Some of those Norse women were fighters; however, I believe that some of them may have been buried with weapons because they earned political power, status & great respect through wise governance of their tribe. They may not have all been battlefield warriors per se. (Think of Queen Margaret of Anjou, consort to Henry VI of England, and of Queen Elizabeth I.) I am a retired soldier myself, and even now only a very few women are able, or want, to be infantrymen. I certainly know how to shoot and maintain my assigned weapons, and the basics of survival on the battlefield, but that is not how I served in our country’s Army for 30 years.
@jeniwatkins32975 жыл бұрын
@@Tina06019 Fair enough! Not all women can be fighters. Not all men can either!! But i have a feeling there were more than has been thought. Scandinavian women are a different breed. Tougher and built bigger than we think of women in the US and most of the world. I have Norse blood and am 6' having worked in construction for 30 years. Not many women can do that work and i saw more than a handful of men try and give up too. Stands to reason that goes for war also. My husband was in the US Army for 24 yrs and saw a few women that could, but also a few try and couldn't. He always treated them the same. Once the uniform goes all.... Everyone is green. Period!
@kumakena5 жыл бұрын
Tina But plenty of women from all over the world have a long history of fighting in wars. You have ladies from African tribes, Celts and Nords, Native American tribes, women from all over Asia... Just because you don’t know many women who served, does not mean they do not exist. I’ve never experienced many things, but dismissing them as fake or rare based on anecdotal evidence is illogical. Knowing the Celts, in a similar culture and timeline, had women who fought, I would be quicker to assume the women buried with the shields and swords fought than to assume otherwise.

I'm a dominican 23 year old woman and I can't help crying watching you narrate my history, mirabal sisters are such an iconic piece of our lives, I went once to their museum and it is such a peacefull place, Even after all the bad things trujillo did to their family, to my country, they are light, inspiration, and culture to many other women. Thank you for sharing this story with the rest of the world. I'm so glad that I found your channel.

Interesting video! My grandma lived in the DR during Trujillo’s reign and she would tell me stories of seeing roses on young girl’s doorstep in her village and never seeing them again
@theedmee5 жыл бұрын
coolgirl3890 My father is from Havana, and Trujillo is easily up there with Fidél re: atrocities committed against his own people. It was men who were never seen again, though, including my great uncles. Castro wanted more teenagers for the army, and dad was the right age. His family fled in 1965.

Girls would hide in closets, I’ve heard stories that women would hide inside of ovens to avoid seeing trujillo, cuz if he liked you you were basically dead. My Grandma was a part of the movimiento 14 de Junio (the one that took him down)

I haven’t been watching much KZbin lately but after today I had to come back and thank Caitlin. Before watching your channel today would have been a hard hard day and I don’t think I would have gotten any sort of closure. Today my grandma died and it was the first time I was really around someone in their last days. I even held her hand for awhile afterward and I know I never would of had the strength to do that had I never watched your videos. Yes it hurt and I did cry but it felt more natural like I had a better understanding. I know when I go to her funeral it won’t be as hard as the others I’ve been to because spending that time with her I got some closure. Thank you so much you really don’t know how much your helping people!

I only found your channel in the past month. Without making the macabre creepier, you deliver information that is knowledgeable and enjoyable. The funeral industry is not openly discussed in the Bible Belt of Oklahoma so learning about it from your videos is fascinating and I don’t feel guilty around my very Southern Baptist friends and family. Your historical videos are even better. You are obviously well prepared for your presentations and should get a golden mortician award for your acting ability. Keep making these great videos! Thanks!

@@Ceibhfhionn Hm, I heard Granuaile. Lots of different names!
@TallulahFoxxx3 жыл бұрын
@@sophiatalksmusic3588 There aren’t lots of different names 🤓 Grace O’Malley herself was called Gráinne (Grace) Mhaol (O’Malley), and when pronounced, it *sounds* like the name Gránuaile: Gránuaile is its own separate name that people called their children AFTER Grace O’Malley specifically. Does that make sense? ☺️🤓 The name Gránuaile is actually Grace O’Malley in one word: (Gráinne + Mhaol = Gránuaile), therefore those with the name Gránuaile are named after her specifically, but she - herself - didn’t have that name. Edit: an example to make it clearer - let’s say Mrs Jones loved Grace O’Malley, so she called her kid Gránuaile Jones (which means Graceomalley Jones). But the original Grace O’Malley herself wasn’t called Gránuaile, because that would have made her Graceomalley O’Malley. A bit long winded but I hope that explained it haha 😂🙌🏻💖

I do Irish Dance, and in our school's set of performance choreos, we have one called Granuaile's to sort of honor her and her fellow crewmates. It's a fun one to perform, and her story is so cool.
