Filmed last summer. In this video I break down the components of the Icon i150 gravity concentrator (or Centrifugal Concentrator) made by Sepro. I explain why and how it works so well in fine gold recovery. I also show each of the major components and explain what is does and how the over all machine works.

Hello Dan, how are you? I'm from Brazil, my name is Estevão, I live in Minas Gerais state, I watch your videos are very cool and I learn a lot, I try to copy as much as I can, in fact, you're a teacher in treating yourself of gold, and minerals, I can understand everything by translation. Hugs if you come here in Brazil, do not forget to stop by my city. Hugs, stay with God.

Your "funky bearing" is known in industry as a Rotary Union or Rotary Joint. That particular one is made by Deublin. Mechanically speaking, they are much more than just a bearing!

When we start mining in space, we will be using machines similar to this. Because this makes its own sort of gravity, it will still work even if actual gravity is different than Earth's gravity. That said, it probably will look completely different and might not even use water or any liquids, depending on what's available. We might have a centrifuge running on liquid methane, liquid ammonia, liquid carbon dioxide or sulfuric acid! Probably nitrogen gas to start with, though.

What is the source hertz of your generator versus the hertz on the VFD motor? That may explain your vibration, u.s.hertz is 60, whereas Europe has 50. Controller (variable frequency drive), motor, and the generator should have the same hertz. Also, have you considered the tailings as a possible mineral for gardening don't know what trace minerals still exist or the grit size but our red clay needs sand and lime just to grow some things. Maybe you could either sell or give away tailings as a soil amendment locally. Saving room in the pond.

Well, I was curious, how this machine works and therefore went somewhat deeper into physics. The Stokes Law helped a lot to understand whats happening inside the machine. But first some words to the electric motor. I assume it is a 3 phase asynchronous electic machine. The mentioning of 900 rpm seems to be the design standard value identifying it as a 4 pair coil engine, which means that at 45 Hz it rotates with N=45Hz*60s/4min=675rpm. Consequently feeding the stokes equation with that, the radial acceleration is 50 times the standard gravitational acceleration of roughly 10m/s^2 assuming a radius of 0.1 metre. This leads to a sedimentation speed of roughly 200 mm/s for gold particles of 0.01 mm diametre. Sand particles of 0.01 mm diametre with a density of 4 g/cm^3 is sedimenting at a speed of roughly 50 mm/s. Compared to a normal gravitational sluice the settling of gold is 50times faster which means that the capture length in a sluice is probably 50 times longer than in the Icon i150. Before I analysed whats happening in detail I suspected that probably higher density particles somehow win against lower density particles when accelerated in such a rotating vessel. However, this is not the case. The i150 is just pulling all particles much faster to the ground which tremendously accelerates the speed of sedimentation, which lets you capture also the smallest particles which might get lost in a 2 metre long sluice. Fine machine! Mr. Dan, you could teach your students Stokes Law using this example. What do you think? Just give me a note if you have questions.

@Dan Hurd Yes, I was thinking that before commenting above. I assume the side panels are removable to access all that stuff. That hollow shaft motor is somewhat a Novelty. Be way cheaper to rewind then replace that puppy. Keep shooting Grease in those bearing and they would be the last thing you need to worry about. All of those Rubber Parts was what I was thinking about. Do they seem to be wearing well ? Not something you can just buy off the shelf or fabricate so easy. Anyways it's a hell of a machine all said and done. I've seen a few DIY set up's some what like that but nothing quite that complex. Really enjoying your video's here. Man I need some Serious hill time my self here soon.

how does it go with sulphides? I mean some ore has 50 kg of sulphides per ton, and the sulphides with value of 400gpt. If it only holds a kilo or so you would have to empty it all the time or let the sulphides run over?
@Danhurd

Obviously depends on your material. If you are collecting the sulphides you have about a 10 minute cycle time. Luckily clean out is only 30 secs.

That's some great kit Dan. Bet it spin cycles your socks really well. I made a hydrocyclone to recover fine gold in the field. It works a treat. It's more a concentrator similar to a sluice however I can just keep feeding it without worrying that the gold might wash through. The gravel I run is mostly clay, iornstone and quartz sand with crazy amounts of black heavies... The cyclone does a great job of washing the clay, quartz and fine black sand out with a 95% plus capture of the fine gold. You can check out my video on the cyclone here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e6bafX-vZd6DprM

You should run some sand swept up from the side of the roadway through the Icon and see if it recovers any platinum burnt out of vehicle catalytic converters. The particles of platinum might be too small, but who knows 150g's might might make a difference. See the Cody's Lab video where Cody mines platinum off of the side of the highway for more info.

@Dan Hurd Can you ever crush it too much? Is that ever a concern? On the extreme end I bet 600 or 1000 or even greater mesh gold is going to want to flow with the water right through the device. I know gold can in theory be too fine even for a miller table to catch.
@dumpbear0
@dumpbear0 5 жыл бұрын
Dan Hurd,wazzzzzzzzz up? So I built an impact mill the year before last out of hardened steel plate rolled into a circle,punch plate part way up the side of drum so that only the finest material gets carried up and out,instead of a screen and the hardest chain I could find and it works like a champ. Turns rock to powder like flour. I haven't tried crushing wet though and I'm wondering what sort of consistency your crusher was putting out dry prior to its new purpose. If it was of flour like consistency then I would imagine it's the introduction of water that's preventing the ore from being completely pulverized. Maybe you have to crush dry on mass and then turn it into a slurry to run through the icon. Food for thought. Thanks for your clips they are always educational and I'm always interested in learning. Oh ya, I think you had an editing hiccup at the end of this one. When it fades to black keep watching for a bit and you will see what I'm talking about unless it was intentional 😉

was thinking the same. my impact takes a 6 inch rock to flour in less than a second, no need for heavy, noisy ball mill. shaker table works fine with this. still don't see the need for an ICON as it seems to be a waist of energy.. just my 2 cents
