The volcano threatening Grindavík and Blue Lagoon isn’t Fagradalsfjall, it’s actually the Reykjanes volcano
@michaeldeierhoi4096
@michaeldeierhoi4096 5 ай бұрын
You are correct that it isn't the Fagradalsfyll area being affected here, which is to the east of this region. But it is also not the Reykjanes 'volcano' either imo after watching videos on this subject for weeks. This magma intrusion is in the Svartsengi volcanic field. There is no particular volcano associated with this magma intrusion which should be obvious given how much it has been moving around. The Reykjanes volcanic field is further to the west of where the uplift and earthquakes are occuring.

"we've built a wall of rocks to stop the river of liquid rocks" … almost a good idea
@michaeldeierhoi4096
@michaeldeierhoi4096 5 ай бұрын
In the first place a lava flow is hardly a river of rocks when the whole lava flow is molten rock! And second it isn't about stopping a river of rocks, but rather to divert that lava flow which has been done before. In a barrier created against a lava flow in the Fagradalsfyll eruption in 2021'helped to slow a lava flow.
@jaewok5G
@jaewok5G 5 ай бұрын
@michaeldeierhoi4096 I did say 'river of _liquid_ rocks' . the '21 eruption was some distance away, but this effusion is likely to be close to if not right in town. there's too much variables but the barriers did so little to help it could be argued to be a waste of resources unless they could be truly focused like a channel similar to the Los Angeles river giving the flow an obvious path of least resistance. for a barrier to have an effect it would have to withstand not only the heat but the momentum energy of the flow. imagine it as flow waters only much more dense, like a bulldozer pushes through but also heating more rock underneath it as it moves. if the barrier withstands the initial impact, the flow will stack up an 'lean' on it. the flow then might push it over or flow over the top or melt and incorporate it. to stop the flow, the mass of the barrier would have to draw enough heat from the mass of lava to bring the temperature down thousands of degrees. usually it takes canyon walls or oceans of water to do that after the feed of lava stops. this is how mountains and islands are created in a day, nature will not be denied by shifting around even a few thousand cubic meters of dirt. we are specks of dust, look at a satellite view and you can see the fissures and calderas but the entire urban developments are a hazy patch, what we do, geotectonics hardly notices.

@@michaeldeierhoi4096 before the recent volcanic activity, Iceland's last eruption was 800 years ago. every eruption is unique. I accept that someone knows more than I o about any subject, but I too have knowledge an experience that are unique to me. if you had understood my comment, it was regarding the _futility_ of resisting the power of a volcanic eruption. everyone has been evacuated and ha a chance to return for valuable items. there's now a geological crease through the town floating on magma. are sane people really going to rebuild right there even if the lava flow goes around their home? what I on't know about the specific geology of Iceland, I make up for in my experience with bureaucrats an they hate to be seen as doing nothing and so would rather be doing something useless to be perceived as leading. if they were really so insightful to volcanism, they would've learned to pointlessness of temporary burns to control lava from last time an started on more substantial 'lava runoff canals' between the town and the volcano. but even that wouldn't help because this seismic event is straight through the middle of town. the most effective course of action for anyone living on an active volcano is prayer, and I mean that unironically.

With volcanically active Iceland being so dependant upon Thermal Energy to drive their Electricity production it seems short-sighted of them to build the power plant where they did. It's very much like Japan, an historic target of Tsunamis, building a Nuclear Reactor very near and not far enough above the ocean. It seems to me Iceland's protective wall to divert lava flow would need to be a half-mile tall. But good luck to them, however they try to divert it.

We traveled around Iceland, enjoying stops in many cities - often visiting Grindavik. While the wind could be fierce at time making the chill factor a bit harsh, I enjoyed living there and have maintained a few Icelandic friendships. Unfortunately, the country is all volcano and some blow every year. I took my son back to Iceland after he graduated from college. The people were kind and pleasant and the country was pretty. And it was only in the last month that a magma intrusion appeared, but not near Grindavik at first. @michaeldeierhoi4096
@michaeldeierhoi4096 5 ай бұрын
@@reson8 There are vast quantities of basalt available in Iceland which is primarily the rock used to build barriers as they are doing around Blue Lagoon and the power plant. Basalt can withstand the heat from the lava because the lava would immediately start to cool when making contact. And a thick barrier of several meters would be effective against a lava flow primarily in diverting the flow. It depends of course which way a lava flow approaches a barrier. Even a direct impact by lava in a barrier would cause the lava to spread out laterally at first. At least slowing the lava flow down would allow authorities time to raise a barrier level. Iceland has more experience handling lava flows than just about any other country.

Almost impossible to stop a volcanic eruption. Hawaii already tried Bulldozing and bombing eruptions with no success. A nuclear bomb might possibly do something but would also make an area unlivable.
