Thank you for this. I've always dug Andre's talent as well as Prince. I used to think and wish they were secretly dating and that they were secretly Bi sexual and that they broke up cause one like women more. (My lil 2 cents lol). But none the less Andre is talented and seemed to dislike the fame that he would've had to endure. Prince took a while yo warm up to the fame as well it seemed. But again thanks for this "Prince Friend".

There was one thing I feel that set Prince apart from his earlier childhood friends and that’s his work ethic. A lot of his childhood friends had kids as teens. Prince was not about that. He would do anything to be successful and that sometimes meant stepping on toes. His childhood friends had a place to go for support (parents homes etc.) Prince didn’t. He was in survival mode. He was all he had so Prince definitely made the most of it but at a high cost. At the end , he was alone. That part breaks my heart.

You know your stuff. I read that when Andre confronted Prince- Prince replied “I’m the star”! So Andre was quitting the band but it was just before a tour. Andre was asked to stay for the tour + leave after. Since he was doing Prince a favour he asked for a slight raise but Prince said “No”. Andre got so upset he said “I’ll do the tour but if your so tight with your money I’ll do the tour for nothing”. And can you believe Prince never gave him a dime. Now you felt that Andre was trying to outdo Prince onstage. Andre looked a lot like Prince in those early days. On the studio song versions of “Why You Want To Treat Me So Bad” + the other official song videos I noticed Prince singing + dancing around Dez Dickerson, who played lead, but he rarely did the same with Andre. Therefore Andre was rarely seen close up or his full profile. I thought “Why Is Prince intentionally doing this”??? I figured that because Andre looked so much like him he would steal some of Prince’s attention. It was so upsetting for close childhood friends- Prince to find success + get richer + more famous but to treat a friend you knew so long. A friend whose mother took him in, when he had no where to go, fed + gave him a roof over his head, + treated him so well. It would have taken so very little to maybe to produce, mix, + release an album of his work, free of charge, to pay him back for all his family + him personally had done for him. Andre was very talented + just might have made it- found success. And when I listen to interviews with people associated with Prince Andre’s are the most entertaining. If he harbours deep hurt he covers it well hidden. He tells the best stories about their early days together. They had a concert in Minneapolis + Andre appeared + performed a few acoustic songs of Prince’s- he was excellent + it broke my heart!

In one interview, Andre spoke of Prince with what seemed like a “distant fondness.”He said in their later years they would see each other from time to time but not often. He recounted the time Prince asked him to come to Paisley and P played some songs for Andre from “Emancipation”. Andre said he remembered it so well because Mayte was pregnant and Prince seemed so happy at the time 😢. He also told a story where P invited him to his show in Ca I believe in 2014 and they played “Dance Electric” together. And you are right about Andre not listening to P’s music, cuz when Andre toured with NPG he commented how he was having to learn many of the songs for the first time. ☔️💜☔️

Here's the reason: Prince did all the work and didn't pay much. Prince was a shrewd businessman. He did the production and got all of the royalties. This is why Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis started producing outside of being in The Time. NO ONE WAS MAKING MONEY OTHER THAN PRINCE.

@dannyclay1967 5 жыл бұрын
@@arichmofo that's not the point. Warner Brothers went afoul with Prince because he didn't own his Masters. The situation with Andre Cymone had nothing to do with that. The issue with all of Prince personnel is that they were not getting any royalties. In essence, groups like The Time were just glorified Cover Bands. The actual recording was done by Prince as well as the Production itself. Prince owned everything about The Time under ©Controversy Music publishing. So Andre had no choice.

It's about conflict resolution. Both parties must understand the problem they have with each other and both parties must get their issue off their chest. I always wondered why Andre left so all of a sudden. I met Prince in San Francisco during the Dirty Mind tour. I was excited about having the opportunity to hang out with he and the band for an entire day. It shocked me when Andre was not there. They told me it was personal issues he had to reconcile. Now I know what they were nearly 40 years later. To bad. However, it worked out for both. Goes to show you how talented those two were to have the success they both had. I never felt their styles were that close with the exception of The Dance Electric. Much like Lewis and Jam, Andre went in an entirely different direction with his productions. Wow! Really good inside knowledge here! Thank you and keep up the good work!👍🏾

Shortly after Prince's death, I had read an online intererview about Andre' and how he and Prince met and started their first band. I believe that Andre' should have been given due credit and attention for the fact that it was him who discovered Prince before anybody else had ( forget Warner Brothers ) He paid much respect to his late friend despite that they parted their ways. Prince's death must have been quite devastating to even Andre'. I just believe that the two cats had too much talent and that Prince desired the spotlight more than he led on. He didn't just take credit and music composition credit from Andre' but literally stole the show away from Andre'. And I love Prince and the music he put out. But I also take notice of those who also contributed their time and effort such as Rosie Gaines and Dez Dickerson and others. By the way, at the 1:25 mark, I noted a young Jodie Watley with Andre' back in the day when she was with the band Shalamar.

