Having someone turn into a monster before being killed by the protagonist is usually done to make it less disturbing but it had the exact opposite effect here. Hearing her corrupted screams & seeing her corpse in such a corrupted form fitting to her own inability to remember the person she'd been prior to becoming a figurative monster just made the whole thing feel like even more of a senseless tragedy. That & you basically had to kill her twice.

ik this is a fairly old comment, but the battle with agent black honestly was the final/high point for me - it hit me in the emotions and made the rest of the game feel very somber (which I mean, it was). like... bird man, especially the upbeat music probably wasn't the best for the vibe, but the death of black and her struggle to still stop you past death kinda set a tone that turned the already pretty "shit is going apocalyptic" vibe to 100% until you faced the thing causing all the madness itself.

I think it's so fitting for this song to play both times before Robin technically kills. In a way it's more as if it's the theme of those that you wanted to save but knew you couldn't. That said, not enough people mention Royal when they think of this song.
@kyuubinaruto174 жыл бұрын
I think Royal is meant to be the last shadow creature right before you fight the star worm. On their hands and knees, can only slowly crawl, and is hardly a threat. It suits Royal's giving up at the end. I also think that first one with the sword is meant to be Robin's brother, since they fight with a sword and appear to be missing an arm. It fits with Robin's regrets, though the 2nd and 3rd ones don't seem to have any correlation.
@GarryDumblowski4 жыл бұрын
@@kyuubinaruto17 I think the last one is Agent Black, honestly, who just like Royal ends up helplessly crawling towards Robin in a feeble attempt to kill her. At the very end of the second fight against Black, the only attack she can use is her rocket launcher, so if she didn't have it she'd be even more helpless. Royal, however, seem to be the one right before Black. If you befriend him then he just sort of floats there, a shadow over the moon, but if you don't then he actually does attack similarly to how Royal does in the game. He has a Tri symbol over his head symbolizing his status as a Medium, and the background is the Broken Moon, representing his grave. Oddly enough, with all of these dark spirits taking out all of their anger on Robin within her mind, representing her companions throughout her journey, i'm curious why Black doesn't represent any form of violence. I couldn't even begin to guess what might cause that, honestly.
@kyuubinaruto174 жыл бұрын
@@GarryDumblowski If I had to guess I'd say it's because of her tragic character. For the longest time Black was just a villain to her. Then as you reached the rocket you find out more about her, like she's been dealing with severe migraines ever since she was "reborn." and come to the sad conclusion that the only peace you can give her is death. When you come to the final shadow you have to reaffirm that you did the only thing you could.
@webbylarge56194 жыл бұрын
@@kyuubinaruto17 The shadows are Robin's guilt, the first one is her brother Elro (the sword, the sunflowers everywhere, his broken faith (the reverse triangle), and his dead wife and daughter), the second is Mina (the chidren everywhere, symbole of Mina's faith), the third one is Royal (the moon where he died behind him), and the last one is Black/Madeline, crawling toward her like she used to keep going no matter what. You can see that with the first three you can win by elevating the sunflowers, but can't do that for Black. only put her off her misery. It's like what happened before: All along the way Robin influenced them (mostly Royal and Mina but also Elro to a point) to be better, whereas there's nothing you can do for Madeline. And depending of your dialogue choices during the game, if you make the "best" ones for each member of your party, then none of the shadows attack you ! Because Robin, this way, feels no guilt about them, she knows she did her very very best. (but, you can't have dialogue choices with Madeline). And hey if you do make all the "best" choices, Mina come to help you fight the bird at the end and it's awesome !
@kyuubinaruto174 жыл бұрын
@@webbylarge5619 After beating the game I read about that if you make the right dialogue options they won't attack you, but I thought it was glitched for me. My very first playthrough I wholeheartedly supported Mina, turning down Elro at every turn when he wanted to bail, and all of them still attacked me. Had to look up the dialogue options. Turns out it's not enough to just support Mina. You also have to blame Royal for something that went wrong, since she dislikes Royal. I didn't do that because I liked Royal and didn't think it was his fault, so that was my one screwup.

