FM Melekhina on Capablanca's Masterpieces
In the new Master Method course, the FM Alisa Melekhina goes through very important training methods and practical advices that every chessplayer should know.
But, before that, she explores the different chess styles studying the chess classics.
In this FREE PREVIEW of the Melekhina Method, Alisa analyses Capablanca's style with two of his best games.
The first one is Melekhina's favorite chessgame: the victory over Winter.
In this brilliant game, Capablanca first provoke Winter to play a good-looking move which allowed Black to imprison White's bishop. After that, Black played on the other side of the board, obtaining a crushing victory with practically a piece up.
Can you find the critical Black continuation in the next diagram? (Solution at the end)
As she explains, this technique is very important to know to every chessplayer. And it's one of the trademarks of Capablanca's play.
The second game is a less known jewel where Capablanca shows his class to reach a better ending and exploit every weakness in Black's position. How he masterfully exchanges every piece except his rooks clearly shows his expert positional touch!
One of the most remarkable moments of this game can be seen on the diagram of the left.
Here Black is intending ...a5, with counterplay on the queenside. So, "Capa" played 30.a4! first and followed, after a few moves, with 33.a5. With this powerful advance, he not only anticipated Black's intentions, but he also fixed the a6-pawn, which later on decided the game!
With this excellent Melekhina's course, it's difficult not to learn!
If you want a comprehensive course on classical chess AND practical chess training that only masters know (that's the reason they are masters!), then this Master Method is for you.

Thank you for presenting this game. Capablanca is my favorite chess player who makes everything look so easy. i wouldn't if you were to present more of his games. Also, in studying his games and reviewing his notes and variations i also realized that labeling him a purely positional player is misleading since he was a supreme master of tactics. i think that what makes him appear to be a positional player was his extreme reluctance to enter into complications where he he was not absolutely sure what the results of the tactics were going to be. Since his plans were actually so simple and logical i suppose that any average chess player of average intelligence could play like he did if they could calculate tactics as precisely as he was able to, almost effortlessly, which was never a strong point for me. More please. And i hope never to meet you over the board.

No doubt Capablanca had many qualities, not only strategy and finals, and studying his games is very good to improve as a player.

Good point about this game being purely human chess. No computers.

Nice video..thanks. So you have gone full circle from solid positional play through tactical attacking play and back! IMHO, the best way to know any opening, is to play it with both colours, which really helps you know the opening and general chess understanding more deeply -(cf Fischer & the Sicilian). Happy chess play, best wishes :-)

I agree with you about openings. If you know how to play it with both colors you'll understand all the plans and it will be very helpful for your games. It's like if you also already know your oponent's plans!

This course is good for either beginners or intermediate players. I think an advance player, especially one that has already seen this game, needs more insight to get the most value out of the course. That said, Melekhina does a wonderful job with the content she offers.
