When I noticed that the shinigami including ichigo keep on relying their bankai, they forget to hone their skills with shikai. This is why aizen, kenpachi, yamamoto and shunsui are goats. They beat such strong enemies without needing bankai except for death and life situation(except aizen)

You're also forgetting that they're fighting Espada. So using bankai off the bat makes sense

Grimmjow in base form is beating bankai ichigo. Arrancar beating Toshiro without restrictors. See, if you hone your shikai and increase your spiritual pressure to the level of max power of bankai, the shinigami will be damn strong. Imagine kenpachi using unreleased zanpakuto and yet destroying espada 0. His shikai will be on aizen transcendent level and bankai will be in god form level of aizen

It's so crazy in hindsight. Because Ichigo's hollow side was also the true Zangetsu, anytime he was popping up to help and Ichigo would reject him, he was rejecting the power he was literally making use of and thereby getting a huge debuff in the moment.
