You did an excellent job of going through the features of this radio. The only thing I didn't like was that it enticed me to spend money on this radio which I don't need since I have the IC-7300! I have the 7300 as my main rig and the IC-705 sits proudly next to it. Besides the VHF/UHF, it brings some other benefits to my shack and the combo is terrific. I can pick up and go any time I want with the 705 and I know that many of the fine-tuning elements are the same as with the 7300, so I recommend you spend the money!

Thank you, Pascal! I've been watching your videos since before I got licensed, and they're great! I'm a new US ham. I got my Technician rating March 1st of this year, and upgraded to General a couple of days ago. I bought the 705, before taking my General exam, as my first HF rig. I defied conventional wisdom and went QRP for my first HF rig because I see myself primarily as a portable operator: I can amp it as circumstances allow or dictate. The 705 won me over with its mastery of the digital modes and the ability to operate wirelessly (now please, Icom, update the firmware to give us a second COM port). 73, KN6NPZ San Jose, California

Pascal, that was a wonderful video. I learned some things about my new radio! I love the videos, thanks. I would whole heartedly recommend that you produce an alternate version in which you slow down a bit, and explain more of each feature for the new ham. The IC-705 is a great radio for the new ham . . . I'll be there will be many people who love the overview, but who are lost in every detail as you move so fast from one item to another. I have no complaints, it's a great review. I'm just saying that if you become the "go to" guy for ham videos that are useful AS WELL for the new ham, your numbers on KZbin should go up dramatically over time. Best wishes to you! W7DGJ

@@Laboenligne Hi Pascal, I don't mind longer video when I'm able to understand more. Here I had to rewind every few seconds to see or conceive whats happening. It's maybe more oriented for 705 owners or ICOM owners as I'm not so familiar with this UI to conceive so quickly what is happening. Maybe you covered this but if you see a line on the waterfall you don't have to tune to it you can push and hold were the line is and the radio will change frequency to where you push.

How often does ICOM issue new firmware with bug fixes and new features? Since it's an SDR radio they could do a lot of cool things that way, if their business model allowed it.

Great review very helpful. I cant get my windows 10 to recognise my ic705. I downloaded drivers from icom but still no luck any help please.

Hi Steve, sometimes Windows keeps multiple copies of a driver if you've tried different port. Unplug the IC-705 from the computer, go in device manager, in the "view" top menu (sorry mine is in French), there will be an option to show all hidden devices. Find the one about the IC-705, if you're not sure, resinstall the driver to see the name, delete them all, reboot and install the driver, don't connect the IC-705 to the computer until the driver is reinstalled, then it should work. I see this interface compared to the 7300 a lot. It is a bit different than the 7300, and a closer UI of the 9700. For example, the Memory/VFO look a little different, and on the 7300 they can't be pushed to change them. There is also no khz/m-ch on the 7300, so you can't run through them with the multi knob. The 705/9700 version is a bit better.

They're too different to compare, one is a QRP (IC-705, 10W max) with VHF and UHF, the other (IC-7300) is HF only but with 100Watts. 73

The Yeasu 817 is smaller and has two antenna ports. Icom just got lazy on that one.

Not that I'm in the market for a $1300 rig right now, but I never thought much about it actually. That is a big convenience of the 817/818 for me. I like having two seperate antenna ports and being able to change how they're assigned depending on how I'm operating. Good observation.

Yes, yours is smaller but heavier. Put it in a napsack and go for a hike. Yucks! Sore back! Everything about the design of the 705 makes sense. Yes, one Antenna input, but each one you add puts on additional heft. You can pick this thing up with one hand or carry it for hours on your back. I was working on my practice CW with the output turned down to 2% (2% of a total 5W as I was on battery) and I got a return call from three states away! Amazing rig.

All modes on all bands? I'm calling B.S. It doesn't do the 1.25 meter (220 MHz) band, it's receiver won't even receive that band. That's a deal breaker for me, regardless of the fact that there's not much on 1.25m! No reason they could not have included it.
