I really want to love this watch. It’s one I’ve asked for since 2019 but wish it focused more on looking to the Future and less at its Heritage. There are many things Tudor has done right with this piece. What are your thoughts around the New Ranger?

Awesome review 👏. Thanks so much. I went to my AD and saw the Ranger in person. I didn't get that I must have IT feeling like the fxd, bb pro, bb chrono. However it is growing on me. As I have completed my Tudor Trinity :-) aka my Tudor land, sea and air collection ( land = bb chrono panda / sea = mn21 / air = bb pro ). The Ranger will most likely be in the collection.
@KC-bv9kf2 жыл бұрын
The two issues that I have you also mentioned, the negative color and the negative space. I agree with going with white. And the addition of “Chronometer” would be suffice, lol. This appeared to be a product heavily influenced by surveys and focus group rather than a vision. The size, color, and even shape. It’s like that person that wears all the popular “in things” but losing a little bit of their true self. Another 5 years, the faux antiquing are at risk of becoming a cliché. Their design team should take a few lessons from the Zulu Time. Your redesign is much more contemporary, attractive, honest and hence timeless.

Personally I love the new Ranger and its understated design. To me the crisp white numerals in your redesign seem to conflict somehow with the retro font of the numerals. I just made a similar comment, but I prefer the way you articulated it. The white lume is too modern for the vintage cues of this watch. In person, I’m pretty sure the lume won’t read as overdone fauxtina. It’s pretty subtle and almost off-white.

Always been a fan of your channel and continue to be so. To your question. I like what this watch seems to indicate more than the watch itself. It seems to show that Tudor is aware of the market sentiment / community feedback and is reacting positively to it. The two examples of this to me are (1) the lack of snowflake hands, and (2) reduced dial text.

For days I’ve been trying to figure why I don’t like this Ranger. Suddenly, you mentioned the color of the lume and there it was. As I stare down at the 39mm Longines Conquest in black on my wrist, what I find striking is the brilliant silvery white against the inky black. It’s simply more pleasing, inviting and dynamic. I’m fine with the homage to the past, but that color lume is lack luster and, as you mentioned, unearned. Im sure the Ranger will do fine in the market as there are many fans, it’s just not for me. @anthonysmith29822 жыл бұрын
Hey @ID.Guy. This release has found me thinking more than any release for some time. I fear this will be a long comment, so first let me say thank-you. Whether the release had anything to do with you or not, you've been central to the collective hope of its re-issue. The specifics of the design is your bailiwick but suffice to say; you make very solid arguments resulting in an *extremely* solid re-design. Me? I'm stuck in disbelieve that we've seen the release of a new MN 'Sub' (well, Pelagos, but you know...), a Ranger re-issue *and* a Tudor 1655 'Explorer II' - all within 12 months! That's *everything* I wanted from the brand (I can take or leave the North Flag). I'm pinching myself! Gotta give credit to the Wilsdorf Foundation. They *really are* trying to address the inaccessibility and flipper conundrum. These are the closest things to an existential threat Rolex is likely to face in our lifetime! Nethertheless, I do believe they are motivated by more than self preservation, and I'm pretty cynical so I'm happy to feel this way. I did try to use provocative language when describing the recent releases though, because I strongly disagree with those of us who *deride* Tudor as a Rolex 'homage' brand. My current collection consists of vintage and mid level military/tool watches and homages/copies of the most desirable (and expensive) military and Rolex tool watches. So of course I'm happy that the brand is focusing on reissues and reinterpretations of the Tudor and Rolex back catalogue! But It's also merely an era appropriate and demand driven extension of Tudors traditional identity. We all like to celebrate Tudors return to form and we all recognise that Tudor had a sort of...golden age adjacent to Rolex's own golden age, yet some of us complain as Tudor follows the same formula that created the watches we've recognised as being great. I may be missing something, but I don't get it. But back to the topic at hand: this is a great, if imperfect release. Now let the gradual improvements begin. And for Gods sake, don't see 'Poor Man's Rolex' as a term of derision - consider it a source of pride. BTW : I'm almost convinced the *other* Tudor is a 2021 FXD. If not?, a two-tone Date-Day? 😊 Cheers mate, *great* upload. 🥃

Gotta give Tudor the credit it deserves. I definitely don't feel like it's a "rip off" of an Explorer (like I have been seeing - no idea where these people get this information) The Ranger is as original as it gets! Thanks as always Anthony, it was a great read! And your assumptions may just be right about the piece that I picked up ;)

Beautiful photography, editing and clear, calming narration, very, very well done. As someone with a 7 1/2 inch wrist I do not mind the 39mm size, but I do agree with you, (I understand they were looking to keep with the original design) the dial is a bit flat. I think it would have been a big improvement to at least offer a polished bezel and more raised numeral markers like the Explorer or North Flag as another, more modern option. I like it, but I am going to wait a bit and see if they offer, like they did with the BB58, some other iterations

We see this same situation with a lot brands, and not just watches, where obviously outdated models are left in the range, that need significant design updates. It's sort of surprising really, that it takes brands so long to bring these models up to where they should be. It's like the brands don't understand the foundation of their brand hierarchy, if they did, they'd sort out all the fundamental design language, heritage, and functionality - It's like they get distracted by making the same models over and over in different variations, while neglecting significant potential in other parts of their catalog.