its a character matter...prince was a hard worker....if Andre had/has the guts to perform and produce on his name....the path is open ...opportunities is the key...Prince found that single hole in a very demanding and hard way... which was a small opportunity to convince Warner Bros... that "he is not only good...but the best out there ...and could do it fast and bring money" and then maximise it working to it.... Prince did it ...Andre was a part of it... MJ had his father and jackson 5 could do it with a back up help concrning managers/producers - Motown...Prince was alone, Andre was alone....Prince went to wolves to tell them ...look what i can do and i can do better which is very hard as he was nobody...You can be Einstein or Da vinci but you must sell and during your first steps you are going to fail...till you find how to bring success and be a name of respect...

I think the part that bothers me. Andre's Mother/Father sheltered/fed/clothed/Loved Prince. It seems Prince's bio father didn't. Prince's bio father made quite a few kids and didn't do ANYTHING for them. By Andre's family Loving Prince...that took something away from Andre'. I don't know and don't pretend to know what took place or the dynamics. No doubt Prince had in rough in some respects...had it easy in many other respects. Prince didn't have to answer to anyone. The Anderson family wasn't his own, his father was indolent, his mother easily gave him away and cared for Omar and Tyka. Funny we don't here about Duane Joseph...?...Prince could do it his own way. It didn't hurt that Prince was damn cute ...light skin, glowing hazel eyes tiny in stature fragile looking. Couldn't help but feel sorry for him. But he knew how to use that to his advantage...On one hand...should've given more back to where he came from and to those who got him to where he is...on the other hand...would he have gotten to where he did if he didn't leave those who got him where he was behind....He got to the mountain-top and found he was alone..____life...---...___

Prince was always helping the Qualified Musicians and singers on his level. If in fact, Andre himself claimed that he was equal to Prince then he was clearly deluded in his mind. No one from that Minneapolis camp even seems to come close to Prince's level of Talent so.!!! Andre has talent but so does a lot of other musicians. Even some seasoned Studio musicians had something to learn from this Genius. Prince was nearly unmatched. Also Andre Left on his own accord, not due to Prince. Jealousy is not out of this equation in my opinion. Again they wanted the same thing and both had the opportunity for the same thing, Prince had bands Andre had bands, But Who do we still listen to. And The Dance Electric is the only song outside of Let's Work that we even think of Andre. And That was Prince. Sooooooo...........Um..........!

It is hard when there is two exceptional musicians. Side by side they actually made each other better by trying to out due each other. Competition makes a person better than they already are. Especially when you have the drive they both had. They were more like siblings. Siblings can do and say anything they want to each other. It's to bad they couldn't work it out. Another great video. Maybe if they all got signed as a band, things would have worked out. I think Andre could accept that. Instead, Prince got a contract and Andre was hired to back up Prince. This is not the career Andre envisioned for himself and it is said that the understanding was that Andre would leave later on and do his own thing.

Actually it was for Cymone's third album that Bernadette Anderson asked Prince to contribute. I think you may have forgotten that Prince neglected to give Cymone any print credit on his albums even though Cymone contributed. There's an interview where Prince says that there was a typo and Cymone's name was omitted (by accident?). I think this was the first album. If you listen to the track " Just As Long As We're Together" even though this was noted as being recorded exclusively by Prince, you can clearly hear Cymone's voice. Just as you can when Cymone sings the closing part of Uptown.

Andre Cymone and Prince,,were both on the same level of hardcore funk with an mix of nu wave and punk music, in my opinion going left field two like that can throwdown is hard to be in an band, knew about the shade between Prince and Andre, there was something said that Andre discovered The Time, that Prince took over the band, there was Alexander O Neal /who was the first lead singer for the Time, then something went down between Prince and Alexander; Morris Day became lead singer Andre was there when all this went down, along with the bass lines said stolen, Prince and Andre were like brothers and brothers always in time come back together have all the Andre cds and the Girls CD he produced in 1984, both had an different sound u can tell when Andre was throwing down the bass was heavy, also the nu wave and punk genre is mixed with hardcore funk the same thing happened to the Isleys Brothers the younger brothers wanted to go solo with hardcore funk mixed with heavy metal the older set wanted to do just mellow slow cuts then in 1984 it happened, Isley Jasper Isley was Ernie, Marvin, Chris/the older set was Isleys Brothers led by Ronald; later on there were various groups of Isleys they had come back together as brothers Marvin and O Kelly have passed R. I. P.,, the Music business is hard as hell to survive in I believe Andre Cymone always felt Prince as his brother and Prince did the same thing it is about time that Andre is getting props now for Andre is the other half creator of the MPLS sound We lost Prince,s but we shall have Andre that is so very close to Prince as both are brothers, like the vid the Dawn is here, welcome to the Dawn, ps there is an rumor that Rick James stolen Prince,s keyboard on that tour in 1980, in getting back at Rick James, Prince took Vanity from Rick James and produced Vanity 6

