In summer a lot of times the popular sites are not crowded at all around midnight. I've seen people flying their drone when almost no-one is around. I personally have no objection to that. It's ridiculous to object when (and I stress this point) they're NO crowds/ birds around.

All great points and tips. I strive to be a responsible pilot, and got some really good highlands drone video on my (fourth) trip to Iceland in July/August.

I see so much drone footage of iceland. I was so tempted to get one for my visit last july. I didn't get one early enough to learn before my trip so i didn't get one. I was shocked that 90% of the locations i had thought about using one had no drone signs. So glad i had not spent the money. Yet i always saw someone flying one in a restricted location. However, for less tgsn a decent drone, i took a helicopter tour of the volcano. Better money spent than the day i would have lost hiking to the volcano

One of the great tourist attractions of Iceland are its wonderful and amazing landscapes. Drones have collaborated a lot in this, whether by amateurs or professionals making videos and uploading them to platforms such as KZbin. Now, putting aside the adverse climate of Iceland, greatly limiting the areas to fly a drone in really impressive areas would be counterproductive. Everyone wants a piece of the pie. If part of that pie is not shared with the drone pilots (because everyone who goes to Iceland wants the best photos and videos) then a large part of the tourism will not go due to so many limitations and restrictions. The solution is easy, enable zones (within important areas) or enable a certain time, to be able to fly a drone. Logically with all the papers in order (pilot license, drone serial number and category and civil liability insurance).

I took my drone to Iceland in late May/early June. There were many days I couldn't fly due to weather and the wind is fierce at times. The Iceland drone authority was phenomenal. I was concerned because my drone was not yet registered in Europe and I had not passed the pilot's test. Things were a bit confusing on the website and I emailed the aviation authority with questions and received an answer in less than a day! We emailed back and forth several times about flight areas, regulations, etc. They were simply great. At the time I flew Iceland did not yet require registration and pilot's license but were working towards adopting the EU drone rules. (I'm US). I would check to see if this has become the rule for Iceland as they expected it to put these rules in place over the summer. We also bought Jeannie's Ring Road guide. It was excellent, but the map was the best part. Put it on your google maps and you know where everything is, what's coming up, etc. The map alone is worth the cost.

My brand new DJI avata is still in Iceland, and I’m back home in the states. The wind is no joke, and get care refresh in case your drone finds its way into a rock jetty like mine did.

Drones are relatively quite once they are up in the air. So as long as conditions seem good, a good area to take off/land, have a good wind resistant drone like the dji air 3, then you should be fine. That's what im gonna do.

What timing! We just got back from our Iceland trip about a little over a week ago. I brought my drone and saw at least 2 waterfalls right near the entrance saying no drones. I did however see at least 2 drones in 4 of the locations that had signs saying NO DRONES. But I get it, it'll at least deter some people, me being 1 of those people that respects stuff like that. Maybe they had permits? Who am I to say. But I had my dji mini so it's less than the 250g, but I respect not annoying people and all you mentioned. We had some great weather about 4/5 days...unfortunately our flight day out...we had what we were told a "yellow warning" I believe and our flight got cancelled...a lot of frustrations, disappointment, anger, etc came with that. I was wondering how you feel about IcelandAir? We have a good to bad experience with them now (I understand this could be a unfair question since they might be the main/only airline useable) Thanks!
@o.aldenproductions.9858 Жыл бұрын
If bad weather and its consequences makes you angry...you might consider staying away from Iceland 😆
@Minthismoment Жыл бұрын
The bad weather we understood but the being angry part was due to IcelandAir. The short version is they did their passengers wrong when they sent 250 people to a hotel for the night when they told the hotel 200. The long version is, we were delayed twice due to "technical issues". The second delay we were sent to on the shuttle to the plane. We all sat/stood on the shuttle at the bottom of the stairs for what seemed like an hour with no update. Then the shuttle just returned us back to the airport without reason. Unloaded us. We had to ask around what's going on and we found out that we would have to wait to hear an update over the intercoms. That's when we found out about the flight being canceled due to weather. We all scrambled to find out where to go to get our hotel for the night. Found that by following each other. 2-3 busses full of people were sent to a hotel. Everyone waited in line to get a room. By the time the last I'd assume 50 or so of us were left. The hotel manager told us they were out of rooms. The hotel manager, Bo (very great guy btw, the shining star of this story) called and talked to the supervisor of IcelandAir because none of us could get through due to the very long wait times and he had a more direct line. He told us that the supervisor messed up, they told the hotel management they needed 200 rooms when they sent 250. They told the hotel manager not to say anything and let us basically fend for ourselves. They would not be sending another bus to pick us up to go to another hotel. This was after the supervisor told the hotel manager not to tell us any of this, but the manager felt that he needed to tell us the truth cuz we deserved that. After all this, a couple of people were lucky enough to find rooms elsewhere but I guess due to business hours and such. Hotels ran out of rooms, taxis/busses were no longer available. So, thanks to Bo again. He gave some of us random places to crash for the night. A gymnasium for a family, a conference room for another, and my group of 6. We got a cinema room filled with chairs stuck into the floor style. But we were fortunate to find 4 mattresses on the stage that were in almost brand new condition that we were all too eager to take advantage of. Bo got us sheets, pillows, and blankets. We even gave 1 of the mattresses to a couple sleeping out in the hallway cuz at this point we were trying to just survive the night. So, my issue isn't really with the weather or being angry. My issue is more with IcelandAir and what they did wrong which is why I asked the question about how Jeannie felt about IcelandAir. Not the weather.

Thanks for the video. Are there any maps with no fly zones? It is hard to no brake the rules without the chance of knowing wehere it is not allowed to fly a drone. Also I‘ve heared that at some places it is now allowed to fly at certain times (even in a national park).

It's always my recommendation to check with the Icelandic Transport Authority for up-to-date guidelines. This way you are assured the best information. 🙂

@@IcelandwithaView they don‘t give any information related to my question. At least i dont find any on their drone category. They refer to the Environmental Agency for protected areas or the national Parks. But there is also no map with the no fly zones.

I thought my drone would be disruptive, but I saw a guy with a bigger drone and literally couldn't see or hear it once it was 40-50ft in the air Birds were bigger and louder than his drone For reference I have the DJI mini 3. 3 seconds after take off, you can see or hear it
@live_emulator3 ай бұрын
Thats what i'm thinking. You'll most likely fly the drone high in the air where you cant see or hear them. Most people won't be able to notice a difference.