I was discussing this with a friend that had they used the crystal, bezel and white, modern hour markers of the BB36, this would have been perfect (at least for me). Just to share my opinion after wearing new tudor Ranger on wrist - It does not wear large. In fact, i find the 39mm explorer larger due to its rather flat structure and straight lugs. The tudor has a good height to length ratio. Something about that makes its wear like a 38mm. If you are a sarb035 owner, you will be happy to hear the size is relatively similar.

The size is also a turn-off for me. Just way too much emphasis on the dial and it'll wear even bigger than other (larger) watches. I reckon it's almost guaranteed we'll see it in a smaller size (like 36mm one day - they discontinue the BB36 line and use the remaining cases) ;)
@conorwhitworth51822 жыл бұрын
Personally? The vintage 34mm is PERFECT. 34-36mm field watches are that size with good reason. Light, unobtrusive , unlikely to catch on clothing or equipment. Small crown also makes sense . The general feeding frenzy on a watch release. Let the dust settle and then we'll see.

The new Ranger seems awesome but I can’t justify picking this over the Explorer aside from I am sure this will be easier to get.
@Thomas_Burnett2 жыл бұрын
The Ranger should never have been discontinued but, the 70th anniversary of the British Greenland Expedition now seems like an obvious marketing window for a rerelease and explains the discontinuation. It also gave Tudor a chance to resize the Watch to the size of the now discontinued 39mm Rolex Explorer. I really like the new Ranger. The omission of Tudors favoured rivets on the bracelet are much nicer and the clasp with its T-link system is a much welcomed upgrade. The omission of the ‘smiley text’ on the dial is also much cleaner. I think that this watch is still a great modern hark back to the look of a 1016 that people have been wanting despite other brands (Smiths Everest, Lorier Falcon, etc) doing that look as well. It will enable people to buy into a watch more closely related to the 1016 at a decent price from a luxury manufacturer. It may not be a roaring success but, I feel that it is something different from the usual Black Bays that we see from Tudor and think that it deserves success for that reason alone (as well as it being a great watch). Another great video as always my friend. ✊

Thanks for your always thoughtful reviews. I especially appreciate these deep dives into timepieces from watch houses that try to establish some link with their past, touching on a little adventure and romance. And when they go so far as to take note of comments from their community resizing cases, improving bracelets, changing to a much improved adjustable mass balance and balance bridge, and simplified dial layout, it’s almost as if they’re asking to enter a kind of social contract with us. Something akin to asking us to buy into their historical interpretation of ranger as it was then, so it is now their historical successor carrying Tudor DNA, becoming greater than the sum of its parts. All in exchange for them showing and proving to us that they listen to what we say, and are willing to do something about it. I don’t know how well this Tudor does this but I would love to see this faced off with what I consider its natural adversary, the Seamaster Railmaster. Some might not see them as comparable but they are both fieldwatch types, time only, have great movements but showcase at very different price points. Please consider this request. Best regards.

I like it, I see it as another member of the BB58 collection, which is where Tudor’s creative focus seems to be nowadays. Probably the same case? It makes sense. It sits nicely between the hard-to-obtain and upscale Explorer 36, and the Sinn 556, which it surpasses by its sense of fun (the Sinn is so toolwatchy that it became boring like a wrench) and superior engineering (wonderful bracelet and clasp).
@alvinmick2182 жыл бұрын
Thank goodness! Finally a clean dial! Tudor is becoming more responsive to the watch community. A 36mm or dare I say it, a 34mm size coupled with perhaps a different colored lume would elevate this really good watch to a really great one! That bracelet looks awesome as well. Do you think Tudor will continue to build upon or modify this model or is this a one and done venture??
@ID-Guy2 жыл бұрын
The future could go both ways for the Ranger. They could just stick with this 39mm and if it does end up being a dud they won't advance the designs with smaller models (sadly) So it's hard to know brother... I'd love to see the Ranger succeed BUT it may only ever remain at 39mm :/
@johnnyguitar66972 жыл бұрын
Great video, as usual. Though as a former owner of an Explorer 39mm, I will have to disagree on your take that the thinner / brushed bezel will make the watch head look too large. My biggest beef with the Explorer 39mm, and the reason I eventually sold it, was the very wide / flat / shiny bezel that was flattening the watch and making it optically bigger than it was. Besides, the solid end link made the watch wear more like a 40.5mm watch than a true 39mm, which would not be the case with the Ranger's articulated first link. Also, I don't think the dial of the Ranger is going to look too wide, as the slanted / rounded edges of the crystal shrinks it visually. One area that concerns me though is the actual hue of the lume: I don't mind a cream / eggshell patina on such an obviously vintage inspired watch, but this might be too saturated. Obviously, all of the above need to be confirmed in person. I suspect I will either like it so much that I will buy it on the spot, or it might just underwhelm me a tad.

