I have been watching for a while off and on about 3 years. It was always my husbands dream to homestead we did a little. He had an entrepreneurial heart, more than anyone I have ever known. He passed away in dec 2019 with pancreatic cancer, so he did not get to see this dream out however near the end he LOVED watching your videos. I just watched the one where you all were discussing and answering questions about your finances and really personal questions ... I just wanted to tell you I am praying God’s blessing for you and your family pressed down shaken together and overflowing. Keep up the hard work and as I learn and try to adjust to a new normal I will continue watching and learning, Thank you for what you do!!

I am so sorry to hear about your husband. I lost mine a year ago today to colon cancer. We also did a little homesteading, wanted to move but then... . Cancer. I'm happy that I got a victory garden planted and kept most of his trees alive they he planted last year in our food forest. Also just got rabbits and meat birds. It's a lot of work to do alone (plus 5 kids) but I know he'd be pleased.

And the finishing starts. Sometimes I think there is so much more work at this stage, but I also think it comes with much more satisfaction. So glad your grass is coming in now too. I can totally picture that property as it will be in a couple of years. Y'all are doing a great job at being patient! Hang in there! It really is coming together. Feels like forever, but it will so be worth it. You've worked so hard for this; sacrificed so much for this; and endured/persevered super well for all of this and it is coming together. I'm so excited for y'all!

My Grandma's house was 100% chicken wire with stucco. It was close to 200 years old. No leaks. You just need to maintain it and keep it painted. She lives in southern Missouri with no a/c, lots of heat and humidity and wood stove heat only for most of the winter. Good quality stucco applied correctly is a great choice.

If you are in a humid climate you should really be wary of James Hardi's products which are paper based and disintegrate in moisture. These include their tile backerboard, Hardiplank siding, Hardi panel, etc. Just a word to the wise... Anything that snow lays against, rain gets on, water etc. will not hold up. They also have a history of not honoring their stated warranty.

Work hard for 20 minutes and your sweating your shorts here in central Kentucky. I’ve been digging and chopping out a stump in my backyard 30 minutes at a time for the last week and a half. At 64 it’s a little harder than it was at 30. On a good note, Our spring was extended this year with some great weather !

I agree, it is hard work digging stumps. I like four or more feet of tree trunk left on for leverage. They are also easier if the trees die before they were cut down. Last week my sons and I ripped some dead trees out like grizzly bears. The biggest one was about 30 foot and I t was so weak it broke into 3 long pieces as it fell. I am only 48 but beginning to feel my age. I got to hand it to for doing that at 64.

Don't do stone around the entry door - it's something of a modern fad that won't look right on a modern mountain home. Only do stone (whether real or veneer) on supporting or foundation elements. Use only traditional siding above that foundation line. I know I'm just a random internet commenter, but trust me on this. You guys are doing a great job.

We just built our house after losing our old farm house (110 years old) to hurricane Harvey. My builder (45 years experience) told me, never use stucco in a high humidity area. Moisture will seep in and rust the metal grid and then start mold growing in the walls. I do live near the Gulf Coast and our RH stays between 75-100% most every day.

Consider tying the porch into the house with smooth steel dowel rods instead of rebar, with some foam between the fresh and existing concrete. May want to avoid bonding existing concrete to new concrete with rebar because the slabs will try to move independently and crack due to the rebar. Anyway bounce it off some concrete people. I am no expert, just parroting a common recommendation I have seen. House looks great! ICF FTW
@michiganengineer8621

I'm a little surprised the concrete contractor didn't put rebar stubs coming out of the ICF above the ledge to tie the rebar for the porches to.
@korimako
@korimako 4 жыл бұрын
I'm with swedish - I'd be reluctant thing the porches to the house with rebar. If there is any independent movement of either house or porch, one or the other will give way. The dowel system allows for movement and avoid damage to the house.

How is the fiber glass mesh attached to the foam? Will water be permanently be diverted away from the wall? Will it last the lifetime of the building? Removing excess concrete when it was placed seems more efficient than trying to fix it after it is set. Very interesting, but very interesting can generate lots of questions. Thank You
@dougunderwood2313
@dougunderwood2313 3 жыл бұрын
The mesh is applied to the wall with the fake stucco mixture that they are applying to the wall. You can apply a thin swipe to the wall and then lay the mesh against it to hold it in place while applying a thicker coat. If done 100% correctly the fake stucco is supposed to be waterproof, but there have been thousands of fails throughout the industry over the years. When I worked in the field the EIFS was not recommended for below-grade use. Most of the fails were due to incorrect waterproofing around openings in the system such as doors, windows, and pipes.
