i love how different parts of this song's lyrics feel totally different in the context of different Archangel fights

Personally, my interpretation is that the music, with its otherworldly quality not present anywhere else in the soundtrack to my recollection, is the archangel, and the lyrics, beginning to end, are the heroes singing back their defiance. Hence why the vocal track only cuts in when you fuse, which both brings out your greatest power and expresses why you are strong enough to take on beings that think themselves gods.

A lot of people are suggesting the song is from the perspective of the Archangels, which is a good interpretation that I agree with, but I'd like to suggest another: by the end of the game most players will have tangled with a lot of archangels and come out on top. That doesn't stop each new Archangel from trying to spook you with some silly shenanigans and a big speech about how they're too powerful for you, but after a while you've heard it all before. Sooner or later, this stops being their theme and becomes yours - for all their pomp and bluster, in the end it's the same old story for you.

I always assumed the song was for the player until people suggested the archangel theory. I think the reason it's assumed it's the archangel is because the song is called "same old story", and since the song is played since the very first encounter, kinda make sense it could be th e archangel, since encounters with them never ended well for the humans prior. But yeah, your theory makes sense too.

I love how this song seems to be sung from the perspective of the Archangel, but because the lyrics only kick in when you fuse, it makes it seem like the Archangel is *panicking* at the very real possibility it'll finally meet its match here, and is desperately trying to crush your morale before you crush *it.* Still very early into the game but man, this game rules so far.

I played cassette beasts over a year ago. I had a lot of fun with it, but it mostly slipped my mind like a lot of completed games do. KZbin randomly recommended me this and i got hit with such a wave of nostalgia and "oh yea that game was awesome" that the only reason I'm listening to this for the fourth time instead of playing it right now is because i bought it for my friend so we can play together tomorrow. I genuinely don't know if there's ever been a song that hit me so hard i felt like I needed to replay a game the same day. It might be the same old story, but dang if it ain't a good one. Excellent work to the entire team.

I have to share this During my playthrough i was doing the mall questline (forgot the ally's name sorry) and obviously fought the Nowhere Monarch. I fused as soon as i could, and the fight was going fine (i cheesed by applying joker right before the angel attack) until he used his random debuff ability to petrify me Needless to say my fused beast died the next turn to his angel ability (and i was out of revives) During the next few turns i was struggling to keep my other cassettes alive, and fused with my last two monsters, right as the song went "heaaadstrong...." This was so freakin' epic, and that's when i realised this silly lil' game about a person and her irish pal going to kill Archangels just went in my top 5

Cassette Beasts vs TOTK, who do you think would win? Cassette Beasts, actually. I'm still fairly early on in the story (I'm at the 3rd Archangel right now) but CB is absolutely a contender for my personal GOTY. Dare I say that this is a game that I'll be 100%-ing. The music, the aesthetic and the story so far has kept me more entertained than Tears of the Kingdom and I'm a huge Zelda nerd. I love the detail of the song gaining lyrics during the Archangel fights once you fuse. You genuinely don't see that very often. It's extremely anime and I am LIVING for it.
