Helps that he joined the Mariners at the right time. The year he debuted, they broke the record for wins in a season.🤷♂️ But I agree. I used to idolize him as a kid in the early 2000’s.

about his throws, it's not only how stupid strong his arm is, it's how precise and fluid he does it. just grab, throw, out. always amazed me how much power he could generate despite not being nearly as big as your traditional outfielder, let alone how elite he was while doing it

Quite possibly, yes. He ended up with 3,089 hits in 19 seasons, and Pete Rose had 4,256 in 24 seasons. So in those 5 extra years he would have needed to average about 233 hits per year to get the extra 1,167 hits. In his first 10 seasons, Ichiro averaged about 230 hits per 162 games. So in conclusion, it definitely would've been possible!

He's without question the greatest 2-way player of this century. He's also the greatest defensive OFer in at least 70 years & ranks with Speaker & Ashburn all-time. It's the things he doesn't do (SO/GiDP/CS/Errors/missed games) that separate him from all other players as perhaps this century's greatest performer. Keep in mind he played his 1st youthful & athletic 7 full seasons in Japan where he was the country's best player.

@@annabellaroma9886 In fact, he does. The point that I was ineloquently trying to make was that when we talk about great defensive outfielders, I rarely, if ever, hear his name come up. It's usually guys w/ huge arms, and I'd argue that Ichiro's arm was as big as any of them. He also had an intangible skill of breaking down the angles in the outfield quite effortlessly. He really knew where to place himself so as to be in the best possible position to make a play.

Laser throws from the outfield are one of the few baseball plays that benefit from a wide angle view at normal speed. The replays are always slow motion and zoomed in. It’s hard to grasp how far and fast they are throwing. 0:40 is an example of a decent replay, you really grasp how insane the throw was
