Outstanding singing by Thomas Quasthoff and orchestra particularly the oboe.

As an instrumentalist married to a singer, I've heard tons of vocalists and have some definite likes and dislikes. One of my wife's student's loaned her this CD. I had just come home and she said I had to listen to this. Now. Over and over. Had to immediately run out and buy it (takes a lot to get me to do something like that). I can't think of a more perfect combination of instrumental playing (Albrecht Mayer is like the voice of God on oboe), ensemble, and singing. Beauty incarnate. All of the sadness and hope in this world rolled into one piece of music. Others may have their favorite voice, but I just don't see how anyone could possibly have anything mediocre let alone bad to say about this. One of my 5 desert isle recordings!

Quastfoff's rendition is full of emotions. It comes from the depth of his soul. His own flow is magical! His timbre is velvet and his vibrato is subtle.

He's fabulous, especially in person. What a blessing this guy is. He appears somewhat irregularly but not infrequently in NY and I try not to miss a chance to hear his interpretations. He's even been at the Metropolitan Opera, if memory serve.

Simply wonderful singing. The "band" is b****y good, too. I have been attempting to sing this for 35 years as a professional. Ohne Erfolg, muss ich zugeben.

This aria belongs to Quasthoff himself. He's the incarnation of it. Who else could sing it that way ? NoOne. Remarkable. Beautiful.

Otros "propietarios" de esta aria son Fischer Dieskau, Hans Hotter y Benjamin Luxon, este último con una muy dramática y particular versión

One of the reasons that I admire & love listening to Quasthoff in Bach are the great tempi which move gracefully along without being rushed whatsoever. His instrument during his career was exceptionally beautiful & his musicianship of the highest order. The 2 other singers that match his accomplishment, IMO, are Hans Hotter & William Sharp. All three have a unique approach to this music & Sharp should be better known than he is.

haha! Bach is boring? He is a musical genius who could grasp the human soul. This piece involves many instruments and it's wonderful to hear them together. This is a sacred piece not opera. Hampson Tézier and Nucci are all opera singers and only sing secular songs sometimes.

Great! This is the only version that can approach to that of Hans Hotter.

Beautiful piece. I think King Crimson's "Starless" is inspired by this. The way the oboe accompanies the vocal part here is very similar to how the saxophone is treated in "Starless". I think the mood is quite similar as well.
@Generalbum15 жыл бұрын
Hey Ilbacioditosca, I haven't said this version is wrong or right. I just want to pinpoint the fact that being disabled helps getting the support from the media (same thing for the blind Italian tenor), and being German helps being described as a pure genius (by the Germans).

I think Quasthof MAKES a carrer because he has a wonderful voice, which permits him to sing everything he wants to, and that extraordinary good... if you din't like the way he sings, I could understand, that's Geschmacksache, but writing that his carrer is due to his disability, it's not fare and not responsible... i don't like 100% of the things Quasthoff has sung but i admire the voice, his incredible technique and the music he puts in everything he makes from bach to jazzy thingies...
@ilbacioditosca15 жыл бұрын
Quasthoff is supernormal voice, G1 to C5, inside of a to the Theater Colon in Buenos Aires with a superb acustic he sounded a big voice, anyway I heard him life in other rooms in the US and the effect is not the same. I am not German and I believe like Baremboim or Abbado he is a genius.

Roberto Alagna is not really french, I suppose, lives in London has a romanian wife. The music played in France or in the UK is not only coming from their national repertoire. Compare the programms from these two countries with those from Germany and you understand what means "open-minded".
@jhvorotin15 жыл бұрын
In der Tat, Gott sei dank. Quasthoff was refused a place at the Conservatory of Hannover BECAUSE he was disabled. and yes, every country does that. Take Alagna in France which worships him.

If you want to choose a great version of this aria than Quasthoff, choose Hans Hotter, Dieskau. YOU don´t like the version ok, but to say that this version is wrong proves YOU are wrong.

Pretty boring and Quasthoff doesn't help much. I don't see any reason to cry or is it because he is German and sings Bach ? Compare with Hampson, Ludovic Tézier, Leo Nucci, u.a.

Not bad but I do prefer the Italians (even Bocelli), they have more "flow", more instinct for singing...
