Love cerebral Star Trek that covers this issue in such Trek way that it remains Star Trek but yet incorporates a human issue

The Measure of a Man is one of the best TNG episodes! So interesting to hear the backstory of how it came about. They were very smart to hire Melinda.

7:22 - Well, they later filmed this scene of Data walking under water in "Insurrection".

I really enjoyed hearing from the writer on this popular episode. Her getting some inspiration from the U.S. segregation cases makes so much sense to me. Well done! I also love seeing Denise back❤️

And now colleges are re-implementing racial segregation. As a racist, I'm ok with this.

Maybe I missed it, but I didn't see them talk about Frakes' brilliant bit of acting in the scene where he's looking at a schematic of Data, and a smile appears on his face, only to morph into an expression of disgust with himself over realizing his winning would cost Data's life. It was a little scene with just him and no spoken lines that I thought was brilliantly done

22:00 Fun fact: Seth MacFarlane's "Ted 2" is also an homage to "Measure of a Man". VOY also did an interpretation in "Author, Author".

17:00 BTW that's why I was a little disappointed with the VOY episode, in which the Doctor character appears as multiple worker Holograms in a Starfleet (?) mine, all disposed doing literally the dirty work, as it suggested the lesson from this incident in Starfleets history was not learned.

("Measure of a Man" opening scene, Dr. Pulaski is talking to Data) Pulaski: "Data, how tall are you?" Data: "I am 180 centimeters, or 5 feet, 11 inches, tall." (Roll End Credits) Seriously, though, great review with a fantastic guest!

I wish I could ask Melinda about Voyager's choice that the EMH programme eventually became the slaves that Starfleet couldn't make Data into... that storyline has always sickened me-- if Starfleet is such a perfect utopia, why are they so desperate to have slaves?? First with Data, then with the holograms. Would really love to hear her thoughts on this. I really wish I could talk to her about this. Also I really have missed Denise, it's so much better when she's there!

Good on Melinda for calling out Picard season 1. Those "writers" had no idea what TNG was or is.

Can you get cast and producers on to talk about the making of the show as on overall….we all know there were so many issues behind the scenes. You have gene notes, Maurice abruptness to some, ira obviously joined and left in season 3 because of the circus. You have Michael’s calming influence in season 3 which really steadied the ship I think you deffo need to address all of this drama behind the scenes to help address what was put out on the screen and issues there were

I always thought that this was -- hidden in plain sight -- a paean of praise to the legal system. Think about it -- it opens with Riker pushing an idea he knows is factually wrong, so that the process can give him a win. (Bluffing in the poke game.) Then, Louvois does the "Data is a toaster" argument, even though she doesn't really buy in, to force Riker to participate in the process. Then, we see Riker making an argument against Data's personhood, which he doesn't believe, but which he has to do to get to the W. It looks like it's about Data's legal status, but in reality it's all about putting your own opinions aside and trusting the process itself, and that if it's a well-designed process, you'll get the best result. Turns out that the poker game teaser was PERFECT for the message of the episode, and not just to illustrate that the game is not the same as its rules. It's also about how the legal process works.

Haha well done Melinda. Well said about one of the many, many stupid points of the dumbed down show which is Picard. That’s the issue with modern trek. Just bang bang and no soul (well apart from when it tries to ram certain things down your throat!) Berman trek kept to its own rules and didn’t really dumb down like kurtzman and Goldsman do. Season one of Picard: what a mess. Erm what do we know about trek. Picard, seven, Borg, romulan, lots just throw all this in with no logical plot and then use bone trek language like synth Let’s not talk about the tentacle synth gods from another dimension 🤪🙈

OK. this is about the writer and her character development. ( of one of the best written TNG shows ever) Just what does Denise Crosby have to do with this? She wasn't even on the show at the time....
