,and yet presents himself as almost shallow, that you can't tell if he's orchestrating the whole thing or not. He could be a fucking sociopath for all I know.

My fiancé is like this and it wasn’t until I got to know him really well that I could understand when he’s being serious or when he’s trolling. People like that can be polarizing but I think it’s hilarious (as long as they’re not just being a total dickhead all the time). There’s also a sort of “mystery” aspect about those kinds of people that makes me want to better understand the way they think

Artists have a hard time verbalising the creative mind it can manifest like Patton in this interview, which to some is simply hard to comprehend , they don't care if people understand them or not or how their behaviour appears to others since words and behaviours are excess creativity sometimes, which needs to be expelled from the mind/body ,that being said I heard he suffered sexual abuse at a young age too which can distort a personality somewhat. I know he had an obsession with fecal matter and defecating in public, and was uncomfortable about using a toilet, he would also play pranks by putting shit inside hair dryers in hotels, this obsession with feces is because of trauma during the developmental phase of childhood..I think his actual personality is what you see here, it's not fake, no doubt high emotional intelligence. The 'method acting' thing some people mention is also excess creative energy caused partly by boredom.

What everyone thought was new, wasn't,it had already been done. The record companies were looking for something "new" for the mainstream music fan .So not only did they have the music ,they had a whole marketing dream.A name,Grunge,a look,a scene. So take the copied music style into big dollar studios with big budgets & big name producers and the result sounded very polished & professional. The record co.'s made millions.Vedder & Cobain became gods. The kids lapped it up......

You are wrong Carter, music is more alive than ever. Anyone can compose really great music without having to count on other musicians, just with a regular PC, wihtout wasting time trying to deal with bands, with other peoples arguing about who would be leading the band, etc. Just look at the boom of the synths, retro electronic or jazz-fusion music this last 7-10 years. Just google it and you would get a lot of great music and musicians. Personally i will recommend you a couple of channels: Marcel The Drunkard, New Retro Wave. And please STOP saying music was better back then.

I think Mike Patton was just trying to amuse himself here. A guy I work with is good friends with him and he's told me that Mike gets unbelievably tired of interviews and talking about music very quickly, so I'd say the juvenile humor that he had here and pretty much all his interviews back in the earlier days was simply him trying to make the monotony of yet another interview with the same old boring questions entertaining for himself and perhaps the interviewers as well. She was asking good questions after she got used to his attitude. He's entitled to his attitude tho. He's the best front man I've seen since freddy

Great interview. Didn't imagine he would ever say anything that the interviewer would ask him to.

So many commentators on here who don’t understand sarcasm 😅 Mike is on a wind up here, he actually reminds me a bit of Jim Carey

GODFLESH! Mike Patton always knew his shit. :) Chick throws AiC and Springsteen and he goes with Godflesh and Melvins.

Sorry but Alice In Chains are fucking brilliant and underrated. They were arguably the best band to come out of the early 90's scene. They were nothing like the other bands

Annnnnnd neither was Godflesh or the Melvins. Tbh AiC is great but he's right in they are more of a spawn out of retrospective material as opposed to progressive musical output.

AiC is worlds better than the melvins and I like the melvins a lot. Godflesh, cool... really like street cleaner but that last album was a bit of a dud

Man he predicted the future of music. Nowadays you barely see give musicians, you only hear shit being created on computers.

He was right when he said computers will take music to a whole new level! They have done.

To think, that sandwich was quietly digesting inside mikes tummy while he was laying takes of “caffeine” and “everything’s ruined” - food of the gods! 👍

yeah that's the thing with Patton, you can rarely tell when he's joking or being serious. But he did say they were heavily influenced by Queen so he's likely being sarcastic. Also I didn't know the other members of FNM were Soundgarden fans.