One of the best bezels that Rolex gave us was on the first gen of the 214270 and another domed variation on the 39mm OP. They had this "roundedness" that bent the light around the dial so nicely. And I'll agree, the flatness of the Gen.2 214270 bezel bugged me too... and that yellowy-green they went with... I don't know what happened in the final phases with this new Ranger. Thank you for sharing Johnny!
@johnnyguitar66972 жыл бұрын
@@ID-Guy The domed bezel of the OP 39 worked much better on that case than that of the 214270. It was far more compelling, adding relief and depth to the watch.

@@ID-Guy I've actually now tried the Ranger, and wouldn't consider it. The disproportion between the watch head and the bracelet is even more marked than the Explorer 39, thanks to the very open dial, and the green - yellow lume isn't pleasant at all to my eyes. A swing an a miss (again) from Tudor, after the unnecessarily thick BB Pro.

Add my vote that your iteration is so, SO much more striking! I often wonder how these watch companies get by without someone as astute as you clearly are. For comparison to the new release, I own the 41mm 79910 Heritage Ranger and I simply adore it (7.5” wrist). For me, the larger size is the perfect size for a field watch (if that is what it is actually used for, as I do). Yes, the 79910 wears large (think 43mm); but the polished edge and softer shape to the bezel shrink it visually. As you said, the dial is highly visible in all conditions and my watch takes a daily hammering in its stride. The ETA is easily, and cheaply, maintained and I love the way how it wears its “battle scars” proudly, making it even more adorable. I bought it highly discounted after being discontinued and it therefore does not bother me that it gets a fair amount of abuse. I switch straps frequently, depending on the weather, and that watch has so much character with its Tudor rose logo and smiley face! I will consider buying the 79950 in addition to my 79910 (or the Steinhart based on your design 😂) as this is my preferred style of watch; but I can foresee it being much more of a ‘desk fieldie’/formal watch rather than an actual tool watch. This is emphasized visually by the fact that it does not have drilled lugs. Thanks for another excellent video.

I really agree with your comment about the negative space on the dial. This was my biggest hang-up with the last generation. I've owned an Explorer 1016 for 20+ years and own the 39mm Explorer as well and I think those dials look great, but somehow the 41mm Ranger dial just didn't work. Unfortunately I see the same issue with this 39mm version.

Some really good thoughts IDGuy. I'll not pass judgment on this piece until I see one in the flesh but like you there are some aspects of this watch that I'd prefer changing. I'll not go off on a rant but my main suggestion to Tudor would have been to use the lume filled ceramic markers and numerals that look like little slices of cheese from the BB Pro on the dial just to give that tiny bit more depth. Given the asking price that may have been a little much but I'll certainly have a look at one at some point. I'm OK with the lack of text on the dial but would have appreciated the chronometer text below the Ranger text. I'm really nit picking here though so I guess the proof of the pudding will be the err.. seeing one at the AD.

Appreciate it as always Theo. Sitting back last night and looking at those final renders I thought "Oh, why didn't they go with this" The answer is right there, clean type (like the rest of the dial) - Even though the BBP is more "homage-y" I think they did a far better job with it compared to the Ranger even though the Ranger is like 75% there... frustrating...

BIG fan of the redesign! The red tip on the second hand kind of disappears against the black and leaves the rest of it looking a bit awkward. The yellow together with the white lume really changes the overall feel, and with that and a 37mm diameter, I’d be considering one of these. As it is.. probably not.
@ID-Guy2 жыл бұрын
My thoughts exactly about the red Michael. It looks virtually black in all light (except direct light) - a touch of yellow or white would make it so eye-catching (easy to track for counting the seconds) Ah... we can dream that we'd see this ;)

Love it!! My order's in. I like your render too but I wish a watch similar to the white dialled Tudors of the expedition had been reissued. It's amazing how many people will tell you the Explorer climbed Everest and if the Ranger has a tenth of the success it deserves in future years people will be linking it with BNGE 52/54. Rolex are unlikely to issue anything like the Everest OPs again but I thought Tudor might have been braver.

Great question Nick. If it was me I'd never see the two watches the "same" if that makes sense. As watch collectors or at least people that know about watches I think you miss a very important point. Someone buying their first Tudor will perhaps not know anything of their history so the Ranger is their first major purchase in watches. The specification is amazing, again they do not really care. It has a great bracelet, T-Fit extension. At £2420 this watch makes no sense at this price given the specification, it should be a third more! The Ranger is simply amazing and then there is the price! It is light compared to the pro, it feels like a sub, but you are right it wears a lot bigger than it actually is!
