I was fortunate enough to see Prince twice. One during the Purple Rain tour (with my sister and our best friend, who actually caught a rose from him during the song Purple Rain, she screamed with excitement all the way home)😆I was asked to write a concert review of the show for my schools newsletter… and then again many years later for the Musicology tour. No cameras were allowed but I attempted to get a few shots and security took my camera! I got it back after the show but the pics I took weren’t good 😕 Prince was likely an egotistical guy, but his talent and stage presence is undeniable! I’ll never get tired of any of his work; from first album to last. 💜

I was lucky to see the 3rd last concert he ever performed a week before his death . As a proof point to his talent he did the whole show 2 hours with just a piano. No drums , no bass, no back vocals and no guitar. Just him on a baby grand and believe it or not he rocked including using the audience clapping as the only percussion . Phenomenal! Last encore was Purple Rain with a wildly creatve piano solo where you were waiting for the widely lived guitar solo. So glad I was priviledged to see one of his very last performances.

One of the funny things about Kiss being a #1 song is that it kept another great 80's song from that spot. Manic Monday performed by The Bangles but written by Prince was held at #2 by Kiss. I'm sure it's happened before, but I wonder how many artists have kept their own songs from hitting #1.
@sirfriendzone1228 Жыл бұрын
Interestingly, none of the members of The Revolution were the best players he ever had at their instruments (to say that Sheila E was a MAJOR upgrade at set is an understatement and even she wasn't his best drummer), but they laid down the best groove of any group he had. Fun fact about Kiss... Sheila E released a live video of herself on tour for her 2nd album, Romance 1600. At the end of the show, Prince and Revolution show up to join her on stage for an extended version of Love Bizarre. Video ends. What's not shown is that after that, Prince and Revolution, along with Sheila E, performed the live debut of Kiss.

Hi Professor, At first I thought this was going to be the John Fogerty “The Old Man Down The Road” / Creedence Clearwater Revival “Run Through The Jungle” story. But this was another one of my favorite artists, and a story I had not heard or read before. Regarding “he didn’t do it alone,” Prince’s first four albums were all produced, arranged, composed and performed by him. He was not using his backup band on his own records yet. Well done, thanks and Happy Holidays.

I remember living in Kansas City in the early 1990’s. I picked up this girl I was seeing at the time, and I told her that the next song that would play on Q104 FM would be “Kiss” by Prince & the Revolution. Lo and behold, that song DID play next, and that gal was seriously impressed! What she didn’t know, but I did, was that Q104 was changing call letters. They would refer to the new station as KISS FM. They decided to change to the new station over a 24-hour period, where they only played “Kiss” repetitively during that time. I’ll never forget the look on her face! I did forget her name, though.

Back in 1994, some of the World Cup games were played here in Michigan at the Pontiac Silverdome. Brazil was one of the teams competing. I was singing karaoke regularly every Monday at a hotel bar. That Monday during the World Cup, a group of Brazil soccer fans showed up at the bar. One of them, a short, beautiful woman got up and sang "Kiss." She was phenomenal. Coincidentally, I was up right after her and sang "Purple Rain." After I finished, I went over to the group and told her how impressed I was with her version of the song. She said, "Thank you. I really liked the way you sang 'Purple Rain.'" After a while, the group left. About twenty minutes later, one of the guys I used to work with came running into the bar, super excited. He yelled, "Sheila E is in the hotel!" Yep. She was the person who sang "Kiss." And I didn't know.

Wow a Mazarati menntion. I love this band. I picked up the vinyl when it first came out and have played it ever since. Besides their version of Kiss, they have 100 mph, Stroke and a number of other great songs off that debut album. I saw Mazarati in concert twice during the summer of '86 an dthey killed it every time. I still remember the first show I saw where Brownmark played with them towards the end of the show, the stage riser gave way and Brownmark dropped through the hole but being as tall as he was it only came up to about his waist. Being the artist he is, Brownmark didn't stop playing he just stood there in that hole and continued to play for the rest of the song. Prince was a musical genius and I have always loved his music ever since I first heard Little Red Corvette. I then went out and accumulated his entire (released) catalog including a copy of the EP for Purple Rain done in purple vinyl. 1984-85 in the twin cities was such a great time for music.

Yes, i basically had to wait till the rest of the family went to sleep, sneak into the living room, plug a headphone in, and hand tune my UHF antenna to watch a snowy, mono sound, music video show. Sting and Prince outgrew the need for bandmates, but it's arguable whether their careers quite did. It's sort of like Paul Stanley & Gene Simmons. With the exception of the "God Gave Rock & Roll to You" cover, Kiss (as a band and a brand) never charted well with original tracks after Vinnie Vincent left (with Carr passing away a few years later. Through marketing, fame, and revenue, Simmons and Stanley continued to prosper, but they never had another hit single (or album). In terms of credits due, this is a big reason why I love Springsteen. He's great with the E Street Band, and apart. The work by "Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band" gets credited as such. Then when you listen to "Secret Garden" or "Devils and Dust", you know the songs are great but different from work with the E Street Band. Ask any average person born in the 80's or later if they've heard of "the Revolution" like they've heard of "the E Street Band".

It's impossible for me to disassociate "Kiss" from Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman, singing along with it on her headphones and saying to Richard Gere, "Don't you just love Prince?" Nobody else, including the late, great Prince himself, can erase that scene from my memory, and I've even covered this song live with a couple of different ensembles. I didn't know it when I was 4 years old and the *Purple Rain* soundtrack first came out, but the members of the Revolution definitely made their mark on me to almost the same degree as Prince himself. I've also come to recognize Lisa and Wendy as a kind of cultural template. When you listen to the songs that they performed on versus the ones that he did completely solo, you can tell how vital they had become to him then. Learning about the acrimony that developed between him and them two years later is precidented but still heartbreaking.

Prince was a genius. So I understand why he had so much trouble making music with other people. By himself he could make the sound in his head come to life. It's hard to describe what's in your head to others. Try it. It never goes well

Prince was so popular in 1984. Dire Straits put him in their smash hit Money for Nothing in 1985. lol (uncensored version)

One of my favorite old Late Night with David Letterman jokes had him placing a phone call to a theater. "Under the Cherry Moon will be playing at 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9. REFUNDS for Under the Cherry Moon will be at 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10."

3:49 Lisa joined in 1980 when Gayle left over the song "Head" which they had been doing during the "Prince" tour. Gayle did not want to sing a song about a blow job. Lisa was willing to! And! This led to a situation where some recording techs at Sunset Sound were warned not to work with him. But! Peggy McCreary was willing to take the job. She would be Prince's one of his main techs while at Sunset Sound. Peggy was the engineer for Prince's re-recordings for "Kiss."

Hey professor! Love the channel. This is my very first comment. Just wanted you to know that you pronounce the city: Edina ( twin cities suburb) wrong. Most people not from Minnesota pronounce it just like you did. It’s actually pronounced: E-DINE-A. I remember when Prince died and a local Minneapolis radio station played every Prince song and every song he had a writing credit for from A to Z. It took the station about 2 and 1/2 straight days to play that list. He was an amazing artist. Keep up the great work!

Prince never got the credit he deserved for his guitar playing. Look up videos of Prince performing by himself or with others with his guitar. Amazing.

Having a great song doesn't always meant that the artist had a great story behind it.
