Years ago, I played this game to the end. I was fortunate enough to find it for $20 at Target... I never got to see the ending. My ps2 crapped out at that moment... I just finally saw the ending, and I have to say that it's a spiritual experience, just how beautiful and worthwhile the wait was. Ico is without a doubt a game that should be remembered forever, and put into some kind of PS3 or PS4 download program. Like Okami, this is a timeless masterpiece.

You know, I do remember the creator saying he interpreted the game ending in his own way, much like he wanted everyone who played it to interpret it in their own way. So here is what I think could've been possible. All of the children's souls gave what was left of themselves to Yorda (whose body was perhaps too weak and useless Plus stone at that point). I think every time she activated those statues with the electricity thing, (1:26)she was giving away some of her energy or soul.

If u translate the symbols directly it will spell "arn oys". since it is hinted that there will be several missing vowels, and the word will be backwards, "syo nra". My Best guess is "Sayo Nara", japanese for Farewell source:ico wiki

So when the castle finally collapsed, those statues were destroyed, and the parts of herself that she gave away returned to her, and restored her. Not to mention, the lovely little watermelon scene that was placed at the end. It just seems Right that their story would have a happy ending since Wander didn't and Mono's was kind of left hanging. The chain of sadness that started with Wander ends with Ico....and Yorda...eating watermelon. Till the next game folks!

Ueda wants players to interpret the ending/story for themselves and that there is no real cannon. Or at least that's what he said.

Actually, in the European version of the game you get a translation of what Yorda and the Queen say if you play through the game a second time (using the save game you get after finishing the game once, this is not in the American version). We also get a second ending called the watermelon ending (you can watch it here on youtbe) and another secret weapon (a lightsaber). And to top it of, the box art for the European version is way cooler (inspired by the works of Giorgio de Chirico).

@BrandNewSongz Absolutely the best games. I beat ICO in about two days, and at first I thought it ended at Yorda sending Ico out on the boat and I was so upset because I was like "You spend the whole game trying to save her and then we fail! What?" Then when you find her I got so happy. Lol.

@RedasFIRE417 well Wander is the first one. he gained the curse from dormin and his coming generations gain the same horns/curse. Something about the shaman saying Wander in some generation or another must do something to break the curse even if it takes a thousand years, and Ico being the newest one from hundreds breaks the curse (in the literal sense: he breaks his horns off).

@loser9ifcation Actually, that could have all been a dream. With Yorda in what appears to be a permanent shadow state, and Ico possibly being dead... They could have both died (Ico on the boat and Yorda in the sinking castle) and we would never even know.

@TheInunah Lemme add onto this. Yorda's freed from stone, but at what cost? It's not clear if Ico's even ALIVE after the final battle, but Yorda still puts him on that boat and sends him off, alone... I think she was determined to get him out of there, even if he were dead. And even in the final part of the ending, you could never be sure if Ico and Yorda had lived or died.

This game's ending is beautiful. It was a really big pay off for playing. I found the game for cheap. I still don't think it sells for much if you get it from a brick and mortar store(maybe online too). do a search on gamestop to see if a near one has a copy(I think I bought mines for 6-10 bucks).

There is a prequel to ICO. It's called Shadow of the Collosus. The game play is very different, but enjoyable. The artistic stylings and atmosphere is still intact. The makers of these two games is coming out with a third game called Guardian. From the looks of the trailer it will be a mix of the two previous game's gameplay. It's coming for the PS3.

Actually, there's nothing to suggest they coudln't be dead. As said by Ueda, the ending is meant to be viewed in an open ended way. Maybe they lived, maybe they died. It's all subjective, and part of what makes it a powerful ending, because it's ultimately up to us individually to figure out what may have become of our dear friends, Ico and Yorda.

Think about it. If it was actually a chain of children than how could that chain continue if all children with horns are indirectly killed. I personally think that the horned baby that shows up at the end of SotC either wrecked havoc as an adult or was an indication of the taint that some of the children would subsequently face.

You know, the whole Wander to Ico thing makes a little more sense. I don't think Ico was directly related to Wander at all. I think that Wander was the first Horned child, in a long line of cursed children of that village. Since the children were sent away as kids, they couldn't reproduce/continue the family line. THe curse continued each time with a new born, once a previous child died. So SOTC to Ico was probably 1000 years apart (if Ico was 10 yrs) and 10 yrs for all 99 children before him.

There's no such thing as a ridiculous ending to this story. It's left open the way it is for a reason, and that reason is open interpretation. The writers left it for us to decide what happened in our heads. Whether you want a happy ending, or see a sad one, that's what makes it so powerful. The ending is 100% personal because it's what You want to see of it. Theories and hypotheses are irrelevant here.

it was pretty and all but hell i hated it you cant ask me to like a place filled with deadly tramps and shadows that want to take yorda away also from an artistic point of view i must say it wasnt that impressive, it was big and the paths crossed over so many times it felt like a maze without being confusing which is good, however the excesive use of metal and things like pipelines gave it an industrial feel that was totally out of place
