Nigel, for all those “pesky” spruces I use an upright file folder organizer. Plenty of styles on Amazon. Just label each slot (post it note does fine). Easy access to the sprues.

Igor Sikorsky was an immigrant to the USA in 1919 and founded his company in 1923. A great pioneer and his pre-war flying boats are iconic. On his Wikipedia page there is a fabulous picture of a CH54 carrying a house - great diorama material!

another comment, the easiest way to tell the difference between the sticks is the cyclic stick (directional) usually has a curve to it while the collective (up and down) is straighter. Loving the video so far, keep up the great work.

Nigel, when it comes to painting, I am like you. I tend to build as much as possible prior to assembling everything. Another trick that I use is to add some Elmer's White Glue (used in craft industry for paper here in the U.S.) and cover the contact area on the part, paint it and then peel it off. This leaves a nice contact area for the part. A little time consuming but allows you to paint the major components.

Nigel, A minor suggestion for model builders who might be space-constrained, and / or not have a spare box into which to put all the sprues: Take a black Sharpie permanent marker and note on the outside of each box which sprues it contains, to reduce search time.

Great start to build Nigel. Quick aero review from a pilot. Looking down on main rotor, Skycrane rotor rotates CCW. Therefore nose will turn CW due to laws of motion. As I pull power(increase) collective to a hover, nose wants to go right and the pilot counteracts this by left anti-torque pedal. Left pedal nose left, right pedal nose right. The tail rotor blades change pitch/thrust on tail using the anti-torque pedals which allows pilot to move nose in desired direction. Some helos and most RC helos main rotor turn CW. The nose goes left when pulling power requiring right pedal. So much for muscle memory. Sorry for the long post. Glad you got a good report from Vet.

The cyclic is the "stick". It tilts the rotor disk fwd/aft and lft and rgt which results in the thrust of the rotor disk being directed in a specific way and the resulting action is the helicopter moves forward, left etc. The lever to the left of each pilot seat is the collective and, as the name suggests, changes the pitch of the rotor blades collectively. This results in more or less lift and the helicopter gains or loses altitude. The tail rotor counteracts the effects of the spinning main rotor. The "rudder pedals" change the pitch of the tail rotor blades and causes them to produce more or less lift and allow you to point the nose where you want it.

Dear Nigel, Correct! Collective- the uppy downy control. Cyclic- the moving aroundy control. Pedals control the tail rotor. Forgive my use of technical terms… Regards, Z

Helicopter pilots generally sit on the right as the cyclic goes in that hand, needs a strong control (and there's more right handed people in the world)

Sikorsky was Ukrainian born. He left Ukraine in 1919 and went to America. He pretty much invented the helicopter having decided at a very young age that DeVinci was right. He envisaged that the primary use for helicopters would be for search and rescue duties.

NIgel, Question about build sequence. I'd appreciate your perspective on building from the "inside" to the "outside", for example. I might have thought that putting the anti-torque pedals on before installing the little cooling fans might have made the made the installation of the pedals easier, as the fans wouldn't (possibly) be in the way. I know that, in this particular video, you were worried about breaking off fragile parts whilst fitting the various bulkhead pieces, but, absent that consideration it looks like making the job of fitting small parts onto larger sub-assemblies would, in general, be easier when there are fewer parts in the way.
@NigelsModellingBench Жыл бұрын
I guess you are correct Tron, however, my head is just not in it right now so am doing some silly things. The reason for leaving off the small parts before fitting major parts is so they don't get knocked off if any filling/sanding is required. In this case, I didn't need to fill anything, but I did do a lot of sanding.
@waynesaunders Жыл бұрын
wouldn't it be easier if u labelled each sprue sepratly then all u have to do is look at the label then u know witch is witch thats what i do just a thought nige
