Boots were part of her list, including winter ones. But she admitted that they are heavy. One thing I learned, is that if I really think those boots will be valuable, is to wear them on the flight. I plan a trip to Iceland for Sept. 2022, and I expect the same temperatures as we have in winter where I live. My winter boots are a must. Because they are heavy I'll wear them on the flight.

Instead of flip flops I would suggest some kind of water shoe which you can easily put on after soaking, but also wear in the hot pools if you don't like the feeling of the texture in places like Secret Lagoon, the hot springs river, or Myvatn hot springs for example. You can also wear them in the shower at campgrounds if you don't want to be barefoot.

I have pair of blue shoes from Five and Below. They are perfect when you want to walk on rocky lake bottom and want to avoid any sharp stones.

Hi Jeannie, I've been watching your channel for a while now and it contains some great advice for the newcomers to Iceland. That said, I think you have missed out on mentioning one of the must have pairs of footwear when visiting the country. I have extensively toured the country twice as well as being a seasoned World Wide traveler. My experience is this. Most places of accommodation including B&B, AirBnB will require you to remove your muddy/dirty outdoor shoes at the door and leave them in the foyer as not to dirty the inside of the accommodation. This is true of most Nordic countries. I think it's ESSENTIAL to pack a warm, snug pair of slipper. I have Suede/Sheepskin booties to put on upon entering someone else's establishment. There are warm, crush down for ease of packing and weigh nothing. Whilst you cold possibly get away with the flip flops you have advised, I think they won't be warm enough and can't really be worn with socks. So with the Icelandic "shoes at the door" culture you really need those slippers. Some hostels and accommodation is warm, however my experience is that most will be slightly chilly most of the time. Maybe this is something you can revisit and recommend as they will be needed by most people staying at places other than a City Hotel. www.ciora.co.uk/collections/men

I was waiting for the sandals! I went in May 2018 and the public pools and hot springs are a favorite memory! Went to one every single day after we went on a whim the first night and realized how amazing they were.

We spent more time in the countryside hiking than in the city. Our hiking boots were waterproof and saved our feet from discomfort. All your suggestions are great. I would love to go back and try the crampons!

Hi, Make sure you have a variety if good socks to go with the shoes as the temperatures change and sometimes you may need to change the weight of the socks during the day. You can gets 40°F in July. We were blessed with 5 days in Iceland and no rain but one day the wind could knock you over. Safe travels!

Those are great tips. I went to Iceland in December. I had my timberland boots which are waterproof and it was perfect for most of the hikes we did. But I also had my snow boot which helped a lot when we were hunting the northern lights. I had to cancel my summer trip due to COVID but I'm looking forward to rescheduling for next year!

Great advice. On our trip to Iceland in winter, we went on a guided trip that provided us crampons. We were so impressed and grateful! On another topic, I'd love to hear what you have to say in an episode about living during the times when daylight hours are very short. How do you keep from going crazy?!

Another good and useful video, personally I love my hiking boots and would wear them all the time if I could! To answer your question when we do get to Iceland I will be coming with my defender and as a geologist I will be exploring the interior but it would be wrong not to visit the capital and some of the other tourist bits. Just need to plan and save up for the ferry and long drive from the UK :)

As we're (my parents and I) going in October some sturdy boots will suffice (14 days roundtrip of course. hunting the northern lights and waterfalls). Thought of sending this to the old folks, but then my mum probably will pack 10 pairs of shoes. Btw, an idea for a vid: Listing the sights of Iceland from most to least accessible - to avoid reading about some spectacular sight and then finding out it takes 5 hrs to get there or that it's so hard to reach you'll need special equipment...

I will be in Icland in first week of September ..I ordered a pair of Baffin Chloe boots for comfort( I have a high arch and plantar issues..these are soft and cushy without breaking them in...however after watching your video I'm wondering if they may be too much boot...we won't be doing any extensive hiking just walking from car to various sights ..Do you suggest a lower boot or shoe that may be better or are these ok..I don't want to be burdened by my shoes but want a good warm ,waterproof comfy pair.. lol thanks Rebecca

I think with your advice I will take the hiking boot, do you have any recommendations on good outer layer socks?
@IcelandwithaView

Hi Rhett! What do you mean by "outer layer socks"??? I can't imagine that you'll want to wear socks over your boots as an outer layer! Regardless, merino wool socks are always a good choice to keep your feet warm.

I plan on doing both the countryside and Reykjavik. I'm coming in the beginning of September. Do I need crampons? I have Yak Trax, are those good enough? Can't wait for my trip. I'll be buying the Bundle A on your site and driving the ring road, clockwise, alone. Plan on visiting Reykjavik for 3 days at the end, while stopping off at Akureryi, Myvatn, Vik, Hofn and one more town, don't remember the name. LOL It has the little church with the rainbow sidewalk. Can't wait. Hope to see you in Reykjavik.

@@jw5275 👍 I live near Toronto. What I’m used to for winter is probably the same for you. What's the chance you get ticketed for parking overnight at a grocery store that is in a little town? I will not be driving a camper, just a compact car. Is the no offroad parking strictly enforced? Lets say, you're in the sparsely populated Westfjords, middle of nowhere, and you just find some flat ground next to the main highway that would be fairly easy to accelerate on to "merge" back onto the highway. Do people actually care? Are there police cars that patrol along the ring road every night even in the offseason, ie. Sept or Oct?
