Checkmating the King in the Center with GM Susan Polgar
If there is one thing that every chessplayer loves it is to attack the opponent's king. Throw our pieces forward, sacrifice one or two to destroy the defense and deliver a beautiful checkmate. The happiest memories we can have!
But while it's very easy to say, it's very difficult to do it right.
In this free preview of her Polgar Method Series, GM Susan Polgar, former World Champion, discloses the best ways to attack the enemy king in the center.
In her first example, Susan uses one of her own games to illustrate the art of attack, including the critical ideas of which pieces not to exchange and how to prevent your opponent from castling.
The second game is more complex, a faultless display where she destroys GM Pia Cramling, one of the best female players of the last 3 decades (only a few weeks earlier she was fighting in the World Championship and doing very well!).King in the center
In my view, one of the most remarkable moments appears after the position in the diagram on the right.
Here, Black's king is stuck in the center, desperately trying to castle kingside, and it looks very difficult to prevent that.
But Susan simply played 26.Rfe1!, centralizing the rook. Now, Black's king cannot escape! Can you see why? (The answer to this puzzle is at the end of the post).

Answer to the problem: After 26.Rfe1! 0-0?, White wins with 27.f6!! Bxf6 28.Bxe7 Bxe7 29.Qe4, threatening 30.Qxh7# and 30.Qxe7, so White is winning a bishop. 27...gxf6 isn't good either: 28.Bxe7 Qxe7 29.Qg4+ Kh8 30.Qf5 gives mate on h7.
