I graduated from HS in 72. It was a great year for tractors. Farmers could still afford to actually own one. No computers or crazy electronics. My favorite was the 6030 Deere. Second place would be the Allis 200. Both were great. Low cost horsepower. Farmer friendly.

If you're talking low cost horsepower, according to this, the 7520 was the same power as the 6030 but $3000 cheaper. Who knew?

Boy that big IH 4WD looked like a beast. Sure miss the days of sitting up in the cab of our Turbo IH 1206, disking all day long, listening to college football on Saturday AM radio. Turning that soil over, watching the smoke roll out of the stack, those were the days!

For me, hands down #1 is the Ford 9600. Dad bought one in '74 or '75. Pulled a Ford (Pittsburgh) 5-16 model 142 plow & 20' model 230 disc. Grew up running that beast for more hours than I count. Loved that machine despite that the AC never worked for more than a month after the first year. Dad had it repaired at least 2 times; never lasted. My #2 would be a tie between Case 2470 (area farmer had 1; I always thought it was cool) and similar design IH 4166. Thanks for the memories, Jason. Keep 'em coming.

My uncle had 2 Ford 9600s (among other Fords) in his large produce operation. He bought them new and ran them well into the 1990s until he retired. I spent many hours running them, as well as our own A-C equipment when I was coming up.

Glad to see the IH 4166 on here, I put a lot of hours on one of those, started running it when I was 11, I couldn't push the clutch in on it, so dad would get me moving and jump off. That tractor was workhorse. Those were the days, lots of memories.

I assume the 4166 had crab steering. Did it steer the rear axles like the Case Traction King with a lever or was it integrated with the steering wheel?

Like the Ford tractors. In 1976 my father in law bought a 9600 just like the one in the video. I bought his used 8000 and started my own farming operation. Quit farming in 83 and sold 8000 in 84. Wish I still had the tractor.

Boy does this bring back some great memories! My Dad was an agricultural engineer and companies would hire him to test equipment prior to and till maybe a year after its introduction to the market. Our first tractor we used for this was the Ford 9600, I spent a whole lot of hours in that tractor helping my dad test a new High lift dump wagon he invented. Then he was hired by a large distributor to help with the introduction of the Kvernelands top leaf spring plow, I used the 9600 to pull a 7 bottom version of one of these plows for a whole lot of hours. That same distributor was taking on a line of Deep till equipment and they gave dad a Steiger 4 wd tractor for that I think it was a Bearcat II if memory serves me right? That was a very fun tractor to learn and it had tons of HP but you had to be careful demonstrating the deep till to farmers because that implement would stop even tract tractor in its tracks if you went to deep! Great memories and thanks for sharing the video!

I remember we had a 3020 and 4020 John Deere and was thinking about buying a 6030 until the guy selling it told my dad that it burned 8 gallons of diesel per hour! That halted my dad from buying it. We got a 1979 4040 later. Enjoy the channel. Keep the videos coming!
@noahater5785
@noahater5785 Жыл бұрын
It wouldn’t surprise me if that 6030 for sale at the time was in poor mechanical condition, hence the ridiculously high fuel consumption, 8 gallons PER HOUR is a lot of fuel being consumed!
@joeyheatherjosephprice1520
@joeyheatherjosephprice1520 Жыл бұрын
8 gallon per hour back then was alot but looking at it now compared to what it could do it was still pretty modest on acres covered per gallon of fuel. See what a 8245R or 8260R will put through them under 100% load. Its more like 25-30 gallon per hour if you're lucky and then you have to worry about the 50 to 100 different sensors that can stop you in your tracks. Also let's not forget about the $500 service call to get the dealer to send someone out if you're lucky enough for it to be under warranty.

The JD 6030 has to be the bast buy in 1972. And on the smaller end, the IH 666 was another good buy. but a good ol JD 2520, or 3020 with power shift handled better because of the great power steering that JD offered in those days. When I left farming in 1987, my big tractor was an 1974 IH 1566 with front wheel drive. It was a good reliable tractor but not a very comfortable tractor to drive. I never upgraded that tractor due to martial problems, and was forced to liquidate due to a divorce.

favorite ?? whew ..... grew up FORD , so 9600 tops list . as 12yr old tweenager , was like the KING of FORDs . next , 200 . solid simple work harder than its size wood seem to be able . 3rd ; 2255 . was like the TANK of the day 1855/1955 on planetaries and steroids . tuff , reliable IF one could learn to handle their cumbersome style . the front drive so tuff it could pull 3/4 of the load itself . saw one ; bald rears , new fronts ... went for YEARS .

Power to the ground. I love watching and operating these tractors that are two wheel drive with correct ballast and duels. New tractors just dont seem to have the steel and rely on front wheel assist. Just my opinion.

Let's see how tractors built today can stand the test of time. I definitely have my doubts. Don't think they can.

In this time period the tractors that most commonly used here in South Africa was Massey Ferguson, Ford, Fiat, Volvo, International, Landini. John Deere just about entered the market through one of the Co Op's.

Just for future reference the early Deutz d130 06 was that darker green with silver underneath for the paint. The video had a later model. Might have been made later than 76 because I have a D100 06 with a 78 engine and it is the latest model black stripe on the hood and hydraulic steering.

I also had a 100-06 and never have seen another one like it as well. It had hydrostatic power steering (no drag link arm). It was the light spring green hood and fenders and darker silver body

Hi. The first D series for 70's Deutz had a gray chassis with extra dark green . The later ones were like the one in the video Upgraded power steering and a few other things and different decals. Those tractors easily can do 20000 + hours without touching engine or gearbox. Bullet proof tractors.