@@webbylarge5619 I never took anyone from Iconoclasts as a villain, honestly. It's all a matter of perspective. That's exactly where the title "Iconoclasts" comes from, Robin and the gang are going against the One Concern's "god" figure, taking apart their entire religion. While the Isi have their own gods. From the Concern's point of view, Robin and the gang are the evil ones, they believe in "saving humanity" and in the Starworm, and they see Robin trying to oppose to it, basically destroying their entire plans. And how Royal destroyed the Omega Controller, which essentially doomed humanity since it alerted "him". Black was essentially just a soldier following instructions, that's all she cares about at that point, she doesn't even remember who she is and just cares about completing her purpose. To me, there are no "heroes" or "villains" in Iconoclasts, but people with different beliefs and different goals from each other. They all had their dark moments and downs, but that's what makes them feel real, and not bland goody-two-shoes. Elro killed the only person Black let close to her, then Black got back at him, then Elro got back at Black, and it went on through the story. At the end everything just falling apart. And for what? For some random bird guy that was really just using ivory to fuel his spaceship, who everyone worshipped as a god.

I don't know if I'd call her evil... but sad and awful, yes. Technically she acts entirely within the law the whole game, and it adds this wonderful complex dimension to her. I really, really don't get this focus that the fandom has on Elro as the cause of everything bad. Like, Elro set off the immediate events of the plot by killing Grey but the world is still in the grip of an insane religious cult that controls the population and is destroying the planet. Had Elro done nothing, the rocket would have launched and Mother and a small handful of her faithful would survive whilst everyone else was left to die? How is that any better than what ends up happening? Elro was wrong about a lot of things but he wasn't wrong to want to fight the Concern.
@youngs.987810 ай бұрын
I agree, the death of Grey might have been a tragedy for Black and she turned completely heartless after his death, but I think Elro's heart was in the right place when he did that. Also, One Concern went to kill Elro's wife and daughter, are their lives not as worth as Grey's? If Black wanted revenge for Grey, going after all of Elro's family wasn't the right thing to do.

This is the climax of the game. The Starworm might be the final boss but given how that turns out to be an anticlimactic joke, Black's story is really the centre of the whole game. And it fits so well. You *think* that the important things in the plot will be Him, Mother, Royal, the Concern, the Isi, but really none of that ends up mattering in the end. All your efforts, all the conflicts and grudges and lies that have defined existence on this strange planet ever since humans first set foot there, none of it matters, not really. What matters is what people do for themselves and the people around them, not things which are 'bigger than them'. Black was protecting the rocket for so long that she forgot why she was even doing it. She had given up everything so long ago that she didn't even remember why it was so important. The rocket became proof of her own existence and agency more than anything. If the rocket was still here, that was proof that she'd done SOMETHING with her life. And it was taken away from her for the sake of something 'bigger than her' that turned out to be a complete lie. What a story

@@DamageMaximo excuse me there is no superiority in undertale. and i dont see any. its just a hobo falling into a hole in the mountain and walking around either killing or be friending them also the game has a terrible fandom so dont get me started.

Besides ,of course, Beethoven, this song reminds me of Epic Mountain soundtracks, like those ones about humanity and stuff. It is gold

I have a lot of critisims about Iconoclast's story in MANY regards but Fuck Agent black really shines amongst all the rough edges and awkward characters and plot beats. She's perfection in every scene she's in. If only the rest shined as brightly as her.

Black... Was a complicated character. She didn't deserve what she got, and if ROYAL COULD HAVE KEPT HIS STUPID MOUTH SHUT maybe we could have spared her... Rest easy, girl. There are no headaches where you are now.

I really hate the fact that Black wasn't the final boss I mean SERIOUSLY, the weight that this song hits while her twisted and tragic story reach it's climax is just perfect.

She was a great character but the real final boss more than Delivered
@lucabalsasalsa3 жыл бұрын
She would’ve made a good final boss but the bird was mandatory for the twist to sink in
@ir-dan85243 жыл бұрын
I personally didn't like the end boss... Felt like the game built up to such a good climatic fight with Black, and a tragedy on the moon to top it off. The worm and the bird had absolutely nothing to do with the stories being told, and I really didn't care for them when they showed up. I wish the arc with Him would've ended in such a way that Black was the final confrontation. Hell, I'd have taken an ending with Him destroying the planet instead of an OK boss and a mediocre twist.
@ningensan81983 жыл бұрын
@@ir-dan8524 tbh I think thats the point of the final boss. To be so bizzare that its downright tragic all the suffering that was caused because of this laughable bird like creature who wasn't even aware of anything. He made the story darker
@ir-dan85243 жыл бұрын
@@ningensan8198 I guess that's one way of interpreting it, but I found the boss to be more comedic than tragic.