I think it was better for Andre to leave rather than continue to work as a back up musician for Prince because it was leading to rivalry and a further fraying of their friendship. Andre undoubtedly had bigger dreams and goals. Since he was not under the record contract, he had limited say in creative input and did not accrue many financial benefits. Prince was only obligated to pay him scale, and Andre was not entitled to royalties unless he got credit so Andre was not able to make the living he envisioned for himself working under Prince. So I think Andre knew it was better for him to strike out on his own. I think Andre did create part of the music for Do Me and maybe some other material and maybe he did not get the credit he deserved or would have gotten had he been an equal band member. I don't think Prince was even legally obligated to give him credit. Lawyers have warned hired musicians to be careful about playing anything that they are not instructed to play because any creative contribution they make may become the legal property of their employer. I think Andre was hurt by the fact that Prince got all the credit for Do Me, but I think Andre was planning to leave the group anyway as that was agreement from the beginning.

This is a good video although I do think several things aren’t mentioned that should be. The first being that, from the jump, Prince was always the star. When Prince was signed to WB as a solo artist and Andre agreed to join his band, I don’t think Andre realized that he was going to be playing second fiddle to Prince in those situations. But that’s exactly what happened. Prince was never signed as a band; Prince and Andre were never signed as a duo; PRINCE was signed. As for the music, Andre admitted that the two of them routinely borrowed from one another because they were close, so it sounds like it wasn’t one-sided. It’s funny tho that Andre won’t admit which songs contain aspects that he stole from Prince. In addition, musically, “Do Me, Baby” shares A LOT in common with an Eddie Hazel song, and Andre even admitted begrudgingly in another interview that Prince changed the lyrics, only keeping one or two lines from Andre’s original, which oddly enough we still have never heard lol. But I think the biggest reason Andre left was that he wanted a career of his own. I don’t agree that they were all equally talented. I definitely think Prince was the bigger talent and he had a bigger drive to succeed than the others. I remember stories from their shows where they talk about Prince walking around the stage, telling them all what he wanted them to play and any adjustments he wanted them to make. Plus, Prince was a far better songwriter. Moreover, look at how each of their solo “careers” developed compared to Prince’s and then ask yourself whether or not they’re equally talented lol

Good video. Two young guys starting out as equals eager to make it big in the music industry. Each one going for it. It must have hurt when Prince took the lead and maybe some envy/jealousy involved. I'd read an alleged quote (years ago closer to 82-83) that Andre stated " Dude was like on his 3rd house & here I am still living in my mom's basement!" I think Andre speaks about Prince now with more decorum after his passing.. but his true feelings were revealed back then not too long after his departure.. thx!

Andre said last year that just like Dez it was always his intention to "do his own thing". He said he was with Prince to get everything kicked-off, but he and Prince knew that he would leave to do his own thing at some point. I recently read an article on Vanity that said Andre took Vanity to a club in L.A. in an attempt to steal her away from Prince and that was the final straw for Prince. The article implied that Prince fired Andre, but everything I have ever heard said Andre quit so the article may have misquoted or drew the wrong conclusions.Andre made it seem like all was forgiven at some point, but they definitely would never work together even if Prince had lived.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Prince did swipe Andre’s bass line, considering how he treated, “The Time,” when they toured together!! Things like making them play as a backup band for, “Vanity 6,” but didn’t want the audience to see them play!! So he made them play behind a purple curtain!! He and some of his band members grabbed Jesse Johnson as they were about to go on stage and handcuffed him to a pipe backstage!!! And he’d drop them from the tour without warning, because they were starting to steal his thunder!! It wasn’t anything nice!! He even actually admitted that “The Time” was the only band that he was afraid of!! You can find the video in KZbin all about it. But, Prince was still the man!!! Quirky as hell!! I suppose Prince's determination was a little too strong and kept sweeping Andre to the side. it doesn't sound implausible. growing up so close they probably shared desires, one of which might have been freedom of artistic expression, which Andre was lacking a bit, while in Prince's shadow. it does make me sad to know that such strong beautiful relationships crumbled on the stairway to fame. on a side note, i do recall with much joy Andre's bass parts in many of those early songs. it had a very raw funk to it that was never the same without him.
