ICW Boat Trip - NY to Florida ep23 - Fort Pierce

July 2022: Travel day 23 on our New York to Florida intracoastal waterway boat trip on our 341 Meridian Sport Bridge. We’ve traveled over 1500 miles, much of it solo, but we’re finally being reunited with our Admiral Brigitt in Fort Pierce and looking forward to some down time sun and fun.
It’s been several weeks since Brigitt and I have been together. We started our journey in Upstate New York on the Hudson River, enjoyed July 4th weekend together with friends and parted ways for several weeks as I traveled south with the boat to our new home in Cape Coral Florida.
On this leg of the journey, I travel solo from Merritt island/ Cape Canaveral area to Fort Pierce We get to see some neat sights - Expensive homes, divers hunting for lobster during Floridas lobster mini season and our first experience with Manatee which is comical in itself.
We’re nearing the end of our journey but there is so much more to see in upcoming episodes as cross Lake Okeechobee to our final destination. Little did we know what was in store for us shortly after arriving in Southwest Florida and the appearance of Hurricane Ian, but that’s a story and video for another day.

future note from a localFt. pierce Regal 28 Express owner.... In Fort Pierce go to the City Marina just south of the high bridge. The fuel and pump outs are much cheeper. They have twice as many docks and 3 restaurants for dock and dine!!! Much better deal!!!

Did the trip from Schenectady to the Cape in 2001-2002. Can relate to much of your trip. I did it in 3 legs from Schenectady to Little Creek, Little Creek to Georgetown, and Georgetown to Cape Coral with no water in Lake O because of no water. Boatings fun, as you discovered.

Yeah manatee are in every body of water we've got. I've seen 'em from the St Mary's River to Key Largo. When you're swimming and a pod surfaces 10 feet from you it scares the holy crap out of you because that's the natural reaction to something *unidentified THAT LARGE!* When I was a kid fishing on the dock of The Bolles School in Jacksonville we hooked a 10 or 12 foot Bull Shark, so that's the first thing I think of when I see something that large.

Our advice is to stay on the boat ... we bought in Fort Pierce back in 2019 and found that there's way too much crime for us ... we should have moved to Vero or Port St Lucie

How tall is Happy Hours? What is the max height that can navigate all the portions of the ICW?

It is about 16’ air draft. I can lower it a bit if I remove the anchor light. I had no trouble on the ICW from NY to Cape Coral Florida. Any low bridges do open for us.

To answer the max height question, most of the ICW can be navigated with a sailboat. Except for the northern NY canals and towards the Great Lakes. There is a max height of 16 or so out that way.
