this is on my shortlist, i like the fact it has a screen, but I alway want to send the AIS via 0183 to a yakker so I can see the ais on Navionics. Will this work?

As it does output NMEA 0183 data sentences, we see no reason why it would not work.

does the unit have to have the included GPS antennae installed or can it use the one on the NMEA network?

It has to use the standard GPS antenna it comes with.

I have a sailboat with a AIS already onboard. It has the wrong name and is being replaced. I am buying this unit and just got a MMSI number. Do I program my MMSI and vessel name in this device myself or does the dealer do that?

You get one chance to put the vessels MMSI number into the transponder...so be careful when you do this...otherwise it will require a dealer reset.

You definitely need a VHF antenna to be able to transmit and receive, if you have no room for a 2nd antenna an active splitter can be used. But for best results it should have its own dedicated VHF antenna.

It is most likely a faulty GPS antenna. This should be tested and replaced if found to be faulty.

It will display UTC time so that it shows the same common time for everyone for distress situations.

how to turn off the tx off on your main display

It is possible to turn this off. Details are in the instruction manual. There is also the possibility of wiring up a toggle switch to the back of the set.
