To be fair, it wasn’t a list of greatest Canadians or Canadian moments, but the best heritage minute segments covering them. Since they tended to focus on stories we might not otherwise know about, the most famous like Terry Fox(well, WELL known in Canada during the 80’s and 90’s)weren’t as necessary. I believe they did make one in the newer batch about him though so they younger generations who didn’t live through his heyday will still know about him.

I have to admit I got a little choked-up watching. I'm happy we could share these moments of our history with you. Not only do those events make us who we are, the Heritage Minutes themselves are a historical part of us. There were several left out, Sitting Bull, invention of Penicillin, Valor Road, the Chines workers on the Western railroad was glossed-over but it's a big one. The Halifax Explosion always sticks with me most because that's home.

Just like the Narrator said, these played mostly during after school programming and during Saturday morning cartoons. Being a bit of a history buff, I'd often look up the whole story in the school library after seeing one. These were a great way to encourage young Canadians to learn their history. When you are watching a medical drama that involves some sort of neuro surgery, listen for them to ask for the "Pennfield" which is a surgical instrument named for Wilder Pennfield .

@@tiffaniterris2886 Yeah being from QC and knowing Cartier's history pretty well, that one was frustrating to watch for me. There was literally no basis or point for it except to send a "Europeans bad" message. The worst is, if they actually wanted to show bad things about Cartier, they could have shown him later kidnapping Donnacona and bringing him to France, but that would require them to also show Donnacona asking the king of France to colonize the continent and to be their allies so they can dominate the surrounding tribes, so I get why they didn't do it.

As Canadians, this is the importance of the Heritage Minutes during their time for young viewers, and why I would like for them to be continued on all formats for today's generations. Our history begins, and continues with the indigenous peoples at the origins; they ARE, indeed, here today. Indigenous culture is our living history and it should be embraced and told along with white, colonizer history, as well as the histories of others welcomed into our cultural mosaic. People came as colonizers from Europe; then brought others from other lands, yet denied them rights as human beings... but we can -- and will -- make reconciliation a reality, people. As a professor of mine once said at university, "if we [as Canadians] don't tell our own stories, regardless of how ugly... who will?"

The one in the intro is discussing the horrid conditions of the old King Pen (it closed a decade ago) in the 1930's, it was the oldest and most feared prison in all of canada, it housed some of most hated criminals in canadian history. One interesting fact about it is that despite its reputation as our most terrifying prison, no executions were ever carried out in its grounds as the responsibility for carrying out hangings was delegted too the provinces and territories, king pen was adminstered by the federal correction services. Think of it as our version of Sing Sing or San Quinton, but on a national level rather than state level.

The opening Heritage minute wasn't true in the end, Cartier met with the Huron, his first encounter with the Iroquois was shooting one, as a group attacked them. Canada, or Canadian, was first used by the natives as a name for the French pioneers, to distinguish them from other white men who came after. It may have an alternative meaning between Algonquin and Iroquois, or it meant these first white men who settled in this place are Canadians. Either way, it somehow ended up the name of the country.

Wolverine, dead pool, sabertooth and super man are some of the heros that originate from canada when it comes to dabertoth, Wolverine and deadpool all of them are mutants, with healing factors and bloodlist. My theory is that all of them are related to the Algonquian first nation legend of the Wendigo who is a marvel villain that battles the hulk. Has for african american charrcters you would be suprised. You have black panther but also nick vage, the best version of the green lantern stewart might not be the stongest but is the most interesting and does not go insane and my personal favorite the man who kills goad and satan hell spawn. For anybody wondering how winni the pooh is canadian it is a long, complicated and sad story. Winni the bear was purchased for C20$ in white river, Ontario, canada (making him an american black bear) by lieutenant Harry Colebourn on his way to england when joining the first world war. The lieutenant was a veteranarian in a cavelry regiment of the canadian army. The bear was actually the company mascot durring the war and the soldiers played with it and loved it very much usually feeding it their iwn rations. The company got news that they were going away on mission and by that time the bear was no longer a cub and they had no room for him. They gave him to the london zoo promissing they would come back for winni and bring him back to vanada after the war was over..... They all died after fighting in the first world war unyil the end, canadians did not jave leaves they were their till the war was over, after almost everybody on the company died and the war they forgot about the bear they left at the london zoo were the auther of winni the pooh would bring his son and eventually decided to make childrens book about his son and a bear. For those who do not know winni is short for winnipeg, manitoba named after Harry Colebourne's adopted town.
