Excellent. I was telling a friend about the movie Solaris, and I couldn't find the right words to explain the theme music. A short google search turned this up and I was very pleased.

This jewel of Bach brings my highest emotions to the surface. Yes ... there are tears in my eyes now. This relatively simple organ peace is absolutely beautiful in its structure. I feel a deep love for Bach, always did. Words destroy what I want to express.

I think it is so beautiful because it encompasses so much. Some people have said this is sad piece. I disagree, although sadness is in it to be sure. But this sadness is enclosed embraced and transcended, and transformed into a whole different state of consciousness. This is something very few works of (very good) art do.

Technique is perfect. The registration is also good. I miss only a bit of deeper expressions of this religious piece. Ich rufe zu dir : this is a verse from a psalm. You can read psalms every day, meditate them and imagine, how the psalmists express their doubt, hope and faith. This is a psalm choral, which springs from the deepest religious feelings.

Actually, the text is a 16th century prayer: I call on thee, Lord Jesus Christ, I have none other help but thee. My heart is never set at rest till thy sweet word have comforted me. And steadfast faith grant me therefore, to hold by thy word evermore, above all thing, never resisting but to increase in faith more and more. Miles Coverdale (1487-1568)

Back (I should say Bach...) on your version of this wondefull piece. I maintain that the main line, the soprano, is a bit loud (perhaps because of the sound recording through a camcoder). Thank you very much. Perhaps it is a bit of misunderstanding between us. I mean under the name of psalm choral a choral text, which is written under influences of a certain gentre of psalms. I am glad to know that once certain stupid and dumbminded films have been forgotten, the genius of J.S. Bach will live on. This piece, of which none of you have any clue what it means nor what it represents, is a musical masterpiece that will outlive us all - even Miley Cyrus.
@s3rcan12310 жыл бұрын
I agree with the fact that J.S. Bach is a mastermind of music but I can't agree with your opinion on "dumbminded films". Lars Von Trier is a great director and this music is used by Andrei Tarkovsky in his Solyaris. Please be respectful to the work of art that is made by great directors.

I mean, I'll agree both Lars Von Trier and Tarkovsky are excellent directors, but both Solarys and Nymphomaniac are the bottom of the barrel in their filmography. The former tries way too hard to be literary in its writing rather than visually poetic which results in a nonsensical and obnoxiously anti-positivist narrative and the latter is just a pointless erotic drama.
@TheJrhc6 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry to contradict you: Tarkovsky film «Solaris» is a master's piece and his introduction with Bach «Ich ruf' zu Dir Herr Jesu Christ» a wonderful choice. Perhaps you confound with that American pseudo version.
@gedeonburnemauve398011 жыл бұрын

wcbroccoli, I think you miss the point. Yes, Bach composed this piece for a specific purpose, but that does not mean that we can not experience an emotional response. What a dull and impoverished musical life it would be to respond to music at an intellectual level only. Furthermore, how can you deny the sorrowful nature of the piece. "Ich ruf zu dir" means "I call to thee." Even the words express desperation and the hope of consolation through Christ. Bach is over your head.
