The 'Overseas' line in particular is, IMHO, the best example of holistic watch design I am aware of. The way the watch incorporates the VC logo on the dial and through the integrated bracelet in a way that is so subtle, at first I didn't really notice it and once I did it is all I can see. And they've managed to do it in a way that sort of makes that detail superfluous, because the design itself is so...spot on. An elegantly rugged watch in its normal iteration - much more so in this iteration.

This might be my favorite watch. Out of all the watches. Also, you mentioned the a 24 hour track for the GMT hand as a possible improvement, but looking at the design, I'm assuming that the GMT hand is actually on a 12 hour scale, with the orange AM/PM tied to it to read out whether it's day or night in the second timezone. If that's the case you don't need a separate 24 track, you can read the GMT the same as you read the normal hour hand, which would make it even faster to read.
@visionist7

Depends on whether the AM-PM indicator is for the GMT hand or the local time. What does the pusher on the second crown do?

This is just about the only 3rd generation Overseas I actually like. The granular grey dial and especially that rotor engraving are stunning! It’s a shame that it’s just a one off. I’m sure a limited production run of these would of sold like hot cakes! With the exception of this (and maybe the date only model with that glorious blue dial) I still prefer the large date, solid engraved back 2nd generation Overseas. Just a more distinctive and handsome design IMO. That 24 hour chapter ring you suggested would of made this watch perfect! Make it happen VC, as you’d have a hit on your hands 😁
@Rosay__
@Rosay__ 4 жыл бұрын
The lack of the 24-hour chapter ring is due to it being a Dual-Time rather than a GMT function. All hands are working on 12-hour time. The AM/PM indicator then applies to the "home-time" hand in orange. So basically, you have local time and then "home-time" running with its AM/PM indicator. It's incredibly easy-to-read and effective IMO.

Watching this now...do you think the Sun engraving on the rotor took inspiration from the photo at 0:59? Also I believe there were press pics/reviews (Hodinkee or SJX) where they had it on the titanium bracelet which looked great. When this was auctioned a few months ago I remember looking to see if the bracelet was included and I don’t think it was. Anyone know...or even better anyone know who purchased?

I can't wait Vacheron releasing that overseas. This watch is going to be fun. Patek shouldn't have taken the name king of complication, it should have been Vacheron with their most complicated watch in the current time. VC was also the first one who invented the complication after all. This reminds me of a watch, there is an arguably more prestigious brand named Ferdinand Berthoud(You can read into the history stuff and the current position later on). The watch FB 1.R-6.1 which won the 2018 Aguille Dor GPHG, is a very robust watch that can take some beating and stay accurate at extreme temperatures. The finishing was the finishing similar to that of Sinn made to reduce scratches and the casing is reinforced steel. However, it only has a 30m WR. Just imagine hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of watch that was made for beating, I don't know what FB was thinking when they made that watch. Btw, I think the Breguet 7727 was made to be able to some banging due to its 10hz frequency and movement philosophy if I remember correctly even though it is meant to be a dress watch. Breguet's philosophy is about the function over beauty.

Amazing watch, great video! Do you know if the movement is the same in the "everyday" Overseas? I'm in a fortunate and unique situation to obtain the beautiful VC Overseas Dual Time. I make my living as a nature photographer and find myself in very roughed environmental conditions almost on a daily occurrence. Is the VC Overseas Dual Time tough enough to handle this. Thank you

It looks like a robust and well-made watch, but honestly, I don't like the case, nor the bezel: maybe if it didn't have those pits, and the lugs were a bit smaller (but same shape), I'd be able to say that I like it For now, the ultimate "go anywhere, one-piece collection" watch for me would either be the 214270 Explorer I, or the No-Date Submariner (don't like the date function and the idea of having a cyclops which can be knocked hard enough to fall off the crystal). The one I could afford though as an alternative though, is the Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra 150 with the blue dial for a little bit of freshness and to satisfy my love of blue colors What do you think, though? (Also, as a response to your First Watch video: Have you decided which one you'll get?)
@davidoleary6631

This watch is amazing. However, make a simpler version also (no AM/PM indicator or date), keep the GMT hand, put it on a rubber pin & buckle strap, make the case 37mm and keep the price reasonable and VC will have a winning entry level watch to bring new customers to the brand. Oh, and make enough so that everyone can buy it. Simples!

@aromaticsnail 4 жыл бұрын
4:40 A 24-hour ring wouldn't make much sense. This has a Cal. 5110 DT and the additional hour hand is not a 24H, but a 12H. So you'd ready the second time zone using the hour indices.
@christhorne7565
@christhorne7565 4 жыл бұрын
You don’t need the 24hr chapter ring because the AM/PM indicator allows your to read the GMT hand in the normal 12 hour way and then reference to see if it’s morning or evening. Great watch though

It's a very nice watch to wear in the boardroom but even on a heavy-duty fabric strap... a climber's watch it is not. It simply lacks the most essential "complication" a high-altitude climber needs: an altimeter / barometer. As a climber and horology aficionado, my experience wandering the Alps and other mountain ranges around the world for the past 20 years is that the most popular climbing watch is still the venerable Sunnto Vector. Now discontinued and superseded by more technologically advanced timepieces incorporating HRM and GPS like the Suunto Ambit and other timepieces by Garmin, it can still be found on the wrist of hundreds of climbers and mountain guides around the world. Luxury "sports" watches like the VC Overseas, PP Nautilus and AP Royal Oak are works of art, but simply not built to withstand the rigors of such hostile environments. If I had to trust my skin to a luxury watch in an alpine environment, it would have to be something more robust and practical like a Rolex Explorer II. No sapphire case back, completely brushed bracelet/case/bezel and its GMT hand combined with the bezel markings makes the second time zone instantly clear. No need for your brain to process a second hand reading to understand if it's AM or PM, something considerably hard when fighting hypoxia at several thousand meters above sea level.

Even though it has the potential to be a completely stunning piece, it is not a bull's eye as far as i am concerned. The dial is kinda busy and i also think the hour and the minute hands are not as legible in comparison with other elements of the dial that overshadow them. I really love the color pallete though, the brushed case, the texture of the dial and the strap. All these really give a rugged and fucking manly character. I think with some changes (maybe reverse the color between the gmt hand and the basic hands or, even better, lose the am/pm complication and make the dial less busy to emphasise the basic function?) it would be a watch for the ages...

Beautiful piece. But these types of watches always strike me as a combination of romanticism and marketing. Hillary and Norgay HAD to use mechanical watches because, in1953, that's what there was. But just as modern soldiers most often use cheap digitals and modern divers use computers, modern climbers don't trend toward haute horology. My friend on a high angle recuse team wears a G-Shock, as do most of his colleagues, for good reason. While, no doubt, a incredibly crafted piece, this VC is going to get a beat down if used for climbing. I dunno... perhaps that's easier to accept if you're sponsored and/or don't have to shell out the $25K+ for it.

@@gmshadowtraders I don't know that I'd call the SKX haute horology. And while I agree that the robustess of a quartz movement would work well, I'd be worried about the Hardlex (mineral) crystal around rock.
