The thing about "watching" Elvis you never had to concentrate on watching him because ELVIS was a natural at drawing you in. He connected with the audience and just maybe those Elvis eyes might connect with you one day! Then, Now and Forever, an Elvis fan!

Two words: YOUTH REVOLUTION. There was a youth revolution going on right before the civil rights movement spread around the US. Young people just wanted a new youth music that THEY could identify with, a new music genre they could relate to. Elvis tapped into both movements right as TV became a commodity.

Elvis was playing with the audience here because the original controversial (and better) performance was a few months earlier on the Milton Berle show. No-one had ever seen a singer move like that while singing and there were 400000 letters of complaint sent in! The Ed Sullivan show was the highest rated TV show at the time and he vowed never to have Elvis on but finally had to give in and even ended up calling Elvis a 'decent, fine boy'.

It’s crazy to think Elvis was only 21 yrs old in this performance and he was already the biggest star in the country with his fame starting to spread around the world. He was before my time, but after going down the Elvis rabbit hole the past couple years I am convinced he is peerless in his magnetism. You’re right that his dance movements like in this show were the reason he was often filmed from the waist up. if you recall, years later in his ‘68 Comeback Special, at one point he stands up to sing and his band mates joke: “You’re gonna get arrested, boy” and “here comes the judge.” Love your Elvis reactions, keep them coming!

Hard to believe this show was live TV 68 years ago. I never get tired of watching Elvis 💞 Elvis sang so many great songs. 1) Oh Danny Boy 2) The grass don't pay no mind - written by Neil Diamond. Love your reaction to Elvis 😁

I was a 12 year old 7th grader in Catholic School when this aired. We kids all loved Elvis, but adults back then thought he was too much. I had a few friends whose parents refused to allow them to watch, after seeing his Sept. 56 performances.

You have to watch the live Milton Beryl Show that’s where all the controversy started after the show Milton said he had never received so much hate mail he said he called Colonel Tom Parker Elvis’s manager & told him he had Star that Elvis was going to be big!!

If you think that studio audience of about 400 people is loud just multiply that by 20,000+ fans in a concert hall! I went with friends to his first movie, Love Me Tender....from the second he appeared on screen as a tiny figure in the background the screaming started by all of us in the packed theater. It didn't let up as long as he was on screen. I never heard a word of the script. It wasn't until after his death, when I bought a dvd of the movie, that I actually heard the dialogue!

There's also another version where he does some great moves, specially at the end. That particular version is why they decided to film him from the waist up. It's on the Steve Allen show.

I love watching these live versions of Elvis back in the early days. Hound Dog is a great song! It was first recorded by Big Mama Thornton in 1952. Elvis made it famous & performed it on the "Ed Sullivan" show in 1956. Many times you will see the backup quartet singers called "The Jordanaires" with him. They performed with Elvis in live appearances, on his recordings & in his films in the 50's-70's. Elvis' movements were considered scandalous to show on TV. Some shows only filmed him from the waist up.

There is another performance of this song ,that was the reason for the decision to only show him from the waist up afterwards. In that performance he is doing the movements at the end real slow, very funnit to watch. Please react to that .😊Always lovely to watch your reactions.❤️

I saw this at 12 years old and my parents thought he was to sexy for me to see. The next time he appeared they only showed him from the waist up. For the times he was pretty shocking. Many times when he was touring at first in small auditoriums girls would literally gang up and jump him ripping his clothes off. One time he was leaving a concert his father was with him and the girls came running and tore his shirt off. His father was so upset. He say "Elvis, the tore your shirt"! Elvis said, That's all right they put it there.". He loved his fans till the day he died. Thanks King. I hope you will do the short interview, " Elvis Presley post army interview" from Graceland 1960.

You are correct; the 1950's was a very conservative period of time in our history especially through the first few years that Elvis hit the national scene. This is really his only performance on the Ed Sullivan show in which his entire body is show. In his last appearance on Sullivan everyone agrees that he was only shown from the waist up but it's mostly true of his other performance too (3 appearances total.) The main was born to entertain, he was a natural. Thanks for your video reaction.

mechips Elvis was the one that started the degradation of the entertainment business with his obscenes body motions and gaudy outfits, watch what others wore during their public shows, men wore suit, well groomed clean shaven, and the women wore nice hair and nice dressy dresses and they were classy and polite, compare that to the trash and garbage you see on stage today and the language !!! Disgusting !! !

Hi there. You are correct that it was after Elvis' performance of Hound Dog that sparked the anger from some people to have Elvis removed from television, which ended up causing his future appearances to only be filmed from the waist up. However, it wasn't this one you just reacted to. It was his performance on The Milton Berle Show on June 5, 1956 which started it all. I will link the performance below. It would be great if you could react to it, so you can see the performance that started it all. I promise, you will not be disappointed. It's completely different to this one from The Ed Sullivan Show. When you think his performance is over, keep watching, because it's not over. 😂 Furthermore, it's a 14 minute video because it has another smaller performance at the end, you also get to see the very first Elvis impersonator, who is a small child and there is a comedy skit with Milton Berle and Elvis. The reason I have linked this performance is because the image has been cleaned up a little, but more importantly, it's the original live audio. There are other one's on KZbin which are clearer, but they have been dubbed over with the studio recording. You NEED to see the original performance because Elvis does something near the end of the performance which apparently his band didn't know he was going to do, but being the professionals they were, and knowing that Elvis could be unpredictable, they managed to fall in with him perfectly. Please, please react to the link below, and not another one on KZbin because this is the original audio. Thank you so much. Link kzbin.info/www/bejne/fqaWlqOOrtaBjZosi=28_SPXgKJELcAFIg
