Icom IC 703 portable part 4

This is a follow up of my Icom IC 703 portable Part 2 video. This time I was set up at a local park not far from my home.The band was in pretty good shape and I was able to work more stations. There are two nylon carry bags. The small bag had an ice pack and a can of soda in it. The larger bag can carry all of the equipment that is on the table. I got it at a flea market for $10 and it was new. It is nothing more than a bag to carry camera equipment but the rig fits with room to spare.

I did something like this with a cb radio and a 102 inch stainless steel whip on my mountain bike using a Yuasa NP 12-12 12ah battery. I made a couple skip shots on it from here in Philadelphia two a couple states to the south and west diresctions. It performed equally as good as a friends mobile set up in his car, after we both talked to the same station about 4-5 miles away. My next feat is to try and homebrew a beam, since money is tight.

I am sure you are going to enjoy your IC-703, I love mine. The antenna on the back of the rig is home brew. I put together a PDF explaining what and where you can get the material to make one. It's a fun and easy to make project. I also put together a table top portable antenna and I used it with my FT-897D. Look at my other videos and you'll see the newer model.

I had an FT 817 and loved it. But the 703 has DSP, Pre amp, memory keyer and a tuner. I don't need the tuner but it's there.

@redman840 This is a home brew vertical. It's a B&W coil but you can get any 35 micro henry coil to do the same job. Glad you enjoyed the video.

Those 703's are sweet rigs, I just ordered one myself. What's that antenna you're running off the back of the set, did you toss that together your self or is there a place I can pick one up? Looks like a nice compact antenna instead of lugging a buddipole around all the time. Thanks for sharing Barry!

Thanks for your comments. I can't wait for the snow to melt and the temp to go up so I can go portable again. Setting up portable is simple and fun. You will love it. I've worked into Europe with only 1/2 watt already. But.....with the band conditions not up to par yet, I am sticking with 5 watts. Barry

Are you saying you bought an IC703 for $200? If so, "What a great deal !" It's really a good radio. I bought mine new shortly after the Plus version came out and I still have it. I also have a KX3 and a KX2 but just can't part with the old 730+ since it's such a great little radio. Barry, KU3X/QRP
