Good timing - I just was diagnosed with bowel cancer and am having cancer surgery in 5 days - in a regional cancer centre partially made possible from donations inspired by Terry Fox. And I am going to make the same vow. If I survive this, I am going to prove myself worthy of the second chance by paying it forward. Thanks for this, you guys. ✌❤🇨🇦

I'm an old man today, and already in my mid-20's then, so I remember Terry's "Marathon of Hope" pretty clearly. Today, I can't watch his story without crying like a baby, as all of Canada did in 1980. Thank you Demouchets, for keeping his legacy alive in a place and time that would otherwise never have heard of him. Cancer WILL be beaten one day. For all the Terry's in the world that we don't know.

Terry was a friend in high school. I knew him and Doug (guy driving the van). I remember sadness when Terry had to interrupt his walk in Thunder Bay (half way across), and tears in May 1981 when he died at a local hospital. It wasn’t just another untimely death due to cancer. I’m convinced he would have lived longer but for his Marathon of Hope! He sacrificed his life for us all.

Thanks for doing this reaction! Terry is a National Hero in Canada. Steve Fonyo, another Canadian cancer amputee, would finish Terry's run in his honour. Steve passed in Feb 2022. Another Canadian hero that might interest you is Rick Hansen, "the Man in Motion". He wheeled across Canada and around the world to raise awareness and money for spinal cord research. The song "St. Elmo's Fire (Man in Motion)" by John Parr was sung in Rick's honour. Today the Terry Fox run is held in September in over 70 countries around the world! He was also honoured with his own Canadian Heritage minute.

10:15 - scientists started sending Terry Fox prosthetic legs to help him with his run, because he basically launched the research into prosthetics used under extreme circumstances. He helped to pioneer athletic artificial legs, because he was doing something nobody else had ever done. Shoe companies started sending him free shoes to replace the ones he was wearing down, because the companies could see what extreme use did to them. Some of this was obviously self-serving, but his marathon led to many discoveries that have helped amputees to this day.

Terry Fox said he wasn't the smartest, fastest, strongest etc. Terry is possibly the most famous Canadian in our history. He has statues, he is taught in schools and he is remembered for doing something so much bigger than himself. Not accidental fame where circumstance made him heroic. Not sponsored fame that media created. Just an honest desire to do something for a humanitarian reasons. Doing something that harms no one and would hopefully heal many. Not bad for a kid who was always told he wasn't as good as others.

To date the Terry Fox foundation has raised over 850 million dollars for cancer research and the annual runs have become a part of Canadian culture with schools across the nation participating and continuously raising more funds. He may have been taken far too early but his legacy will live on forever, a true hero and inspiration, the best of what humanity can become.

I'm a physio therapist, and I work with amps.... I don't think people realize how painful this would be. Modern prosthetics are made to run on but still cause blisters, sores and constant pain. The prosthetics in Terry Fox's day were so bad, It's amazing that he could walk on them let alone run a marathon every day. A marathon every day...

A true Canadian hero. He will live forever. “No one is finally dead until the ripples they cause in the world die away, until the clock wound up winds down, until the wine she made has finished its ferment, until the crop they planted is harvested. The span of someone’s life is only the core of their actual existence.”

If you contact the Terry Fox Foundation, schools in the US can also do Terry Fox runs. Funds raised stay in the state they are raised in, I believe. There are quite a lot of international Terry Fox Runs. I remember Terry so clearly. I am from Vancouver, Canada. Everyone in BC followed his run from the beginning. It took a while for the rest of the country. He was, and is incredibly inspirational. The epitome of a selfless hero. He is greatly missed.

Terry wore (out) a pair of Adidas sneakers during his run and 30 ish years later Adidas released a limited edition commemorative Terry Fox running shoe and donated all the proceeds to Terry's charity. I am a 72 year old Canadian woman. I cannot remember why but I was asked who was my favourite Canadian and I had to say Terry Fox. I remember the day I saw him. I was born and lived in Toronto. I was on an arch where he would pass under to get to City Hall. I remember the scene as if it were yesterday. The air was electric. This man ran a marathon every day....on one leg. I also rmember the day he stopped and the day he died. I still tear up because of his spirit. The night he died, enough money was raised that night so it was like every Canadian gave a dollar....it was that night. Every year. many municipalities have a Terry Fox Run. This video was for schools but there are many people who still run for Terry. Thank you for this video. (BTW, if you are looking for another Canadian, look up Rick Hansen. He travelled the world in a wheelchair!)

Thank you for the respect you have shown to one of our national heroes. That odd little hop-hop-skip style that Terry Fox created in order to be able to use his walking prosthetic to run has come to be known as "The FOX-TROT"! Yes, Terry had a sense of humour in addition to tremendous courage, determination and compassion for others that he was trying to help through fundraising for cancer research. 😊 "Terry Fox Marathon of Hope" runs are now held in countries around the world, including the U.S.A., the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan! All because this 18 year-old kid from Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada decided he wanted to prove himself worthy of life after his cancer diagnosis by helping to fund cancer research so others could live. What a Canadian hero! 🇨🇦❤🇨🇦

It hit the news when he hit Ontario ! Followed every news coverage and interviews after that, talked about him and spread the news about his run. He died on my 18th birthday. I'll be 59 yr old male Canadian August 21st of this year. I only lost one sorta family member to cancer (step mom). But I worked in a Hospital for 30 yrs, worst part was when I had to interact with kids who I knew were mostl ikely going to die. Dealing with adults didn't have an affect on me because they had lives. I had to move to another part of the hospital so I didn't have to deal with kids. Watching this video for like the 3rd time... I couldn't help it, I cried my eyes out. I have put many people into the fridge in the morgue. Luckily none of then were children. It was my job and I hardened myself to it. But if I had ever put a child into the fridge, I have no doubt my mind would have melted and I would have been useless for the rest of my life. I never had any kids and started asking my doctors to "Fix" me at 16 yrs of age.

No one, before or since, has raised more funds for any cause or purpose. Every year, on Terry Fox run for life DAY, tens of thousands still run for Cancer awareness and support. His image has appeared on stamps, currency, in the Canadian Passport, and for special items of hope. He only made it halfway through Canada but will always be a winner of great achievement.

Terry lives on today in the hearts and minds of every Canadian. His accomplishment was phenomenal but I suggest this is what it means to be Canadian. Dr. Banting, University of Toronto, co-invented insulin which saved millions upon millions of lives but he refused to patent the drug for personal gain. That's what it means to be a Canadian. Canada serves as the UN's peace keeping police force around the world to ensure fair elections and to safe guard citizens where it is deployed. That is what it means to be a Canadian. Canada welcomes from 400,000 to 500,000 immigrants every year. This is the most of any country world wide. That is what it means to be Canadian. Canada is prosperous because of the freedoms it provides its citizens and its citizens are prosperous because of this freedom. Happy Canada Day everyone!
